We are excited to announce our collaboration with Director Ahmed Naga on the soundtrack for his new short documentary film, "Hanji." The film explores the history and culture of Korean hanji paper, and Mahrajaz's music perfectly captures the beauty and essence of this ancient art form.

The link to the film in 4k is in the comments!

Hanji is a traditional Korean paper made from the bark of the mulberry tree. It is known for its strength, durability, and beauty. Hanji has been used for centuries in Korea to make everything from books and scrolls to clothing and furniture.

In his film, Ahmed Naga explores the rich history and culture of hanji paper. He also examines the role that hanji plays in the lives of contemporary Koreans.

In "Hanji," Ahmed Naga takes viewers on a journey through the world of hanji paper. Naga interviews hanji artisan Mr. So Bean who shares his insights into the cultural significance of this unique art form.

Mahrajaz and Ahmed Naga have been working closely together to create a soundtrack that captures the beauty of hanji. The music is a mix of traditional Korean instruments and modern electronic sounds.

"Hanji" is a beautiful and moving film, and Mahrajaz is proud to be a part of this project. We believe that Naga's film is an important exploration of Korean culture and heritage. We are also honoured to have the opportunity to work with such a talented filmmaker. We hope that our music will help to enhance the viewer's experience and bring the story of hanji to life.

The soundtrack for "Hanji" will be released on Mahrajaz's Soundcloud soon. Stay tuned for more updates! In the meantime, you can check out the trailer for "Hanji" here:

How can we understand TONE through RHYTHM?

--
Introduction:
We can define music as rhythm and tone (or pitch), as do many theorists, but I argue that understanding rhythm is more important.

Rhythm and pitch are the same thing, in a physical and an ontological sense, but RHYTHM is more intrinsic to our base perceptions, because lesser animals hear rhythm, while only humans perceive tonal harmony.

--
Here are the facts:
1. The hertz (or hz) is the unit of frequency, equal to one event or cycle per second. (meaning 25hz = 25 times something happens each second)

2. Sound is compressed air, so frequency of sound = frequency of air compression.

3. Humans can only hear sound between 20hz and 20,000hz as pitch.

4. Humans can only feel rhythm up to 10hz (10 beats per second or 600bpm). We can't distinguish rhythm faster than 10hz.

--
This means that rhythmic repetition of compressed air at a constant interval above 20hz (known as sound frequency) is what we can identify as pitch.

The same rhythmic repetition slowed down below 10hz can be heard as a constant rhythmic pulse.

Between 10hz to 20hz something is perceived, but it is neither rhythm nor tone; a perceptual gap. Above 20,000hz, nothing is perceived, but the rhythm is still there.

This means that rhythm is tone. They are THE SAME THING, but only our perception of them is different.

However, we can abstract tone from rhythm, but not vice versa, and that is why I argue that a rhythmic understanding is the most fundamental aspect to musicality.

--
My conclusive recommendation is to learn how rhythm interacts with itself, which happens in polyrhythm, polymeter, compound rhythm, metric modulation, and others.
These concepts are useful and important in the study of rhythm, and subsequently help in abstracting tonal harmony, which can be thought of as higher frequency rhythms.
