federal government, once again, jacked up the price of petroleum products on Thursday for the next fortnight, putting an additional pressure of nearly Rs15-18 per litre on the masses.

The Finance Division, in its notification, said that in view of the fluctuations in petroleum prices in the international market and exchange rate variation, the government has decided to partially apply a petroleum levy, and revise the existing prices of petroleum products “as agreed with the development partners.”

The new prices will be effective from July 1, 2022.

Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi has responded to the fine he was slapped with by the Motorway police for speeding during his drive to Karachi from Lahore.

Afridi paid Rs1,500 as a penalty for violating traffic rules and lauded the Motorway police for not favouring him because he is a sports celebrity.

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron lost his parliamentary majority on Sunday after major election gains by a newly formed left-wing alliance and the far right, in a stunning blow to his plans for major second term reform.
The result threw French politics into turmoil, raising the prospect of a paralysed legislature or messy coalitions, with Macron forced to reach out to new allies.
Macron’s Together coalition was on course to be the biggest party in the next National Assembly, but with 200-260 seats it will be short of the 289 seats needed for a majority, according to a range of projections by five French polling firms after the second round.
“Of course, it’s a first place that is disappointing,” government spokeswoman Olivia Gregoire told BFM television. “We’re lower than we would have hoped.”

Pakistan has crossed the finish line but has to wait another quarter of the year to secure an international certificate and get out of the ‘list of increased monitoring’ — the so-called grey list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
On Friday, the Paris-based global watchdog against financial crimes, particularly anti-money laundering and combating financing terror (AML/CFT) said it would soon be sending a technical team to Pakistan for an onsite visit to verify that the “implementation of Pakistan’s AML/CFT reforms has begun and is being sustained and that the necessary political commitment remains in place to sustain implementation and improvement in the future”. The verification would result in Pakistan’s formal ‘delisting’ from the grey list.

An accountability court in Lahore approved Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s request for permanent exemption from appearance in the Ramzan Sugar Mills case on Monday.
During the hearing today, PM Shehbaz and his son, Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz, both filed a request to skip court proceedings given their busy schedules.
The PM pleaded that he had ensured his appearance before the court whenever he was summoned because he believed it to be his “duty and responsibility”.

NEW DELHI: Enrolment under India’s new armed services recruitment plan will commence this month, top defence officials said on Sunday, despite protests against a scheme that will drastically cut tenure and offer fewer service benefits at the end of contract.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government on June 14 set out a policy called Agnipath, or “path of fire”, designed to bring more people into the military on four-year contracts to lower the average age of India’s 1.38 million-strong armed forces.
The scheme sparked violent protests in northern and eastern parts of the country, with thousands of young men attacking train coaches, burning tyres and clashing with officials, after which the government tweaked some of the rules.

Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday warned that if the establishment did not take the right decision then Pakistan would break into three parts.
In an interview with a private television channel, the former prime minister, who was ousted through a no-confidence motion earlier this year, said the current political situation was a problem for the country as well as the establishment.
"If the establishment doesn't make the right decisions then I can assure in writing that they and the army will be destroyed because what will become of the country if it goes bankrupt," he said.
"Pakistan is going towards a default. If that happens then which institution will be [worst] hit? The army. After it is hit, what concession will be taken from us? Denuclearisation."

Sri Lanka closed schools and halted all non-essential government services on Monday, beginning a two-week shutdown to conserve fast-depleting fuel reserves as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) opened talks with Colombo on a possible bailout.
The country of 22 million people is in the grip of its worst economic crisis after running out of dollars to finance even the most essential imports, including fuel.
On Monday schools were shut and state offices worked with skeleton staff as part of government plans to reduce commuting and save precious petrol and diesel. Hospitals and the main seaport in Colombo were still operating.
Hundreds of thousands of motorists remained in miles-long queues for petrol and diesel even though the energy ministry announced they will not have fresh stocks of fuel for at least three more days.
