In celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, we present "VOICES OF SIBUYAN." A community-produced documentary on local biodiversity conservation.

Synopsis:

One of the Philippines' most remote islands, Sibuyan has remained geographically isolated since its formation. The island has been dubbed the "Galapagos of Asia," attributed to its high rate of endemic species and rich biodiversity. The island's inhabitants, known as Sibuyanons, have deep cultural and social connections with the island's biodiversity as they depend on it for their day-to-day lives and survival. This documentary highlights the interdependent relationship Sibuyanons have with nature and sheds light on the critical roles they play in local biodiversity conservation. By integrating voices from various stakeholders and community sectors, we hope to amplify marginalized narratives and provide a platform for local members to communicate their knowledge, norms, practices, concerns, and goals in regards to their local biodiversity. May this film serve as a tool and inspiration for Sibuyanons to see themselves as active participants in the conservation and protection of the island they call home.

Stay tuned at One Islander Vision home page on May 22nd for the initial release of the documentary.

***FUNDRAISING TO SUPPORT THE BRIBRI INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY***
https://gf.me/u/zauw2g

The BriBri are one of many Indigenous communities in Costa Rica who are fighting to reclaim their land in an effort to conserve their way of life and create a stable future for their children. Violence between non-Indigenous and Indigenous communities has worsened due to inadequate government support, and many have lost their jobs. This situation has worsened with the realities of COVID-19.

While families continue to navigate the long and costly legal process to reclaim their Indigenous lands, they are asking for support from us to provide their children with school supplies and items beyond basic necessities. Additional funds will support a BriBri women-led initiative to create and sell reusable cloth sanitary pads. This project aims to reduce environmental impact and bring social change in the lives of those involved.

Here are three ways in which you can help:

Our rainforests are considered to be the lungs of the planet. Most of the world's biodiversity is found in this ecosystem. Acts as carbon sequester. It helps to regulate and stabilize the global climate. Home to half of the world's terrestrial wildlife and the most diverse plant life. Preserving our rainforest is perhaps the most effective natural solution in combating climate change.

I stand in solidarity with my fellow islanders of Romblon in the fight to protect Mt. Guiting- Guiting from encroachment and exploitation of biodiversity. Bayay Sibuyanon Protect Mt. Guiting-Guiting Rodne Rodiรฑo Galicha

It was recently discovered that a proposed national road construction within Mt. Guiting-Guiting Natural Park (which is btw a PROTECTED AREA) was included in the 2020 General Appropriations Act (GAA) of the Republic of the Philippines and National Expenditure Program (NEP). This multimillion-peso project is expected to cut through a significant portion of the park, which will not only increase the parkโ€™s ecological vulnerability but could also open up the said protected area to illegal activities from miners, loggers, and poachers.

Many questions arise as to how and why the project was included in the 2020 GAA and NEP. Furthermore, there aren't any known feasibility studies, environmental impact assessment, nor consultation with concerned agencies and stakeholders, yet clearing has already begun since 2018. This lack of transparency from the proponents' part raises concerns among community members.

If existing environmental laws are taken into consideration, then this is a clear violation of:

Republic Act 11038: "Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System Act of 2018"

Republic Act 9147: โ€œWildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.โ€

Under 2020 GAA Sec. 26

โ€œThe planning and construction of all infrastructure projects to be implemented within the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) are done in a way that eliminates and minimizes the risk of biodiversity loss while the specifications thereon are in accordance with those determined by DPWH, in coordination with DENR. Major infrastructure projects may only be taken in said areas if intended to enhance biodiversity.โ€

So, if anyone can justify or explain to me. How is this road going to enhance Sibuyan's biodiversity??? I might be missing something here.

Now, what are the significance of this natural park?
- It has been once dubbed the Galapagos of Asia due to its high level of endemism
- Almost every year new species is discovered.
- It has one of the few primary forests left in the Philippines (only 11.2% of primary forests are still intact in the country)
- A biodiversity hotspot with the rarest floras and faunas
- It has the cleanest inland body of water in the country
- It has some of the densest forests in the world
- It is the life supporting system of the island
- The list goes on.
