A few months ago, "Songbird” was announced as the first film to be made in the wake of Los Angeles’ COVID-19 lockdown.

How did Blackpink become the biggest K-Pop girl band on the planet? 🌎
Caroline Suh's documentary, "Blackpink: Light Up the Sky," is an intimate look into the girl group that has taken over the world. While it tracks the group from their early years to being the first female Kpop group to perform at Coachella in 2019, it also gives us a glimpse of each individual member as opposed to the whole pre-designed package, sharing their stories against the backdrop of home videos and early competition footage.

of the Week: Alice Wu
Alice Wu did not begin as a filmmaker. She was 28, well into her software engineering career, when she knew she wanted to make movies.
Her first film “Saving Face" (2004), which was produced by Will Smith, was a spontaneous product of a night class in screenwriting she took at the University of Washington. Little did she know that her first film would ultimately influence a new generation of Asian-American actresses and directors (Fun fact: Awkwafina even had a poster of it in her room and described it as the first film that spoke to her as an Asian-American!)
15 years later, she released her only other film, The Half of It (which you can watch on ), which arrives in a much different environment for Asian-American writers and directors – one of the many changes “Saving Face” helped create. As an Asian q***r filmmaker in Hollywood, Wu is determined to bring more Asian faces to the big screen and offer a refreshing take on the American identity.

A trailblazer and a game-changer, Gina Prince-Bythewood is a film director and screenwriter best known for her deeply personal storytelling through her films "Love & Basketball," "Beyond the Lights" (a film in which all key crew members were women!), and her most recent blockbuster, "The Old Guard." 🙌
The latter made her the first Black woman to direct an action movie. A champion for diversity and inclusion, The Old Guard is known for its diverse cast and storytelling which, for Prince-Bythewood, aims to correct the record and change the future of filmmaking. 🎬
Shahidi's performance on Great-ish and Black-ish was so good, we can't wait to see her on this upcoming Disney live-action film 🧚✨

This will be the woman behind two highly anticipated movies – Candyman and Captain Marvel 2. 🌟
While her first feature film came out only 2 years ago, Nia DaCosta's films impressively "stimulate conversations about inclusion and diversity," which turn the heads of people like Get Out’s Jordan Peele, who hired her to direct Candyman, which he wrote and produced.
She believes that stories are important in "raising awareness and creating empathy," and that it is through films that we "learn about and communicate with one another, especially with people we don’t know.” Hell yeah. 🙌
