“Serotonin+ Oxytocin! Because studying science is something that can make you happy. It shouldn’t be intimidating and it can be for everyone because it is present in everything. And as you study it, it becomes more meaningful to you, so then you fall in love with it,” Sandy explained, excitement evident in her tone.

“Makes sense! So Serotonin + Oxytocin. But this sounds like a research paper or a presentation. Too formal,” Justine opined.

“Ah, how about we abbreviate it. Hmmm. Sero + Oxy? Puwede?” Sandy egged Justine.

“Puwede!” they exclaimed in unison.

How can data science and analytics be used to make meaningful social impact?

For our first Profile feature, we talked to data scientist/analyst Dominic "Doc" Ligot, who is the Chief Technology Officer and founder of social impact tech company, CirroLytix.

“I think that analytics is a grand equalizer of sorts. The same technology that these [big global] groups are using, we’re using them too. So no one stops you,” he said.

"Behind every film, series, piece of art, book, video game, and podcast is a creative’s time, skill, sweat, blood, tears, and soul. Even platforms that have grown to become more seamlessly integrated into our daily lives such as the news, messaging apps, consumer goods' packaging designs, and public service announcements make use of a large amount of creative thinking and labor. Consequently, it is important to shift our gaze from the outputs churned to the people that produce them."

This article takes a closer look at how some of the different creative fields are wading through the pandemic—featuring interviews with Caloy Sambrano (Managing Partner, Ogilvy Philippines), Carla Pulido Ocampo (Filmmaker and Co-founder, Habi Collective Media and Balay Habi Studio), Neil Raymundo aka Yung Bawal (artist, producer and Thunderdome Studios founder), Michael Williams (theater actor, director, and VP, Original Pilipino Performing Arts or OPPA), Riccardo Corsini (Creative Director, Modeka Art) and photographer Mark Nicdao.

A little over a year ago, face-to-face classes came to a chaotic halt. Little did we know then that this situation would stretch on until today.

This article gets the firsthand insights of a school teacher, a student, and a single parent - offering us a snapshot of how these sectors are coping with the education gaps exposed by the pandemic.

“There is no one solution to addressing the many divides in the Philippines’ educational system. While the Filipino value of bayanihan comes into play between student, parent, and teacher to provide quality education, structural change in the form of policy-making can effectively fill those gaps families and teachers have to navigate around.”

"Though physical galleries provided a more intimate and personal experience between us and the artists, this year’s pieces offered a new insight on where we are now and how it translates to art. They provided us a fresh perspective through the artists’ works, reflecting their individual experiences during most of their time in quarantine."

If there was still any doubt about how we, as individuals, have a direct relationship with our environment, we hope that this helps dispel it:

"Undoubtedly this crisis is not only a health issue but also a social and economic one – millions more, already considered as the most vulnerable in society, have been plunged into poverty and additional hardships.

However, one thing many people still fail to realize is that this pandemic is very much an environment and climate issue too. Simply put: the pandemic was caused by our abuse and misuse of the natural world, our failure to look after the health of the planet – and this will aggravate existing environmental problems and the climate crisis, which in the end will affect us humans even more."

The world is still in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the vaccine roll-out in many developing countries, that light at the end of the tunnel – though brighter – is still dim. "In a virtual session with journalists at the 2021 HIV Research for Prevention Conference (HIV4RP) held from Jan. 12-Feb. 4, scientists and medical experts gave a grounded, but optimistic, take into the future of vaccine development for HIV.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said that there is good measure to believe that an HIV vaccine can be developed within his lifetime.

'Soon, we are going to get COVID-19 in the rear view mirror, but we are going to stare HIV in the headlights in front of us,' he said, adding that the development of COVID-19 vaccines have signalled promising direction for research on vaccines against HIV."

As a tribute to the year that passed, Graphika also produced an e-book filled with submissions from artists, designers, photographers, and illustrators following the theme 'Stories In The New Normal.'

This year, each speaker provided much insight into a creative life under siege by the pandemic (and in many cases an anxiety-inducing political climate), speaking not just from their experiences as professionals, but as human beings."

