SM Tarlac illuminates magic with fantasy-themed Christmas Centerpiece
As the festive season unfolds, SM City Tarlac proudly presents a magical journey with the launch of their captivating Christmas Centerpiece on October 29 open for viewing and photo at the mall atrium.
This year's fantasy-themed Christmas Centerpiece of the mall is a towering 30-foot Golden Christmas Tree adorned with sparkling lights and golden ornaments. Surrounding the golden tree are displays of Christmas carriage, towers, carousel horses, magnificent ferris wheel, and golden reindeers which will take you on a whimsical ride.
During the launch, mallgoers are treated to a delightful Christmas celebration featuring the playful Santa Clause, and singing of classic Christmas songs by San Pedro Chorale. Gracing the event from the local government to represent Tarlac City Mayor Cristy Angeles were City Councilor Henry De Leon and ABC President Winston Torres.
Mallgoers can visit SM City Tarlac to experience where SM Supermalls aims to offer a joyful world of the longest, brightest, and happiest holiday celebration for everyone.

SM Supermalls Celebrates 65th Anniversary with a Super Fun Run
In celebration of SM’s 65th anniversary, employees from the SM Group of Companies, including SM Investments Corporation, SM Retail, Inc. and its affiliates, SM Store, SM Markets, SM Prime Holdings, SM Development Corporation, and SM Supermalls joined the Super Fun Run held last October 22.
In SM City Tarlac, a total of 160 participants took to the streets for a Fun Run that featured both a 6.5k and a 3k route. The event was a testament to SM's enduring spirit of unity and community engagement.
The success of this event would not have been possible without the support of dedicated team of volunteers and the generous contributions from sponsors and the partnership with the LGU. Their unwavering commitment and contributions were instrumental in making this event a reality.

ACE creates a more water-efficient home with SM
Water security is a very simple concept - it’s making sure we and generations to come have enough clean water to last a lifetime. ACE Hardware share their best tools and devices you need to make sure your house is a water-saving one:
1. Hose Nozzles
Are you a plantita or plantito using a garden hose to water your greens? Consider adding a shut-off valve at the nozzle end to give you more precision and minimize water wasted when moving across sections of your garden.
2. Shower Aerators
If you still prefer a shower over the trusty tabo, install a water-saving shower head with aerators. These mix air with water, which means 50% less water used without compromising your shower experience.
3. Leak Repair Supplies
Even the smallest of leaks can waste a significant amount of water over time. Regularly inspect your plumbing system and keep basic tools like a strong, rubberized and waterproof leak tape that can help you tackle minor leaks asap!
4. Toilet Repair Kit
Toilets are notorious for raising your water bill when they develop leaks that go unnoticed. A simple and cost-effective solution is to install a toilet repair kit. These prevent the endless refilling of a leaky tank, and can even “lock” itself to alert you that something needs fixing.
5. Rainwater-harvesting Drum
Building your own rainwater catchment system is not as difficult as you think! All you need is a large water drum with a secure lid and a fine mesh or screen for filtering, which can easily be found at your nearest ACE Hardware store. Connect it to your gutter system with downspouts and voila! An eco-friendly solution to collect and store rainwater for outdoor tasks like watering your garden and washing your car.
Water efficiency has always been at the forefront of SM group’s advocacies under the SM Green Movement. Aside from fulfilling customers’ needs for a more water-efficient home, SM properties have been recycling water since the 1990s resulting to an average of 4 million cubic meters of water saved annually. WHAT I LEARNED FROM TATANG: EMPLOYEES AND COLLEAGUES SHARE STORIES ABOUT SM’S HENRY SY, SR.
When the Mall of Asia opened in 2006, Henry Sy, Sr. was walking around the SM Store alongside Ma. Cecilia Abreu, who was then Assistant Vice President for Store Operations.
As is usually the case with Mr. Sy, he dropped by the Shoe section, checked the shoes and sandals, and then asked a few questions to the sales clerks. Holding one sandal, he asked Abreu a question that stayed with her: “Can our customers still afford to buy our sandals at this price?”
That consistency in understanding the market has stayed with SM through the years. Providing customers with affordable and quality items goes way back to Tatang - the name Mr. Sy, Sr. was fondly called by those whose lives he touched.
HONORING COMMMITMENTS, RESPECTING HARD WORK
Chelo Monasterio, once an SM Makati Branch Manager, said, “Tatang feels that SM is for everyone. That’s why di ba kahit pag typhoon, we will open. It was because, for Mr. Sy, we are a shelter for people.”
Monasterio joined SM 41 years ago, back when there were only three stores: Quiapo, Cubao, and Ermita. Climbing the ladder from HR manager, SM Makati Branch Manager to becoming SM Store President, and now a Consultant for SM Retail, Monasterio shared with pride, “We were trained by Tatang. He molded us to be what we are. He listened to what people had to say.”
BELIEVING IN YOUR VISION AND YOUR PEOPLE
In 1978, Rose Siaco was a practicing Medical Technologist who dared to try something outside of her comfort zone. She started her journey as Shoemart Inc.’s Supplies Officer that year. This is where her organizational skills and attention to detail would come in handy.
Seeing that Siaco thrives on challenges, she was given the task by Mr. Sy of becoming an acting warehouse manager. “I told him that it’s a man’s world, but he told me to train as a warehouse manager. He said to me, ‘I need your talent. I don’t need your physical strength. That would be too taxing for you,’” Siaco shared.
Other than thriving on new challenges, Siaco shared the reason why she stayed with SM for 45 years: “Kaya rin ako nagtagal, I don’t feel that they are other people. They treat their employees like family.”
STORIES SHARED, VISION REALIZED
Abreu shared another anecdote. “Supermarket. After his usual ‘rounds,’ Tatang bade farewell to everyone. He got into his car but before the car even left, Mr. Sy got out of the car. Everyone was still outside, waving and thanking him for the visit. Mr. Sy said in a clear voice ‘I want to thank each and every one of you for your hard work.’”
Sharing his vision, telling stories, and words of gratitude are the ways in which Henry Tatang Sy, Sr. showed he cared. Now, his employees and colleagues from the small stores of Quiapo and Makati continue to tell his stories and help the company realize his vision.

