After decades of waiting for a fitting tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the nation is to get a statue of the legendary freedom fighter at India Gate by August 15, 2022. A hologram of Netaji will be seen under the canopy at India Gate until the statue is installed there. The hologram will be distinctly visible only at night. PM Narendra Modi unveiled the hologram statue on the occasion of NetajiтАЩs birthday today. The statue will be sculpted out of a single-piece granite stone sourced from Telangana.

A statue of EnglandтАЩs King George V was there under the canopy, which was removed in 1968. Happy with the governmentтАЩs historic move to honour Netaji and his contribution to the freedom movement, NetajiтАЩs daughter Anita Boss said, тАЬNetaji had a vision for the financial and economic strength of India and had set up a Planning Commission even before the country got independence.тАЭ

India has always been a land of diverse cultural identities. Every culture has their own festivals which are of great cultural significance. Few such festivals like Magh Bihu, Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal are celebrated in the month of January. Each of them have their own history and significance.

As per the understanding of a wide range of people across India, the two days in the month of January every year are meant to celebrate crops, harvesting and agriculture.

After the common celebrations associated with the New Year, the first set of the festival comes two weeks after the first day of the year.

Bihu, Lohri, Pongal and Makar Sankranti are festivals that represent different cultures but unite under one country тАУ India. All the festivals are loosely related to one single premise тАУ crops, but vary depending on the part of the country it is celebrated in. LetтАЩs look at each of these four festivals that people celebrate together, separately:

BIHU:

The Northeast region of India celebrates the ending of harvesting season with the name of Magh Bihu. Various types of events can be seen in different villages during Magh Bihu that including Bonfire (Meji), Egg fight (Koni Juj), Bullfight among others. People enjoy the festival with traditional dance and cook various types of food called Pithas which is mainly enjoyed during Bihu time. Traditional dance, traditional games, and activities such as Cooking in Meji (Bamboo Huts) define the festival in the state of Assam. It is believed that the festival started from the time when people of the valley started tilling the land. Bihu is believed to be as old as river Brahmaputra.

LOHRI:

A large bonfire with people dancing, singing, and having a good time is what contains the essence of this festival. Lohri is celebrated a day before Makar Sankranti and is primarily celebrated in North India, especially the agricultural state of Punjab. It marks the end of the sowing season. Delicacies and snacks, for example, Rewri, Peanuts, Sarson Ka Saag, Makke Ki Roti, etc., are enjoyed with full vigour.

MAKAR SANKRANTI

Makar Sankranti follows Lohri by a day, and is a popular festival in most parts of the country, but the festivity is at its prime, mainly in North India. The festival marks the advent of the harvest season and also signifies the end of Winter as the days start getting longer. Many people dip in the sacred waters of Ganga and offer their prayers to the Sun. In many parts of North India, kites take over the skies, and delicious sweets such as Til ke Laddoo are enjoyed.

PONGAL

As we move down towards the South, the festivities celebrating the harvest season turn into Pongal, where the harvesting of sugarcane and rice spark joy in the people of South India. Pongal is a four-day festival that starts from January 14, and is vibrant as people decorate their cattle, paint their houses, and carry out pious processions.

18/12/2021

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday left for a three-day state visit to the neighbouring Bangladesh, where he is slated to attend the 50th Victory Day celebrations as the guest of honour. During this visit, he will hold talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart and visit the Ramna Kali temple in the nationтАЩs capital Dhaka.

It is worth noting that the Ramna Kali Temple located in Dhaka is the same place which was demolished by the Pakistan Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. At that time, the barbaric Pakistani Army had slaughtered hundreds of Hindus inside the temple before eventually razing it down.

The killings were a part of Operation Searchlight launched by the Pakistani Army to quell the demand for a separate Bangladesh by eliminating its proponents. As a result, thousands of Hindus and Bengali Muslims who resided in East Pakistan and were hankering for a separate motherland were butchered by the Pakistani Army.

As per reports, bullets were fired inside the 600-year-old temple on March 27, 1971. The Pakistani Army did not even spare the chief abbot of the temple, Shrimath Swami Parmanand Giri, who held the presiding deity of the temple in his hand in order to protect it from being damaged. However, the Pakistani Army killed the priest, along with Hindu men, women and children who had taken refuge in the temple to stave off the onslaught. It is estimated that more than 250 Hindus were murdered in cold blood before the temple was demolished.

~~~Construction of Ramna kali temple~~~~
However, the Bangladesh government advised that the construction should take place not at the original site but some distance away from it. It allotted 2.5 acres of land for temple but its construction was mired in bureaucratic red-tape. It was only after the then MEA Sushma SwarajтАЩs visit in 2017 did the work for temple construction commenced. India had then announced that it would help Bangladesh in the construction of the Ramna Kali Temple.
Now, President Kovind is expected to inaugurate and review the newly constructed section of the same Kali temple. He is on three-day visit to Bangladesh, from December 15 to 17, during which he is expected to meet various dignitaries. On Wednesday, on the first day of his visit, he is scheduled to pay tribute at the National Martyrs Memorial in Savar, following which he will be meeting Muktijoddhas of the 1971 war.
