March 3rd, is the day of Hina Matsuri in Japan - a festival celebrating healthy growing and happiness of girls.

And the Hina Matsuri is all about gorgeous Hina Ningyo dolls.

Traditionally, families display heirloom dolls - some passed down for generations - from mid-February to early March.

Cold Monday morning in Kyoto, with the mountains on the west and the north are wearing snowy cap, but we are able to find little signs in town that spring is arriving before too long.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is one of the best plum blossom viewing sites in Kyoto whose deity, Michizane Sugawara(a court officer in the 9th century) was in love with plum.

February 3rd is the day of Risshun, or the first day of spring in the lunar calendar.

But in reality, it’s still halfway through the cold winter, the time between the merriment of New Year’s and the cherry blossoms of spring.

Many East Asian countries hold festivals in which the end of winter is symbolized by the expulsion of evil and welcoming of good spirits.

In Japan this festival is called Setsubun.

Around December 20-23 each year, the North Pole tilts its furthest from the sun, bringing the shortest day and longest night of the year.

The day is called Toji, or the winter solstice in Japan (this year December 22nd).

And we can’t talk about the day of Toji without yuzu.

With a refreshing aroma and sour taste very similar to lemon, this deep yellow-skinned yuzu has been a favorite fruit of Japanese people for a long time.

Read and learn more about yuzu and a Japanese winter tradition.

Even the deity laments,
Seeing the beautiful colored leaves of Oharano fall,
Please, wind of Mt. Oshio,
Blow soft so that we can enjoy it longer…

— Waka poem by Koreie Fujiwara, a Heian-period aristocrat (11th century)

Feel and enchanted by the colors in Kyoto - “Autumn Hiking in Rural Nishiyama” is now on our Seasonal page.
