Only 11% of podcasters make it to episode 50.

And tomorrow, I’ll be part of that 11%.

The journey getting here wasn’t easy. It required support. It required resilience. It required consistency.

Most of all, it required patience.

In 2020, when I first released the Global Health Pursuit Podcast, I made it to episode 37 while simultaneously burning out at work and then finally giving up.

I quit my job at J&J and I quit creating episodes for the podcast.

I couldn’t do it anymore. It was just too overwhelming.

But this time is different.

This time, I’m pouring my heart and soul into the Global Health Pursuit.

And even though I’m juggling the struggles of wedding planning and life, getting to episode 50 hasn’t felt as daunting as it did the first time around.

So this week, in celebration of my 50th episode release and my climb to the top 2% of Global Podcasts, I ask for your support.

Would you be willing to do one or more of these 4 things?

1️⃣ Support the podcast with a financial contribution (As of today, February 26th, 20% of all donations will be directed to the latest featured non-profit OR a featured non-profit of YOUR choice). Your donation will be used towards hosting, production, and marketing costs that help us share more stories of social activists and advocates worldwide.
👉🏾Comment “Donate” or send me a private message for the donation link!

2️⃣ Sponsor a future episode of the podcast! Future episodes in the pipeline are on the topics of clean water, vital signs monitoring for low-resource communities, climate change, ayurveda, mental health, pediatrics, refugees/displaced peoples, and more!
👉🏾 Comment “Sponsor” or send me a private message so we can chat more!

3️⃣ Write an Apple Podcasts review or rate the podcast on Spotify!

What if there was a world where no woman had to experience the harrowing consequences of Obstetric Fistula?

That’s the real question we tackle in today’s episode of the Global Health Pursuit Podcast - “Episode 40. Obstetric Fistula: A Path to Prevention”

The work that Hope for Our Sisters, Inc. is doing when it comes to PREVENTION is incredibly key. If fistula was eradicated, then we wouldn’t have to fund any more surgeries to repair them. It’s as simple as that. 🤷🏾‍♀️

But how do you prevent Fistula from occurring in the first place in countries like DR Congo, Angola, or Nepal?

🎧 Have a listen to the latest episode to find out!

Thank you to Brooke Sulahian and Cara Brooks for sharing your time, love, and compassion with me during this interview.

Today, I'm boycotting Black Friday.

Not JUST because I don't believe in funding genocide.

But because I believe in supporting businesses that are directly uplifting humanity.

We are becoming more and more awakened to how the world works today and I think that we've been buying with blind eyes.

Why is it that when we donate our money to nonprofits, we ask questions like:
✅ What % of my dollar is going to programs?
✅ What projects is my money going towards?
✅ Who am I supporting?
✅ What is the sustainability behind my donation?

But no one asks these questions when buying a sweater from ZARA or a pair of headphones from Amazon?

Clothing and tech companies are ALSO contributing to the livelihood of their employees. But many of us don't seem to care about HOW they are contributing. WHO are they contributing to?

We don't ask questions like:
👉🏾 Are they being paid a living wage?
👉🏾 How many hours are they working each week?
👉🏾 Are they given benefits for themselves and their families?
👉🏾 Are they being treated with respect and care?

"When you say epilepsy, you think, oh that doesn't concern me. Or when you say tumor... well that doesn't concern me. But brain health? It concerns you. It concerns me."

Today, I'm releasing Part 2 of the Eradicating Epilepsy Stigma featuring Teguo Daniel Djoyum: "What Does Coffee Have to Do With Brain Health?"

In this episode we dive into:
👉🏾 Teguo's mission, including his origins in Africa
👉🏾 His experience with the Harvard Innovation Labs
👉🏾 His goals of de-stigmatizing epilepsy and increasing medical resources in underserved areas.
👉🏾 The innovative approach of using a fair profit company to sustainably provide essential care to epilepsy patients.

☕ 🎧 Make sure to listen until the end to learn about an innovative campaign and how you can get involved in raising awareness and funds for epilepsy just through a simple cup of coffee.

Why do we celebrate Diwali?

Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

We light candles in the darkness to pave a path for goodness to prevail.

But as we celebrate, it's important to reflect on the world we live in today.
It's important not to turn a blind eye to the injustices that are happening in populations around the world.

We are finding ourselves living in a time where we see history unfolding right in front of us.

And it's a privilege to witness right at our fingertips.

We see bombing, genocides, divides, and political discourse.

But we also see peaceful protests, unity, and grand gestures of love.

Diwali is a time that reminds us to fight the inequity.

Diwali is a time that reminds us that the light will continue to shine in the dark.

However small the flame 🔥

In some ways, Diwali rebuilds my faith and reminds me that there is humanity in this world when you look closely.

