Pilyara Press is excited to announce the international publication of Jennifer Scouller’s latest novel, The Rivertown Vet.

Until now The Rivertown Vet has only been available for Australian and New Zealand readers where it is published by Penguin Random House.

Our international readers can now join Jana and Mark on their captivating journey and discover the magic of second chances and the importance of fighting for what truly matters.

This slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance tells the story of local vet Jana Malinski, who along with her sister, runs a wombat sanctuary on their family’s peaceful property by the beautiful Murray River. But Jana’s routine is up-ended after a chance encounter with handsome accountant and single dad Mark – the man who broke her heart in high school.

Offered the opportunity to run Wildfell Park, the town zoo that has fallen into disrepair, Jana must push past her hostility to save the local landmark and home to countless native and exotic animals. But working alongside Mark every day isn’t easy, especially given the undeniable attraction between them. While she fights her feelings, a new danger emerges – one that could threaten the very existence of Wildfell Park and Jana’s dreams of an ideal future.

Set against the stunning backdrop of South Australia’s river country, The Rivertown Vet is a heartfelt and charming tale about community, conservation, and kindness.

Now for the giveaway! Paradise Valley is also now available for international audiences through Pilyara Press. As a thank you to our readers, for the next two weeks you can download it for free using this link. https://dl.bookfunnel.com/5gxcfsp7z1

"Paradise Valley is another brilliant read by Aussie author Jennifer Scoullar which I loved. Mystery, intrigue, corruption, lies, all with a dash of romance to the side ... Highly recommended. 5 Stars."

Well, this was unexpected! My children's picture book MY SILLY MUM (Serenity Press, 2016, illust. Veronica Rooke Fishbitten) was one of the top five recorded titles in the first quarter of the Australian Library and Information Association Online Storytime program!

I've just found this lovely reading of the book for Mother’s Day by City of Swan Libraries: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIwusfu8tgI&t=118s

For those looking for a warm-hearted book for children, My Silly Mum is still in print - more info about the book here: https://serenitypress.org/my-silly-mum/

Online Storytime was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic halting in-person library programming, including storytimes and author talks. Libraries needed to move programs online and with the help of authors, illustrators and publishers, Online Storytime helped do just that. I'm thrilled to be a part of it!

Our Story

‘The eagle represents the freedom and strength Pilyara Press adds to our new-found independence. Like the eagle, our books soar.’ - Jennifer Scoullar

In 2018, a trail-blazing group of professional writers left behind the Goliath world of publishing to form an independent small press. The traditionally-published authors – formerly of Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster and Text – embraced the opportunities offered by the digital age by striking out in a pioneering new direction. Pilyara Press is their brainchild. Founded by best-selling author Jennifer Scoullar, Pilyara Press offers readers a diverse and distinctive range of books that all have one thing in common – they are page-turners.

Joining forces with authors Sydney Smith, Kate Belle and Kathryn Ledson, Jennifer says Pilyara Press is a galvanising new vision of how publishing can be done. ‘We’re a bunch of professionals,’ says Jennifer. ‘As well as our own particular brand of fiction, each of us brings a very specific talent to the group. I’m a former lawyer and know the ins-and-outs of publishing, Sydney is a recognised writing mentor and structural editor, Kate is a professional project manager, and Kathryn is a qualified editor and publicist. ‘Why are we doing this? We want to cast off the restrictions and compromise of the traditional publishing model. We want to access the global market through digital publishing on our own terms. We want control over what we write; we want to be true to our art. Without the commercial imperatives of corporate publishing, we can do that. Profit is not our bottom line.’ Pilyara – an indigenous word for Eagle – is the name of Jennifer’s family bushland property in Victoria, Australia, where she grew up.

In 2019, Monique Mulligan and Desney King joined the Pilyara Press team. In 2020, Jenn J McLeod, Shelley Kenigsberg and Olwyn Conrau brought the total team members to nine.
