Lady Jailed For Assaulting Lagos Official, Ignoring Pedestrian Bridge

A 22-year-old lady, Fasia Ajoke, was on Thursday sentenced to seven months and three weeks in prison by the Special Offences Court at Bolade-Oshodi for assaulting a Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps female officer while on duty.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Thursday.

Wahab said Ajoke was also guilty of resisting arrest and refusing to use the pedestrian bridge.

His post read, "The Special Offences Court at Bolade-Oshodi today convicted a lady, 22-year-old Fasia Ajoke to seven months and three weeks in jail for assaulting a female operative of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) on lawful duty, resisting lawful arrest and refusing to make use of the Ile-Epo pedestrian bridge, thereby endangering her life in the process.

"She was arraigned before Chief Magistrate S.A Adefioye of the Lagos State Special Offences (Mobile Court), Bolade-Oshodi on offences bordering on conducting herself in a manner likely to breach peace, obstruction and breach of peace by crossing the highway."

The commissioner urged residents to desist from assaulting environmental officers and to prioritise using pedestrian bridges.

He wrote, "We enjoin every well-meaning Lagosians to desist from assaulting our environmental officers and also make use of the pedestrian bridges as the state will not hesitate to prosecute anyone found breaking the law."

The PUNCH reported on Tuesday that the Lagos State Government arrested seven miscreants for allegedly assaulting environmental officials during the removal of shanties and illegal structures along the Jakande Estate in the state.

It had also reported in February that the government described the crossing of major highways in the state by pedestrians as an offence adding that any defaulter caught will be prosecuted.

Weeds and faeces have taken over the 400-seater Lagos State Theatre located in the Oregun area of the state, which was destroyed by protesters during the EndSARS agitation.

Sky Nigeria gathered that all installations in the theatre that were meant to promote tourism, hospitality, entertainment, and the arts together with sports had been looted, with the facilities being overrun by faeces.

The theatre which was unveiled on April 24, 2019, by former President Muhammadu Buhari has remained fallow for three years since the destruction.

Our correspondent who visited the theatre, which was built by the administration of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday, observed that the entire premises, including the security building before the entrance into the theatre, had become a dumpsite.

PUNCH Metro also observed that the foyer between the three-apartment restroom and the staircase that led to the theatre itself was littered with faeces with stench oozing from the area.

When our correspondent strolled into the main theatre, it was observed that a part of the roofing along the passage was dangling and nearing collapse, while the entire place was bushy.

A resident of the area identified simply as Azeez, who frequents the premises, claimed that the lootings were perpetrated by some miscreants during the protest after the place had been abandoned by the government.

Zamfara State Government on Monday said it supported actions taken by the Federal Government to ensure the reinstatement of Mohamed Bazoum as the President of the Niger Republic.

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Dauda Lawal on Broadcast Media and Press Affairs, Mustafa Kaura, who said this in an interview with Sky Nigeria added that the state government would not demand the reopening of the borders with the Niger Republic since it was an exclusive duty of the Federal Government.

He said this as border communities in Sokoto State lamented the closure of the border with Niger.

Speaking to Sky News Nigeria on the phone, Kaura said, “The Federal Government has found it necessary to close the borders as a result of the military coup in Niger Republic following the agreement with the ECOWAS.’’

He said the state government was really aware of the hardships encountered by the people of both Nigeria and the Niger Republic especially those living in border communities.

He, however, lamented that there was nothing the state government could do.

He said, “Everybody is aware that people are suffering due to border closure but since it is the decision of the ECOWAS to punish the military junta, we have to bear the situation and be more patient.”

“I am telling you that Zamfara State Government is never in support of the military government in the Niger Republic and it will abide by whatever decision s taken if it will succeed in returning the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to his position.”

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has promised to begin the inspection and assessment of all federal roads in two weeks.

He stated this on Monday while speaking during a press conference at the Federal Ministry of Works in Abuja, after the swearing-in ceremony of 45 ministers.

According to him, under his leadership, bureaucratic processes will be a thing of the past, as no file will be expected to be left unattended for more than two hours without genuine explanations.

He said: “I am going to be training tomorrow. I will offer my address to you tomorrow. I have indicated to see the contractors. And after taking briefings from the Heads of Departments, we will meet with the contractors because I am not an office person, I am a field person. God giving us life, with some of you in that department, I will be inspecting the Lokojo-Benin Road and Lokoja-Abuja Road.