Every drop matters at SM: How to save water even during the rainy season
It is no secret that water is an essential resource used every day for cleaning ourselves, the food we eat, and our surroundings to prevent the spread of diseases. Here are nine practical strategies to save water:
1. Reduce Shower Time: Shorten showers by aiming for about just five minutes, to conserve water and energy for heating.
2. Don’t Leave the Tap Water Running: To prevent unnecessary water waste, turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, washing your face, and cleaning the dishes.
3. Reuse Water: Reuse water used for washing rice and vegetables or rinsing dishes to water indoor plants. Laundry water can also be used for toilet flushing.
4. Sweep Instead of Hose: Save water by sweeping the dirt on sidewalks and roads instead of using a hose to clean them.
5. Use Only Full Loads of Laundry: Wait until you have a full load of laundry before using your washing machine to maximize water efficiency.
6. Fix Leaks ASAP: Immediately fix even small leaks in your home's plumbing system because it can eventually waste a lot of water.
7. Water Plants Sensibly: Water your plants in the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation.
8. Collect Rainwater: Set up rain barrels or containers to capture rainwater for outside uses like cleaning, watering plants, or filling toilet bowls.
9. Raise awareness to others: Spread the word about water conservation among family, friends, and neighbors to create a positive impact and viable solutions.
SM Supermalls is aware of the fundamental role it can play in promoting water security and conservation. With that, water catchment basins in 25 malls have been installed to help prevent flooding as well as soil erosion during heavy downpours. In its malls nationwide, water is reused for non-potable use, such as cleaning the malls, flushing toilets, and watering plants. Last July, SM City Baguio introduced the first of its-kind in a mall-setting facility that converts rainwater into potable water and contributes to the city's water management measures.

Loyal dogs find new home during Pet Adoption at SM Tarlac
Cute puppies and grown dogs joined the graduating group of rescued pets from Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) at SM City Tarlac on July 23.
Gemma and Escobar, two of the adoptive dogs, have been best buddies for a very long time. AKF referred them as "The Loyal Dogs". Their owner passed away in December after a heart attack. Unaware that their furdad would not be returning, they waited for him in front of his apartment's door every day until AKF learned of their plight. There is no parting ways for the two as they were adopted together by Lumibao Family of Tarlac City.
Aside from the two devoted dogs, Yumi, also known as the Tripod Dog, officially joined the graduates. Despite having 3 legs, Yumi captured the hearts of Caluya Family from Victoria Tarlac.
A total of 13 adorable furbabies from AKF found their forever homes. Since 2022, AKF and SM City Tarlac has been good partners in conducting Pet Adoption Drive and other activities for pets at the mall.