So light those diyas tonight for all who have lost their life.
Light those diyas for those who need a little more hope.

Because a spark in the dark is all you need.

Happy Diwali ✨🪔

I'm having a difficult time processing everything that is going on in Palestine.

I don't know what to say to express how my heart is breaking for the innocent lives lost. I don't want to watch the news, but then again, I can't ignore it.

It's paralyzing.

The only thing I can do is TRY my very hardest to find any type of hope or silver lining in this tragedy.

So this week, I'm re-releasing my favorite episode on the podcast featuring Dr. Wisam Breegi.

From fleeing Baghdad during the Gulf War, to having his first child in the ruins of a half bombed hospital with zero electricity, to now serving less privileged populations to make sure their newborns stay healthy, Dr. Breegi is an innovator that found a light in the darkest of times.

I wanted to remind you that the sun will come up. ☀

I'm experiencing a reverse culture shock...

I spent the last seven days in El Salvador...
With ten other humans from across the states..

The goal was to continue serving communities with little access to pediatric care in El Salvador.

And the last time I've been to central america to serve was in 2019.

All I remember from my journey back was crying on the plane home from Honduras.

My mind and heart were in a duel.

My mind knew that there were people in this world who lived in poverty.
My mind knew that there were people in this world who didn't have access to clean water.
My mind knew that there were people in this world who didn't have access to clean water.
My mind knew that there were people in this world who didn't have a reliable source of electricity.

💔 But my heart never wanted to accept it.

And when I come to a place like El Salvador... where this is the reality for so many, my mind and heart went to war... again.

And I realized that... all I did was win the lottery of life. 💸

I was born into a family who created a life where they could build wealth.
I was born into a family who was able to gain an education that could ripple into the future generations.

I won the lottery. It's as simple as that.

And as I sit on my king sized bed on a freshly washed duvet across from my wide screen television, I ask myself... what is it that's different from 31 year old me and a 31 year old woman living in a rural community in El Salvador, Honduras, or India...

Opportunity. Access. Resources.

But...
We both want to be healthy.
We both want to be loved and love.
We both have dreams.
We both have aspirations.

We are the same... but in so many ways, we are not.

Thank you to Extra Mile Pediatrics and Dr. Jeff, for allowing me to experience the people of El Salvador.

I have so much gratitude for the work you do to care for so many children's health and well being... one child at a time.

This afternoon, I landed in El Salvador with Extra Mile Pediatrics ✨

The last time I traveled abroad to serve was 4 years ago...
And the one thing I remembered was feeling such opposing feelings.

So inspired... but also incredibly helpless.

I thought to myself.. "This past week in Honduras was unbelievable... the families, the organization, my new friends...but now, I have to go back to working my regular job now?!?" 😫

But how? Why?

I had a hard time coming to terms with living 2 completely different lives in just a span of 2 weeks. It didn't seem fair..

I came home and just wanted more...
I wanted to learn more, I wanted to get more involved, but I didn't know how...

That is until I had an idea for a podcast.

It was incredibly simple.

The Mission ➡ Get to know people who are doing incredible work and amplify their missions... Whether they are the founders of global health organizations, professors doing life changing research, or just individuals who are passionate about anything in the realm of global health. Share these conversations and attract others to join in.

That was it. That's how Global Health Pursuit Podcast was born. 🤷🏾‍♀️

So today, I release an incredibly timely episode featuring Jeff Mapp MD, MBA, and the work he does to create more access to pediatric care in 5 communities in El Salvador.

🛫 Read this post before you decide to go on your first service trip 👇🏽

In 2016, I decided to go on my first ever service trip to the slum schools of Faridabad, India.

I was a masters student at the time and winter break was coming up and all I wanted to do was travel but travel.. but travel with a purpose.

And I thought to myself... why not go to India and volunteer in the country of my ancestors?!

So I quickly googled "How to volunteer in India" and an organization named International Volunteer Headquarters popped up.

I filled out a quick application, and I was in.

What I didn't realize was how many red flags I had missed along the way:

🚩 The application to volunteer did not ask me for any teaching qualifications or experience... Was I qualified to teach in a school? I'd say probably not. I knew some hindi, but many of the volunteers only spoke english and could not communicate with the students. How do you teach math or english when you cannot properly communicate with your students? You can't. Instead, I saw most volunteers (including myself) ending up just playing with the students instead of helping them to learn.
🤔 Ask yourself this: What kind of program are you signing up for? Does the organization ask you for qualifications? What goals have they achieved and what would be your specific role within volunteering? If these answers are not clear to you, think twice about volunteering with this organization.

