Gue Village , A mummy village

Gue Village is a small, mystical hamlet in Spiti Valley, located just a few kilometers from Tabo. Known for its scenic beauty, Gue also holds a fascinating secret – it’s home to India’s only naturally preserved mummy!

The story of this mummy is captivating. It’s the body of a Tibetan monk who went into meditation nearly 500 years ago and remains perfectly preserved without any chemicals or scientific techniques. The mummy is displayed in a glass case in a small temple in Gue, drawing visitors from far and wide to witness this ancient marvel.

Our visit to Gue became even more memorable when we spent a cold night in a newly opened restaurant run by a young, warm-hearted couple. They welcomed us with incredible hospitality, and their playful 4-year-old son kept us entertained by imitating everything we said. During the evening, the young woman shared a glimpse into their traditional way of life. She proudly mentioned that they use a water-powered flour mill to grind their grains, which they then use to prepare their meals. Their family regularly harvests apples and a few hardy vegetables, and they have a unique method for storing food to withstand Spiti’s extreme winters.

As special guests, we were treated to their traditional alu dhokli, a dish they reserve for such occasions, and wrapped up the evening with a warm, soothing wild berry herbal tea – the perfect way to end a chilly night in the mountains.

The village itself is peaceful and charming, surrounded by the stark Spiti hills and green fields, giving it a mystical aura. The people here, primarily of Tibetan descent, live humbly with a deep-rooted faith in Buddhism. Visiting Gue feels like stepping into another world, offering a serene and disconnected experience that’s humbling and unforgettable.

Chicham villageChicham Village, nestled in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, is one of the highest villages in Asia, located at around 4,000 meters above sea level. This remote village offers a unique glimpse into the lives of its hardy inhabitants and their distinctive culture. The houses in Chicham are traditionally built using stones and mud, with flat roofs designed to hold snow in winter, providing insulation against the biting cold. The architecture reflects a blend of Tibetan and traditional Spitian styles, often decorated with bright prayer flags and intricate wood carvings on windows and doorways. Houses are clustered close together to create warmth and foster a tight-knit community, a necessity in such a harsh environment. The people of Chicham are primarily of Tibetan descent and practice Tibetan Buddhism, with a deep connection to the land and traditions passed down through generations. Festivals are celebrated with a colorful mix of dance, prayer, and ritual, emphasizing the villagers’ spiritual connection to nature and their Buddhist faith. Monks and lamas are respected figures, and prayer flags and mani stones (engraved stones with mantras) are common sights.Chicham is also known for its thrilling suspension bridge, one of the highest in Asia, which connects it to the neighboring Kibber village across a dramatic gorge. Despite its isolation, Chicham’s residents are warm and welcoming to travelers, sharing stories of their culture, resilience, and the serene yet challenging life they lead in one of India’s most remote and beautiful corners.

Diary Entry: Overlanding from Koksar to Losar via Kunzum Pass

Today’s overlanding journey from Koksar to Losar via Kunzum Pass was nothing short of surreal. This region, nestled in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, is a high-altitude desert where barren mountains and rocky cliffs meet vast open skies. Kunzum Pass itself, at 4,551 meters (14,931 feet), is one of the highest motorable passes in India, linking the green Lahaul Valley to the dramatic, rugged landscapes of Spiti.

As we climbed, the terrain shifted from lush patches of green in Koksar to the stark beauty of rocks and dust that defines Spiti. Steep drops and winding paths cling to the mountainsides, and every glance down reminded us of just how fragile our path was. There’s an instinctive fear of heights that kicks in as you look down those sheer cliffs, but the beauty is overwhelming.

The photos from today capture a different story—they show towering peaks, endless valleys, and the magnificence of the mountains, but not the nerves we felt navigating those narrow roads. The peaks surrounding Kunzum Pass seem like silent guardians, towering over the valley with snow-capped majesty. Far below, the Spiti River carves through the landscape, adding a hint of life to the otherwise barren scenery.

Reaching Losar, a peaceful village in Spiti, felt like a reward after the intense journey—a quiet haven surrounded by this rugged, awe-inspiring beauty.

Is there any need to provide a description for these photos?
Still, I don’t want to keep secrets from you! Let me spill the beans. This gem, Maneknath Gufa and Temple, is nestled in the Danta Taluka of Banaskantha district, Gujarat. Picture this: lush green forests, mountains of massive boulders, and a peaceful ambiance that nature lovers dream of.

Sure, it’s a religious spot (most temples in India are surrounded by nature), but it’s also a hotspot for trekking enthusiasts. And hey, camping lovers, if solo camping is your thing and you’re brave enough to stay in the wild after 5 pm (because even the priest leaves by then), you HAVE to try this place. We did, and it was epic!

So, pack your bags, channel your inner adventurer, and don’t forget to follow us for more hidden gems like this!

