Coney Island Reggae and Reggae Under The Bridge are back this summer, starting Sunday June 4th, but with changes.

The Brooklyn division of NYC Parks (under Martin Maher) is limiting sound at all BK parks to “no more than 4 speakers stacked no higher than 6 feet” and events must end by 6 p.m. This prevents us from using Chanter’s main system at Coney Island. It does not apply to K Bridge Park, which is a state park.

These rules disregard the cultural history of Jamaican soundsystem and are indifferent to the flawless track record we have had with more than 40 events since 2010, not to mention that the events are now part of the cultural life and richness of New York City.

I have spent the last two months exploring formal channels for appeal for a grandfather clause and have had support from the offices of Sen. Kevin Parker, Sen. Leroy Comrie, and Bronx BP Donovan Richards (who is bringing us is back to the Rockaways), but to no avail as yet with regard to Coney Island.

Because of the sponsorship from it’s essential that the full schedule of events happen in Brooklyn, even if scaled down.

I know many of you will find this disappointing and frustrating, to put it mildly. I share those feelings.

I have put enormous effort into these events over the years - as has - and have received nothing but love from the community, for which I am grateful.

I look forward to making the best of the situation and hopefully finding a resolution that does not involve leaving Coney Island, the original home of the concept. As a result, I’m launching the co-branding of “Small Axe Sessions.”

We look forward to seeing you at West 20/21st on the Boardwalk, 2-6 p.m. on June 4th and July 2nd, and at K Bridge on August 6th and Sept. 17th (12-7 pm) thanks to

❤️📢💛📢🖤📢💚

Reggae happenings this weekend include Saturday 8-noon and on Sunday from 1-5 with … this is my first time playing at Lily’s 7A location, rewind 10 years and I spent every Saturday afternoon on Radiolily at the original location. While this will be no Antiques Roadblock, I’m looking forward to some good energy, in the form of both sound waves and food. Bonus Saturday activity will be a test drive of my new Small Axe Sessions at K Bridge Park around 4 pm with 🖤💛💚

What better way to spend a Friday afternoon than playing some records on Orange Street, aka Beat Street, the original birthplace of ska, rocksteady, reggae, every damn thing … thanks to for the invite. Also glad to play alongside the great and guests, then I’ll pass by Chinna Smith’s in St Andrew Park for some brawta. Wrapping up month in Jamaica with almost no social media activity. Tell me you’re proud of me.

Were there any early signs that you would grow up to become a reggae DJ?

(Pauses) “Some people knew, and the rest should have been paying attention.”

Thomas Asher Hammang took this photo of Jimi Hendrix in 1968, a majestic moment of one of the greatest artists of modern times.

About 9 years ago when I was at his place to look at his record collection, my jaw dropped at the photo, and he gave it to me. It has a place of pride in my home and always will.

Today would have been Hendrix’s 80th birthday. 🕊

I bought this print today, which has been at VP Records in Queens for more than four decades, with many years spent in the basement. It caught my eye for the incredible detail and realism, but I had overlooked its other significance until recently. (Swipe left for the reveal.) According to Miss Pat, the one footed artist, Ras Daniel Heartman, used to sell his work in front of Randy’s on North Parade in the 1970s. He may not have been famous, but he was able to get really nice prints made of his work, and I am proud to have this one.

Condolences to Tabby Diamonds’ family and to Bunny and Judge. This was the most senseless of murders, the destruction of a Jamaican cultural treasure, after all he gave us. I don’t know how they go forward. Pictured is my tribute issue of the 400 Years zine with Roger Steffens’ amazing cover photo. I think this is the best image ever taken of Tabby.

💔Rest In Peace Domenico DeMarco, the greatest to ever do it. What a special man and a special place I have in my heart for Di Fara. Having this place within walking distance has been one of the biggest quality of life bonuses of where I live. Glad the shop is in good hands for the future, but man I just liked knowing he was there all that time. Condolences to the family.

Another year and more grateful than ever. I think I’ve spent 7 birthdays on this beautiful island. Despite many changes, it turns up magical moments from every corner and never ceases to amaze me. These pictures were taken at Fish Pot at White River, a “capture land” type restaurant near where a bridge washed out. 🇯🇲 nice, don’t it? 🖤💛💚

One of my life goals is to curate a Dennis Brown box set. Little did I know at the time, but I created the next best thing when I made these playlists for Apple Music in 2017, now part of the Crown Prince’s legacy in the digital streaming world. If you’re on Spotify instead of Apple, my longer working list is called In His Own Way, link in bio to all. 👑 original

Dennis Brown was born 65 years ago on February 1st. In my bio link you can stream parts of my interview with him from May 1999, which was his last as far as I know. I wrote this lengthy feature, Elegy For The Crown Prince, drawn from the interview, for The Beat magazine later that year. With eternal respect and gratitude.

I missed Glen Adams’ birthday by a few days, but I wanted to dip into the archives for this lovely slide photo I took of him performing in Mamaroneck in 2006. He has become one of my favorite rocksteady singers. His visit to is one of the highlights of my broadcasting career.

I spent about a week this summer at Goldeneye, where I met Ali Campbell and Astro from UB40. Astro died over the weekend, much to everyone’s shock. I quickly got a sense of what close friends they were and can only imagine the magnitude of the loss. I had a really great time getting to know them, if briefly, while enjoying the place that has inspired so much globally influential creativity. Ali described Astro as an original skinhead. Those are some unassailable credentials. Ali’s wife took these photos, and went out of her way to have them model in the shirts I gave them. ❤️💛💚