🚩 The organization markets itself with excursions and tourism during the volunteer trip...pushing the notion of voluntourism. I had never heard of the term voluntourism until a few years after my trip and I connected the dots.
🤔 Ask yourself this: What is your main goal for this trip? Is it to take see a new country and sight see? Or is it to volunteer and uplift a community? There is absolutely no judgement if you want to travel and sightsee. You might just want to take a vacation if that's the case! Don't mask a vacation by saying you are volunteering.

✨ It's been a while since I've shared my story 👇🏽

So hi 💛

🙋🏽‍♀️My name is Hetal and I'm the daughter of hardworking and loving Indian immigrants.

🚗I lived my life on autopilot🚗

I did well in school ➡️ I got a prestigious job ➡️ I began climbing that corporate ladder

And then the following happened:
❌ Burnout
❌ Toxic work environment
❌ Gaslighting
❌ Job hopping

And this is what I realized:
✅ I've been letting others dictate my life for years and years
✅ That the corporate environment isn't for me
✅ I want to serve more than the top 15% of the world
✅ I want to connect with people who want to serve more than the top 15% of the world.

So at the end of 2021, I quit. 🙏🏽

🤷🏽‍♀️With no back up plan.

I quit my well paying engineering job at Johnson & Johnson.

And after a much needed recovery and self discovery, I've reinvented myself to get closer to who I am at the core.

👇🏼So I launched a podcast👇🏼

"It makes it a Ferrari that can drive in the desert" 🏎️🏎️ 🏜️

This is how Dr. Wisam Breegi described the NICI - the world's first portable, digital-native and low-cost infant incubator platform with a disposable housing.

But why was creating this product so important to him and the team at Breegi Scientific, Inc. ?

Today I share a snippet of an episode I released on the launch day of the podcast.

The most downloaded episode to date (might i add 😏)

It's a segment where I ask him why this was so important.

What was the story behind it all?

Because sometimes just one event can change the trajectory of your life forever.

"They never said yes, but they never said no" 😒

🎙 This is what Dr. Lewis Zirkle, Founder and President of SIGN Fracture Care, told me during our interview on the Global Health Pursuit Podcast.

Who are the "they" he speaks of?

Orthopedic medical device companies.

He went to several medical device companies after serving in the Vietnam War as a commanding officer/surgeon to ask if they could help create medical devices and instrumentation that would serve the poor in low and middle income countries.

And they'd never say yes... but they'd never said no...

So Dr. Zirkle put matters into his own hands, and created his own medical device company.

😲 Ambitious right??

A nonprofit medical device company called SIGN Fracture Care that designs and manufactures implants/instrumentation while also providing education to local surgeons in developing countries.

SIGN focuses on the lack of orthopedic care in low and middle-income countries, particularly in the context of traumatic accidents and fractures.

In the latest episode, Dr. Zirkle shares his experiences as a surgeon in Vietnam, the challenges of designing and manufacturing implants for use in low-resource settings, and the impact that untreated fractures can have on poor families and communities around the world.

What is Global Health?

This past Tuesday (I know I'm late 😫), I released a super short solo episode talking about global health and I defined it in my own way :)

I introduce the topic of global health and provide different definitions. I challenge listeners to think about global health beyond just healthcare and consider the various factors that contribute to it, such as culture, environment, education, and mental health. This episode serves as an introduction to the podcast and its focus on exploring global health issues from a beginner's perspective. I highlight some of the amazing guests I have had on the podcast who are working to improve global health.

Who are you at the core?

🙋🏽‍♀️ If you ask me?... I am an emotional being who craves connection and loves stories. I am someone who wants to uplift others by spreading knowledge and awareness of important issues. I am someone who loves exploring new lands.

I've stopped defining myself by my title, rank, or status... because none of that matters in the process.

❓ Will anyone care that I have a bachelors and masters in Biomedical Engineering while I'm on my deathbed? Will I care???

❌ The answer is no.

In my latest episode with World Pediatric Project, Vafa Akhavan shares his journey of going from a career in filmmaking to the children's nonprofit healthcare space.

What I learned from him is... when you stop confining yourself with the definitions of title, rank, or status... the most amazing and different opportunities begin flowing to you.

Have you ever wondered how reliable health statistics are in the most rural parts of the world?

📈 Journal articles discuss how hundreds of thousands of women are diagnosed with and dying from cervical cancer, but just how accurate are these statistics?

In the latest episode of the Global Health Pursuit Podcast, Marissa Fayer and I chat about women's health in low and middle income countries, specifically cervical cancer statistics and the important work she does in the medtech and philanthropy sectors.

We talk about Marissa's background and how HERhealthEQ was founded (in a bar! 🍷 ). HerHealthEQ is a nonprofit that aims to improve women's health outcomes by providing medical equipment to developing regions around the world.

