It’s your past self that’s always breathing down your neck and constantly trying to talk you out of being the hero you’re actively becoming. Don’t let that punk win. You may fall, stumble and regress into old habits but listen to me, fall down 7 times & get back up. It’s a constant battle! Get up and go after it! 🔥💫

This topic was something we all found important because representation of different cultures and people on global stages such as Hollywood is important in the formation of the hero identity, the perception of self, of an individual and group of individuals. Especially our kids. Misrepresentation leads to societal imbalance and serves as a means to maintain social inequality. It is movies like Black panther and conversations such as these that break the chain of stereotyped portrayals. In this episode you’ll learn and hear us talk about:

- A body of research called symbolic annihilation
- What about the movie captivated him
- The character that he identified with the most
- How the movie is building bridges in the black community across the world
- How a dream to visit the motherland has turned into a priority
- EJ talks about the Joys of fatherhood
- The importance of representation
- Why you should know about the body of research and term known as Symbolic annihilation and how it further highlights the importance of representation in media
- Why he doesn’t feel whole
- Talks a bit about his Ethiopian roots
- Why as an African American he fear’s being judged by Africans when visits Africa
- Proper representation of African culture gives us a sense of pride
- How he would’ve reacted if he was in Killmonger’s shoes
- Why he thinks representation is a big thing
- The belief, aspiration and admiration that Black panther inspired not only in people of colour but in other races as well.
- The nod vs the Wakanda salute
- Wakanda salute was important enough and well received by the black community and the world that they added into the FIFA video game.
- Why always shinning a light on the bad is bad
- Why its difficult for black communities to come together

"I always said I wanted to be Ayrton Senna or Superman. Superman was my favourite being in the world because he had such good morals, saving people and strength and all the things humans wish we could have.
"But what I do remember was there was no action hero the same colour as me.
"In a lot of scenarios around the world, there is under-representation. Young kids sometimes - if you can't see it,

While we may watch superhero movies as a form of escapism, it's important to note the moral and societal impact of these stories. Movies don't just serve as entertainment but they double as powerful ways to educate and bring attention to the parallels that exist in real-life. In this episode, we discuss the Marvel blockbuster, Black Panther, and its influence & significance to the global black community.

In this episode you'll learn:
-When and why my guest and friend, Jean-Si decided to trace his African roots
- What he thought about the movie black panther
- How Jean-Si grew up being of two worlds
- What the movie meant from an African-American perspective
- Why representation in Hollywood matters to minorities
- If one massive blockbuster can do to reverse misrepresentation?
- The country he’s going to visit first in Africa
- A civil war put a wrench in his family’s plan to visit
- What he’s expecting to experience
- Why one-sided narratives are bad and ultimately detrimental.
- His thoughts on non-Black people doing the Wakanda salute.
- The positive impact the movie made
- How to respond if a kid asks if Wakanda is real.

Phoebe is Tiger ferocity personified and Imposes her will on the status quo.
A girl who is nothing but sheer ferocity. She's a motivator, political commentator, and public speaker.
She talks about the loss of her mother, blogging therapy, crying as a form of catharsis, and how the passing of her mother affected her relationship with God.

The black mamba stand.

15/11/2020

Ora!

What fascinates me about Jojo’s bizzare’s adventure the most is the concept of a stand. A stand, スタンド in Japanese, is defined as the manifestation of the mind/psyche. Stands represent the manifestation of an individual's innate "fighting spirit”. The personification of life energy and an expression of the mind which requires large mental strength.

In the Anime, a stand comes forth when a user is in an adverse situation. Be it danger, trouble or challenges. So just like a stand user, create an alter ego if you have to, to help you navigate challenges and adversity in life. The strength of your stand is derived from you unrelenting grit and nerves of steel!

Kobe Bryant was on to something when he called himself the mamba. There’s an interview where Kobe explained why he created his alter ego, his “stand”, the black mamba. Check out the Kobe clip in the following post.

Only other stand users can see stands. Drop a comment if you’re a fellow stand user.

My trauma led to my biggest psychological wake. Now all I’m trying to do is to translate what I love about the superhero genre and my trauma into something that’s powerful and gripping to people.
I want to keep it real and relevant to you. I want you to go out and try because I know how much power it can give you. So I believe you’ll find this incredibly powerful because, I mean, who knows the power of the human mind right?
I’m your host Tino Mutapati and welcome to the SOS podcast.
