214 || SAVE YOUR STUDENT ID

This week, Rhiannon has a (probably literal) bone to pick with a certain London-based institution. She discusses the history of museums from ancient times to present day, and goes on several long digressions about related concepts. Topics include public mourning, animals as entertainment, what feels like the entire state of Pennsylvania, and the institutionalized “finders keepers” mentality.

📖 Word of the Week 📖

posy, n.: a small bunch of flowers

An archaic meaning of the word “posy” is a short poetical motto engraved on the inner surface of a ring. This stems (pun entirely intended) from the custom of giving flowers as a gift along with a written verse; a posy-ring was at times used to secure the small bunch. A slightly different spelling, “poesy”, is an old word for “poetry”.

✨ Recommendation of the Week ✨

Matthew recommended three plants for us: Vietnamese violets (actually a gesneriad), Tasmanian violets, and Parma violets. In addition to giving us some plant care advice in the episode, he was also kind enough to share pictures with me to show you. Swipe to see photos of some specimens from Matthew’s collection, and check out for more!

211 || AIMEZ VOUS LE VIOLETTE? || FEAT. MATTHEW

Rhiannon is joined by Matthew, a horticulture enthusiast, to talk about the history of violets. We discuss how the flowers we call violets have been affected over the years by selective breeding, botanical fashion trends, and technological advancements. Matthew provides a selection of historical and mythological anecdotes to round out our discussion.

210 || THIS IS NOT GOING TO BECOME A TICKLING PODCAST

This week, Rhiannon takes inspiration from her podcasting forebears and investigates the world of tickling. We explore the science behind tickling, its use by humanity for a variety of different purposes, and, of course, its etymological background. Rhiannon discovers several new corners of the internet.

Unicode maintains a list of all accepted, declined, and pending proposals for new emojis on their website. Some of my favorite rejected proposals are Angry Poo, six different iterations of cannabis, dumpster fire, kick rocks, and “winking with thermometer”.

The ace flag and opossum were both declined, which I find upsetting, honestly.

Why is there no Carrot emoji proposal yet?

208 || QWERTY, FLIRTY, AND THRIVING || ALPHABETS, PART II

Rhiannon follows up last week’s discussion of the history of alphabets with an investigation of alphabetical order. We consider various keyboard layouts, the rise of emojis, and Rhiannon’s favorite book: the dictionary. We answer listener questions and (finally…) embark upon the season’s first rabbit hole.

205 || TRIPLE LETTER SCORE || EPISODE GENERATOR

This week on the tell, Rhiannon is buffeted by the Wiki Winds into the world of competitive Scrabble. We talk about the history of the game, those who play it, and what counts as a word. Shockingly, Rhiannon successfully avoids ranting about the existence of dictionaries.

Outtake: Hattori, Seiko, and Michael Scott

Seiko, a Japanese word with the character meaning “exquisite”, is homophonous with the word meaning “success”, and was adopted in 1924 as the trademark name of the watchmaking company founded by Kintarō Hattori. Hattori began as a clockmaking apprentice at the age of 13 and by the age of 25 had developed a reputation for providing high-quality timepieces.

On December 25, 1969, Seiko launched the Astron. This world-first quartz watch cost 450,000 Yen, at the time equivalent to the price of a medium-sized car. The brand is known for quality on par with famed Swiss watchmaking traditions.
