If you know a little about mathematics, you may have heard about the difference between necessary and sufficient conditions. Now, what's that got to do with anything? Bear with me.
Take musical success. Mind you, I am not talking about "look how many followers follow me back". And most certainly I am not talking about "look at the Hot 40 playlist that included my song because it sounds exactly like any other song on that list".
I am talking about music people connect with, music that touches people in one way or another so they become true fans. This is successful music in my book. And besides, this kind of music will find a way to spread, too, beyond the algorithms of the dehumanised "radio of modern times".
Now back to maths: what does it take?
A great song is a necessary condition, of course. But is it sufficient? I believe the best possible production quality is needed as well - today more than ever; but at all times, the most successful musicians, engineers and producers strived for outstanding quality. Only the technical capabilities have changed over the decades. (Sometimes I even seem to detect an inversely proportional relationship between the progression of technical and musical quality, but that's a story for another day.)
Interestingly enough, the opposite is true as well. You might say, production quality is a necessary condition for success. But quite contrary to common perception, I am a firm believer it is not sufficient.
In other words, it takes both - do the math!
If you have written and recorded a great song and wonder about the other part of the equation, visit me at HawkbitStudios.com and we'll talk about your music and how I can help you with production quality!