"While not without fear and confusion, growing up in a household that addressed mental health issues created an environment where it was okay to seek help. It helped break the stigma that surrounded mental illness with false, unfair, and potentially harmful stereotypes."

An opinion piece about coping with mental health before and through a pandemic, and why we should regularly check on ourselves and the people around us—especially during these isolating times.

Due diligence on technology does not stop in knowing privacy settings or engaging in debates regarding privacy and security, but also in actively demanding that Atherton and Wall Street Billionaires moderate these platforms in a way that brings the best out of humanity, not its worst. 02/11/2020

The sickness hung overcast, like a gray cloud in the sky. It made time feel like a sludge of days and cast a disorienting hue over cities, mountains, seaside towns, even deep in  the woods.

The symptoms that were grounds for apprehension became stranger by the day: a succession of three coughs could mean positive (or a covert code), a laugh, signs of curiosity, defiance, and even kind words or singing. The mouth suddenly seemed to be a receptacle of contagion and terror.

The pronounced symptoms were weirder deeper in the woods. Eventually, the people in the rural towns would only know of where the symptoms were found, as the government's armed enforcement sector would put an indelible red sticker on the households of those marked infected. The confinements probably happened in the dark shroud of night, because the red stickers would appear in the morning as the neighbors disappeared. But it was hard to tell because the streets were fairly quiet.

The scenario looked a little bit like The Passover, but in reverse.

Somewhere, a child with clear eyes and marked immune, heard through the silence. She heard the muffled cries, the internal suffering and resistance, and how things were actually kept under control. But there was no proof, as her parents didn't seem to hear any of it, or perhaps deafened by fear. But she had accounts of it all. One day, she would find a way to capture proof. And she would find others, somewhere, who could hear them too.

What makes up a cityscape? Steel frames, concrete structures, an assortment of vehicles, the daily bustle... take a closer look and a whole different landscape unfolds. Letters and images pop out of surfaces, peer through cracks, and for a time, one word pops out amidst it all: NUNO.

29/10/2020

There are stories written all over the city. Art is one of the streets' most prolific authors. His letters, written on steel and concrete surfaces, brave the elements and bear witness to the passing of time.

My phone buzzes. "What We Know About the Virus" says an update from a Youtube channel I subscribed to a few weeks back. I've been having these weird headaches lately. "It might be a symptom?" I thought.

Six minutes into the video, another update—this time from Instagram.

It was from a friend—a meme poking fun at a local politician. I replied with a ‘rolling on the floor laughing’ emoji, followed by another meme.
Half an hour later i find myself in a rabbit hole: scrolling from one meme page to another, switching from app to app.

One minute I'm laughing at Snapchat pranks and Tiktok videos; the next, terrified as clips of social unrest and overcrowded hospitals fill my Facebook feed. I've sent out quite a few messages and links in between; new findings about the virus to friends and family threads, warning them to be wary of fake information spreading online. This erratic behavior ensued for hours, as i jump from meme to news page, entertainment news to documentaries, emails and messaging apps, back and forth.

After a few more failed attempts i threw my phone down and sighed, cursing in the dark as i lay in bed. I figured our internet connection is down again. It's been fu**in up lately, didn't even bother checking the router.

A million thoughts run through my mind. After hours of screen time, a residual of colors and afterimages form on the ceiling, much like a textbook example of a psychedelic trip. Every so often, the distant sound of sirens blow past, disrupting my old electric fans loud but steady hum.
“Eerie”, I thought to myself, as I pondered on the frequency of the passing sirens. I counted 9 this past hour, and each time sounds and feels like they’re getting closer and closer.
Anxiety creeps in at the realization that every siren indicates some kind of trouble is not too far away.

After much confusion, at least one thing was clear: People had to shelter in place. This was on top of the preexisting fact that a lot of people didn’t have proper shelter to spend an indefinite amount of time in. Some were left to take refuge inward.

Not to say that the luckier ones didn’t experience a major shift. Some had similar recurring dreams. Some fell into a general stupor. Others adapted seamlessly into the new status quo, finding the lack of tactility comfortable.

It looked like things would be that way for a while: everyone looking out to the world through black screens.
