So, yesterday my daughter said, in a nutshell, “Dad, you think differently.”

It was such a compliment - and fortunately she meant it that way. We were just having our typical random convo bouncing from idea to thought to something we find amusing (such as last mile distribution with VEHO). But it also turned into a conversation about the importance of “no box” or bare minimum, out of the box thinking (a concept I don’t really like). How do we get more young folks to think differently? How do we infuse critical thinking skills?

It’s one of the reasons I’m passionate about the “Impactful Sandbox” program between the The Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education and Cloudcast / Iloveschoolcast.

WE just HAVE to infuse the ability to think differently into as many young people as possible. The world has many challenges, none of which will be solved with thought stasis.

On this Monday, I’m encouraging everyone to think differently about some challenge, some issue, some matter. Try and see it entirely differently and the answer might always have been there. It’s hard to be a subjective participant and an objective observer, but give it a try.

Let’s make this the beginning of the National Think Differently Day.

When I say there is a dim future without SMART KIDS, I refer not to simplistic, constrained, and easily manipulated measurement of “smart” as in academic tests. No way, no way.

Here’s five examples of how kids become smart, empowered, self-aware and prepared to grow, think, dream, and achieve, and contribute to the world.

Absent literacy, there is no democracy. There is no American future. As many know, I’m becoming more and more laser focused on what are atrocious reading levels in America. And the lazy acceptance of these levels is perhaps even more appalling. This is one of the driving issues behind Iloveschoolcast from Cloudcast, as literacy is directly embedded into students creating podcasts. It’s also why The Gap Minders is so important, a great show with Jose L. Cruz and Nancy Sasaki.

PS. And when we talk existential threats and the non-stop beating of the drums, I’d say the existential threat is right here on this issue. The #1 nation in reading, math, and science is….China.

Access Youth Academy is rolling with Cloudcast’s SchoolCAST program. Their students are crushing it. Amazing name they’ve created and now working on all of the other elements of their show!

Yet another great day with the team at EJE Academies Charter School. Yes, they are crushing it with podcasting, but the VOICE curriculum is about foundational fluencies, priceless life skills, and even a concept called process mapping.

Team Cloudcast - Charles Parisi, David Tos Varcardipone, Stephanie Spiridakis - is having too much fun with the first ever program of its kind with one of a kind students.

Another great SchoolCAST day with the phenomenal middle school students at EJE Academies Charter School. This team is working hard on their school podcast and have come up with a name for their show…..you can tell they are having fun! Our “VOICE” curriculum + great students + awesome educators = success. Cloudcast - can you smell what we’re cooking? (That line was suggested by Charles Parisi).

One of the initial rollout schools is with the incredible students at San Pasqual Academy. They are doing amazing work in creating the school’s podcast, The HEARTbeat Podcast. HEART is the acronym for their school ethos.

They have created ORIGINAL music, designed a great podcast tile, and have five great episodes outlined. Check out their amazing podcast tile….all drawn by hand and then digitized.

Cloudcast, Asymmetrical Evolution, Charles Parisi, Ed Hiner, Dave Varcardipone, Lindsey Griffin, Nate Jones are all aboard! Thanks to Principal Miyasaki and Team San Pasqual Academy for saying “yes”!