SM City Baguio set to convert rainwater to potable water
BAGUIO CITY – SM City Baguio launched today the first of its kind in a mall-setting facility that will convert rainwater to potable water and help contribute to the city’s water conservation and recycling efforts.
“The mall’s Rainwater Filtration facility will supply the mall with enough potable water that can be redistributed to mall tenants for various uses including washing, cleaning and safe for drinking, to help reduce sourcing from the communities’ water table, leaving more water supply for the Baguio community to use,” SM Supermalls Senior Vice President Bien C. Mateo disclosed.
While SM has been recycling water for decades since the 1990’s, the water-saving innovation is part of SM Prime’s sustainability program towards responsible consumption and carbon footprint reduction, according to Mr. Mateo. “We invest in water conservation technology to eliminate water wastage and adopt stricter measures to reduce consumption. More innovations are being done to recycle more water and filter more rainwater across the properties and estates of SM Prime.”
In 2022, the real estate developer has recycled a total of 3.58 million cubic meters of water across its properties in the Philippines.
As of June 2023, SM Prime has already installed water catchment basins in 25 malls to help prevent flooding as well as soil erosion during sudden high volumes of rainfall.
The rainwater catchment system installed in SM City Baguio can draw and store a total of 51 million liters of rainwater in a year, based on 2022 PAGASA rainfall volume for Baguio City. This is equivalent to 20 Olympic-size swimming pools, 13.4M gallons of drinking water, 373,510 full baths and 672,318 10-minute showers.

During rain fall, rainwater is collected in the tank and treated for reuse within the mall. To make rainwater safe for use, the harvested water goes through a 6-step treatment processes – Multimedia Filtration, Water Softener, Activated Carbon, Ultra Filtration, Reverse Osmosis and Ozonization - the treated rainwater from the tank will be re-distributed as supply for the mall tenants for various uses including washing, cleaning and safe for drinking.
Working towards a better tomorrow for its communities, officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of Cordillera Administrative Region (DENR-CAR) have acknowledged the efforts of the mall in providing a long-term solution amidst the growing concern on water security.
“We are grateful for your attention to the predicament on water scarcity in Baguio City,” DENR Regional Director of CAR Engineer Jean Borromeo in a message to SM Prime. “Water scarcity is one of the biggest issues that Baguio is facing today because deep wells have already dried up the city’s water table. It is good to see how SM Prime is taking its responsibility to the environment seriously, practically addressing the biggest environmental threat to Baguio City.”
“This will greatly help reduce sourcing from the city’s water table and more water supply for the community to use. Not only does SM considers what’s best for its shopping customers, but also take into consideration the importance of water security as one of its priorities,” RD Borromeo added.
The Rainwater Filtration facility is one of SM Prime Holding’s initiatives to its commitment towards sustainable development in the communities it serves.
SM Prime is committed to supporting the United Nations in achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), including SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13: Climate Action which aims to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

SM promotes Sustainable Agriculture through Urban Gardening
As a steadfast advocate of green and sustainable living, SM Supermalls, through its corporate social responsibility arm, SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI), gears to support the government’s food security agenda through Urban Gardening.
The program is in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Tourism (DOT), SM Markets, SM Supermalls, St. Isidore "The Farmer" Learning Center, Inc., and Tarlac City Government.
Tarlac City Councilor KT Angeles graced the event and gave encouragement and support to the participants from Brgy. San Roque.
Twenty Five participants will undergo a 14-week training to be trained by urban gardening trainer Ms. Emmma Tolentino. SM mall garden will be utilized as a potential venue for hands-on training to showcase various urban garden agriculture techniques. On the other hand, SMFI will provide supplies and materials for barangay demo garden and start-up home materials.
The program aims to provide alternative livelihood opportunity, modern planting techniques that will enable improved and quality produce – which their families may consume at home or sell as source of extra income.

SMFI launches Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan in Gerona Tarlac
SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) recently launched its 261st batch of Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) on Sustainable Agriculture Program at Farmers Training Center, Brgy. Tagumabo, Gerona, Tarlac.
The program is in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Tourism (DOT), SM Markets, SM Supermalls, and St. Isidore "The Farmer" Learning Center, Inc.
SM’s KSK on Sustainable Agriculture Program is a farmer’s training which helps bring back hope in farming by updating the agricultural knowledge of our farmers. For 14 weeks, farmers are taught on effective backyard planting and small-scale farming techniques for fruits and vegetables. This helps improve the quality and quantity of their crops as well as provide organic food for their families.