She explains how HerHealthEQ carefully selects their partners and distributes medical equipment to regions in need while emphasizing the importance of providing not just equipment but also service contracts, training, and installation.

She says..."We're not just dumping equipment somewhere and saying, good luck bye-bye!"

So, as HerHealthEQ grows and continues to serve women and girls worldwide, we realize just how important partnerships are in creating impact at scale.

After all, WHO RUN THE WORLD???? ( 😅 I had to)

Can you imagine changing your career from bartender to humanitarian? 🍷 ➡ 🚰

I'd say that's a pretty big move!

In the latest episode of the podcast, I had the pleasure of interviewing Richard Vanderburg, Chief Program Officer of Wine To Water, a non-profit organization that provides clean water to communities in need around the world.

First of all.... aren't ya'll curious about why this organization is named 'Wine to Water'?

I was and there's a super interesting backstory to that! Of course that's the first question I ask Richard on the podcast.

We discussed the challenges and strategies involved in disaster relief programs and he emphasized the importance of involving the local community in their projects.

Wine to Water also runs an awesome volunteer program as well... so if you're looking for your next service opportunity, look no further!

Don't miss it!

What does it mean to live in a collectivist society vs an individualistic society?

In collectivist societies, such as those found in South Asia, community and familial ties play a crucial role in shaping individual identities and behaviors.

Mental health concerns are often approached from a communal perspective, where the emphasis is placed on maintaining social harmony and fulfilling societal expectations. Your door is always open for friends, family, and neighbors to pop in and give you company.

But seeking help for mental health issues can be so stigmatized due to the fear of bringing shame or dishonor to one's family.

You'll hear things like ..."What will people say??"... "Keep this within the family... no one should know"

Conversely, individualistic societies like in the US prioritize personal autonomy, self-expression, and independence.

Which is all good and well until you feel like you need help.

In these societies, mental health concerns may be addressed more openly, with a greater emphasis on self-care, personal growth, and seeking professional assistance instead of looking to your family or community for help.

Understanding and navigating these contrasting cultural dynamics is essential for effectively addressing mental health challenges within the South Asian context.

🎙 We cover all of this and more on the latest podcast episode featuring Anjali Badrinath, a clinical mental health counseling graduate student who is passionate about raising awareness around mental health in the south asian community.

😳 Do your immigrant parents think therapy is a scam???

In this episode, I interview Anjali Badrinath, a South Asian mental health counselor, about intergenerational trauma and mental health struggles within the South Asian community.

She shares her personal story and experiences as a South Asian pursuing a career in mental health counseling. The conversation touches on the collectivist framework and the stigma surrounding mental health conditions within the community.

Anjali believes that the stigma is slowly being broken down through sources like social media, films, TV, and the growing number of therapists like herself who are passionate about serving the South Asian population.

The conversation highlights the importance of breaking down cultural barriers and seeking professional help when dealing with intergenerational trauma and mental health struggles.

This conversation was really important to me and completely validated my thoughts and feelings around how mental health is seen in the South Asian community.

Why should a child die of malaria?

👉🏽 According to the WHO, around 6 million cases of malaria are registered in Cameroon. The health facilities record about 4000 deaths per year, most of which occur in children below the age of 5.

During the latest episode, founder of Unite for Health Foundation, Elvis Ndansi tells a story of a women who trekked miles and miles to a clinic to get treatment for her baby who was sick from malaria.

😥 Little did she know, her baby had already passed on the way to the clinic. Elvis took her baby and then gave her the grim news after she had some time to rest.

🌡 This and many other stories like this could just be prevented by a simple solution. Maybe a home thermometer, or a clinic closer to her home within last mile communities.

Please listen into this incredible story. Learn about Elvis's mission, and help him help more mothers in last mile communities.

His work is nothing short of remarkable.

"When you go to a country and you end in the capital city, don't write your report yet about the country. When you even go to the suburban community, don't end your report there. You need to go to those last mile communities to appreciate and have a complete picture of what lives looks like {in the country}."

One community is not the same as every other community in a country. But regardless, biases and stigmas are formed.

Next time you travel... remember, what you see may not be the whole truth.

Thank you Elvis for sharing this perspective with me.

Stories like Elvis's always leaves me in awe.

As a young man in a last mile community in Cameroon , Elvis only dreamt of meeting former president Barack Obama.

But one day, he realized that dreams really can come true when he received notice that he had been chosen as one one of twelve rising leaders around the world to be selected for the inaugural Obama Foundation Scholars program at Columbia University in the City of New York.

💛 This only fueled him to work harder and expand the impact of his organization Unite for Health.
