Early this morning, around 1:49 a.m., Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a structure fire at a vacant building, located at 2661 Walnut Hill Lane, in Northwest City of Dallas - City Hall.
The fire itself isn't what's been making news however. If you didn't already know, one of our firefighters had a large section of a wall collapse on top of him during the course of operations. While the visual sent chills up your spine, there was a collective sign of relief when he got up and freed himself from the burning debris. Co-workers acted swiftly to attend to him and get him to the hospital so we can now report the following:
DFR is happy to report that Captain, Ronald J. Janek (pronounced ya – neck), the firefighter injured in this morning’s wall collapse on Walnut Hill Lane, is expected to be okay. He is being admitted to Parkland Hospital for an undisclosed time, after suffering significant injuries to his back, foot as well as some minor burns to his neck; all of which are non-life-threatening. Though the Captain is in stable condition, he has a long road to recovery. He has received a number of visits from his friends and co-workers, and has several family members, to include his Wife, children, brothers and parents, close by his side as he begins his recovery.
Captain Janek has been with the department for 28 years and works out of Fire Station 19, as part of the department’s Urban Search and Rescue team. On behalf of his entire family, he wishes to thank everyone who has expressed their concerns, and sent well-wishes, after seeing the video of the collapse from the morning’s news coverage. At this time, he and his family prefer not to speak publicly about the matter, and has expressed their wishes for privacy while he recovers from his injuries.