In the heart of Kutch, Gujarat, Rabari men drape themselves in the timeless elegance of pure white cotton attire, a seemingly impractical choice amidst the desert’s dusty expanse, yet remarkably pragmatic under the relentless sun. Their ensemble comprises a long-sleeved double-breasted shirt, varying in length, accompanied by a loincloth known as the “pacheri,” and an impressive eight-meter-long red turban. The shirts and loincloths often showcase meticulous embroidery, depicting a tapestry of floral and animal motifs, especially in the wardrobe of the younger generation.

As age graces them with wisdom, Rabari elders transition from vibrant red turbans to the serenity of white, a symbolic shift mirrored by the snow-white hues adorning their beards. The turban, a multifaceted accessory, shields them from the desert’s scorching heat while doubling as a makeshift pillow when repose beckons.

Intricate yet understated, Rabari men accessorize with subtle gold earrings and protective amulets draped around their necks, serving as talismans against the malevolent gaze. Their attire, a fusion of practicality and cultural resonance, weaves a narrative that transcends mere fashion, offering a glimpse into the harmonious coexistence of tradition and survival in the arid landscapes of Kutch

Amidst the Aravalli Range's embrace, our camping escapade at Mount Abu unfolded like a tranquil chapter in a travel novel. Nestled in a serene location, our campsite offered a peaceful refuge, a haven away from the bustle.

As the sun dipped behind the hills, casting a warm glow on our surroundings, we found ourselves in the company of rare birders, fellow seekers of solitude. The absence of crowds allowed the symphony of nature to take center stage, with the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant call of an exotic bird.

Our journey led us to a temple perched on a hill, a spiritual ascent that mirrored the physical climb. At the summit, we discovered a sanctuary of peace, where time seemed to stand still. Watching the vibrant hues of the sunset paint the sky, we celebrated the beauty of solitude, a communion with nature and the divine.

In the stillness of the night, with only the crackling of the campfire breaking the silence, Mount Abu whispered tales of tranquility, etching memories of a camping adventure bathed in the soft glow of moonlight.

When I saw these faces outside almost all the houses in Bangalore, I was intrigued. The practice of placing a demon head or face on the front part of houses in Bangalore, and in other parts of India, is often associated with warding off evil spirits and protecting the home and its occupants. These faces are often referred to as “Dwarapalakas” or “Yali,” and they are believed to act as guardians of the entrance.

The concept is rooted in Indian mythology and culture, where various deities and mythological creatures are considered protectors of homes and entrances. Placing these faces at the front of the house is believed to deter negative energies, evil spirits, and bring good fortune to the residents. It’s a traditional and superstitious practice that has been passed down through generations.

In some cases, these faces can also be purely decorative, serving an aesthetic purpose while still referencing the cultural and mythological significance. The specific reasons and the choice of design may vary from one household to another, but it’s generally linked to local traditions and beliefs.

Bangalore, also known as the Silicon Valley of India, is not only a thriving IT hub but also a city that boasts a rich architectural heritage. The city is a perfect blend of modernity and tradition, with its architectural gems showcasing a diverse range of styles and influences.

One of the most iconic architectural landmarks in Bangalore is the Vidhana Soudha, the seat of the state legislature of Karnataka. This magnificent building is a fine example of neo-Dravidian architecture, with its grandiose facade, intricate carvings, and stunning domes. It stands as a symbol of power and governance in the city.

Another architectural gem is the Bangalore Palace, which is reminiscent of the Tudor-style architecture found in England. Built in the late 19th century, this palace showcases exquisite woodwork, beautiful stained glass windows, and Victorian-era furniture. The sprawling palace grounds are a popular tourist attraction and host various cultural events throughout the year.

The Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace is another remarkable architectural marvel in Bangalore. This Indo-Islamic structure reflects the elegant craftsmanship of the 18th century. The palace is adorned with intricate floral motifs, ornate arches, and stunning frescoes. It provides a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the erstwhile ruler, Tipu Sultan.

The city is also home to numerous temples that exhibit unique architectural styles. The Bull Temple, dedicated to Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva, is a prime example of Dravidian architecture. The temple houses a massive monolithic statue of Nandi, carved out of a single granite rock.

Additionally, Bangalore's modern architectural landscape is equally impressive. The city is dotted with skyscrapers, IT parks, and futuristic structures that showcase contemporary design and engineering excellence. The iconic UB City, with its sleek glass facades and luxurious retail spaces, is a testament to Bangalore's modern architectural prowess.

In conclusion, Bangalore is a city that offers a delightful blend of architectural gems. From the grand Vidhana Soudha to the historic Bangalore Palace, and from the elegant Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace to the modern marvels of the IT parks, the city's architectural beauty is truly captivating.
