As engineers, our goal isn’t to just find just a solution. But to find a solution that LASTS.
Installing a hand pump for clean water on day 1 does NOT mean it will function on day 100 or 200.
Studies have shown that at any one time, 30-40% of hand pumps can be broken.
So if a family can’t have clean water for a month out of the year, what is the purpose for the pump in the first place?? 🤷🏽♀️
In the latest episode of the Global Health Pursuit Podcast, co-founder of Design Outreach, Abe Wright, speaks about how his team is raising the standard for product innovations that serve low resource settings around the world.
These communities deserve it, don’t you think?

Do we have an unconscious bias against the poor?
When interviewing Ajit George, Chief Operating Officer of Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project, he mentions how “We believe in giving a little bit of money to the poor... and we want the poor not to suffer, but we unconsciously think they’re only capable of getting so far”
Even though a child is from a poor village, does that mean he isn’t capable of learning and getting high grades at school? Of course not.
A child is a child is a child.
As long as they receive the same resources and are given an equitable chance at a world-class education... nothing can stop them.
And the folks at Shanti Bhavan have proved this time and time again.
One Shanti Bhavan kid is even going to Princeton 😎.
Oh, the places they can go 📚

🤓 How do you design orthopedic implants and instruments for people in low resourced settings?
It's by listening and working with the surgeons who are experts within the communities they work in. ✨
Dismantle the colonialistic mindset and amazing things can happen 👊🏽
It's as simple as that.

❓ How do you start a nonprofit medical device company without a single engineer?
For SIGN Fracture Care, it wasn't until a few years after they were first founded that they hired their first engineers.
The Founder and President of SIGN, Dr. Lewis Zirkle, wanted a new way of thinking to answer questions like:
👉🏽 How can we design trauma nails and screws without a single shot of x-ray?
👉🏽 How do we incorporate our implants and devices to fit the infrastructure and needs of low resourced areas around the world?
👉🏽 How can we effectively and efficiently train surgeons around the world to use our products?
👉🏽 How can we fight against colonialistic mindsets while serving others?
In today's episode, I speak with Jeanne Dillner, CEO of SIGN Fracture Care, who shares the most valuable lessons she learned from her experience in the medical device industry.
She emphasizes the importance of patient care and the generosity of donors who trust SIGN to use their donations appropriately to help patients in need.
And she also talks about the growth of SIGN over the years, from relying on outside guidance to hiring experienced staff to improve manufacturing and double their production.

"The world is littered with projects driven by high income countries to implement a solution that ultimately cannot be sustained or doesn't fit culturally." - Richard Vanderburg
🌎 Humanitarianism is not a one size fits all solution.
🤷🏽♀️ Digging a well in india isn't the same in kenya isn't the same in haiti...
So before you decide you want to serve, take a moment (or two) to learn about the culture, the community, the infrastructure, even the soil... they are all different.

What does it mean to live in a collectivist society vs an individualistic society?
In collectivist societies, such as those found in South Asia, community and familial ties play a crucial role in shaping individual identities and behaviors.
Mental health concerns are often approached from a communal perspective, where the emphasis is placed on maintaining social harmony and fulfilling societal expectations. Your door is always open for friends, family, and neighbors to pop in and give you company.
But seeking help for mental health issues can be so stigmatized due to the fear of bringing shame or dishonor to one's family.
You'll hear things like ..."What will people say??"... "Keep this within the family... no one should know"
Conversely, individualistic societies like in the US prioritize personal autonomy, self-expression, and independence.
Which is all good and well until you feel like you need help.
In these societies, mental health concerns may be addressed more openly, with a greater emphasis on self-care, personal growth, and seeking professional assistance instead of looking to your family or community for help.
Understanding and navigating these contrasting cultural dynamics is essential for effectively addressing mental health challenges within the South Asian context.
🎙 We cover all of this and more on the latest podcast episode featuring Anjali Badrinath, a clinical mental health counseling graduate student who is passionate about raising awareness around mental health in the south asian community.

Why should a child die of malaria?
👉🏽 According to the WHO, around 6 million cases of malaria are registered in Cameroon. The health facilities record about 4000 deaths per year, most of which occur in children below the age of 5.
During the latest episode, founder of Unite for Health Foundation, Elvis Ndansi tells a story of a women who trekked miles and miles to a clinic to get treatment for her baby who was sick from malaria.
😥 Little did she know, her baby had already passed on the way to the clinic. Elvis took her baby and then gave her the grim news after she had some time to rest.
🌡 This and many other stories like this could just be prevented by a simple solution. Maybe a home thermometer, or a clinic closer to her home within last mile communities.
Please listen into this incredible story. Learn about Elvis's mission, and help him help more mothers in last mile communities.
His work is nothing short of remarkable.

Stories like Elvis's always leaves me in awe.
As a young man in a last mile community in Cameroon , Elvis only dreamt of meeting former president Barack Obama.
But one day, he realized that dreams really can come true when he received notice that he had been chosen as one one of twelve rising leaders around the world to be selected for the inaugural Obama Foundation Scholars program at Columbia University in the City of New York.
💛 This only fueled him to work harder and expand the impact of his organization Unite for Health.
