Pudgyplane Sharing my aviation journey

I've been struggling to perfect wingovers and once again John has graciously devoted his time to help me out.

A wingover is a flight maneuver in which a plane is put into a climbing turn until nearly stalled after which the nose is allowed to fall while the turn is continued until normal flight is attained in a direction opposite to that in which the maneuver was entered

I need a lot more practice with my rudder and ailerons to keep it tight and crisp.

As in life, an aviator never really stops learning. As you fly with different people you will always learn a few new tricks that help you become a better pilot.

In this instance I was doing my flight control checks as part of my pre takeoff checklist and John gave me a tip that would someday hopefully help me catch a fault before I start flying.

John is an aerobatic pilot and flight instructor. We all appreciate the time he spends teaching us. When he is not flying he sits in a studio with the likes of Madonna, Elton John and Eminen producing music.

For those who are wondering John isn't wearing a helmet because of Top Gun Maverick.

Preflight (360 walk around)

Do you get the urge to be lazy and just go through the motions of performing a 360 inspection just for the sake of saying you’ve done it? I sometimes do but I try my best to fight the urge telling myself its better to catch things on the ground than having to deal with them in the air.

What do you usually look out for when doing your walk around?

Photo below shows the starter cover come off after the two bolts holding it came loose thereby brushing up on the flywheel causing a very metallic rattling sound.

Notice the pink stuff on the bolts and nuts, they indicate wether a nut or bolt is loose when the marks are no longer aligned.

Have a great weekend and safe flying!

Nothing wrong with dreaming but set short, medium and long term goals. Don't
let complacency creep in. Keep striving to be better at what you do.

Flying is a perishable skill, if you don't use it you lose it.

2021.1003 SAFETY DIARY

Do you perform a final walkaround before your flight?

I personally make it a habit to perform a final walk around before getting in the airplane. We usually dont have the luxury of having ground crew support when we operate so a final walkaround is the last chance to spot if the fuel caps are secure, baggage door is closed, tow bar is still attached or pitot tube cover is still attached.

In a recent flight , my crewmate and I were under pressure to keep on or ahead of schedule and minimize our turnaround time so there is that ever tempting possibility of just ticking items off the checklist.

Trust me don’t give in to that temptation. Checklists and memory items are there for the very purpose of reminding you in those moments when you are most likely to miss things.

I was strapped in getting our clearance when my crew mate told me he’d be performing a final walkaround. Guess what? I had forgotten to stow the small step ladder that we brought to aid in refueling.

I hope sharing this helps others in being more vigilant.

Fly safe and Blue Skies.

El Nido to Woodland with Good Boys Flying

Vic aka Z and I finally get paired up to fly to El Nido, he flew the leg to El Nido which is featured in one of The Good Boys Flying episodes. My leg was flying back to Woodland from El Nido.

The great thing about flying with others is that you have to readjust your CRM (Crew Resource Management) to how they fly.

I hope you like the video and please do follow on Instagram. I appreciate the support.

* This is not a training video and nor is it monetized. I am purely sharing my love of flying and hope to inspire others who are interested in aviation.

First time flying on a fully decked out Garmin glass cockpit Cessna 182 RG from Manila to Lubang.

We took off runway 13 on a hazy day mostly caused by VOG (Volcanic Fog) from Taal Volcano as the media claims. On the flight Capt. Daryl and Capt. Dan flew the Manila - Lubang leg.

This is the first time I was able to experience flying a full glass cockpit C182 with all the bells and whistles one could possibly wish for if you were into cockpit automation.

This 182 is equipped with a Garmin G3X for its main display and a Garmin GTN750 for GPS and comms, the GTN750 was a real treat with its bigger screen real estate since I was used to the smaller screen on the GTN650 on the 172 I often fly.

This GTN 750 is subscribed to Garmin Connext which allowed the unit to make satphone calls, display weather and send text messages on the Iridium satellite network. The aircraft also had an Angle Of Attack Sensor, Autopilot and ADSB In-Out.

On the return flight home Capt Darly let me from the right seat and for the first time in my life I wished he didn’t turn the autopilot on when we reached our cruising altitude.

Thank you to Topflite Academy for allowing me to tag along on this trip and to Sky Aerotrade, Capt Daryl and Capt Dan.

Flying a helicopter for the first time.

Helicopters have always been my favorite flying machines and I hope and pray to realize that dream someday. Last month Dave was kind enough to give me a taste of what its like to hover a helicopter. In the video we also have Dave attempting to open a beer bottle with a bottle opener attached to the skid. Were we successful? What do you think? 🧐

Shout out to Dave Mccully for the 🚁 time. Thank you so much!

Flying extended times over water in single-engine light aircraft can sometimes be intimidating but risks can be mitigated with a well maintained airplane, good briefing for contingencies in case of partial or full engine power loss and Spidertracks.

Flying with Spidertracks gives everyone peace of mind that the location of the aircraft is always known while Spidertext allows the crew to communicate anything from latest weather information, flight updates up to ordering food for the crew prior to arrival.

ADSB (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast)

is a surveillance technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite navigation or other sensors and periodically broadcasts it, enabling it to be tracked.

This short video shows my iPad running Foreflight connected to the Stratux GPS with ADSB-In. Traffic (RP-C8013) is at our one o’clock 5200ft below us. This clearly gives pilots enhanced situational awareness especially while avoiding clouds during VFR operations.

I never was a fan of ultralights especially the open ones where you can see the ground from beneath your feet, some folks like that but it just wasn’t my cup of tea until I got a chance to fly with a friend on the Rans S-12.

Join me for a quick early morning flight as I fly over the rice fields just east of Woodland Airpark in Magalang, Pampanga. Flying early in the morning or almost late afternoon are my favorite times to fly.

If you want to experience flying Ultralights check out the Angeles City Flying Club’s Discovery program on Facebook and Instagram.
