Mike’s World of Sports – Monday Night January 16th Edition:

How bout dem Cowboys! Dallas easily took care of Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 despite Cowboys kicker Brett Mahar’s best efforts to make tomorrow mornings originally scheduled tee time. 4 missed extra points by Mahar. For his sake at least he made the 5th. As for Tom Brady the offseason question will be whether or not he will be back next season or retire. Brady and his bunch of Bucs were more like Greg Brady with the orange hair for graduation in the final episode. Notably missing from the finale was the Dad Mike Brady. At least the Brady Buch redeemed themselves with the best Christmas movie of all time in A Very Brady Christmas years later, but what will Brady and his bunch do to redeem themselves will be an off season question.

The one time the whole country was rooting for Tom Brady to win a playoff game since maybe his rookie year he blew it. Now we get to hear Dallas Cowboys fans for another week until they face the San Francisco 49ers. Dallas vs. San Francisco next Sunday in a rematch of last years playoff tilt where Dallas simply ran out of time. Will Dallas run out of time next Sunday and Dallas fans have to rewatch their 90’s Super Bowl victory VHS tape that’s tape is starting to run thin? One more rewind and Dallas fans will really be in trouble.

3 of the 4 teams remaining in the NFC are all from the NFC East. If only Washington stuck with Taylor Heinicke instead of Carson Wentz versus Cleveland? Who knows maybe the REDSKINS would have commanded their way to an upset victory over the 49ers resulting in an all NFC Divisional Round….

Next weekend will be wild with Jacksonville vs. Kansas City, N.Y. Giants vs. Philadelphia, Cincinnati vs. Buffalo, and Dallas vs. San Francisco.

The Washington Capitals came from 3-0 down to defeat the New York Islanders 4-3 in overtime behind Dmitry Orlov’s OT winner. The Boston Bruins all over the Philadelphia Flyers 6-0. The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 in OT, and the Colorado Avalanche doubled up the Detroit Red Wings 6-3 in some of Monday’s NHL contests.

The Washington Capitals will host the Minnesota Wild, the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs get together, and Seattle will hope to unleash the Kraken on the road versus the Edmonton Oilers in some of Tuesday night’s slate.

The Memphis Grizzlies all over the struggling Phoenix Suns 136-106. The Golden State Warriors dominate at home, but the road not so much… were able to defeat the Washington Wizards on the road 127-118, and the Toronto Raptors over the New York Knicks 123-121 in OT.
Tuesday night in the Association will have the Toronto Raptors tipping off with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Brooklyn Nets and the San Antonio Spurs will get together. The Portland Trail Blazers will face the Denver Nuggets, and the Philadelphia 76ers will take on the Los Angeles Clippers.

Top 25 Men’s College Basketball from Monday had #3 Purdue coming away with a 64-63 victory over Michigan State. #17 Miami (FL) 82-78 over Syracuse, and #18 College of Charleston all over William & Mary 82-54. Mike’s World of Sports for Thursday January 5th

Best news of the day is Buffalo Bills cornerback Damar Hamlin is awake, and even asked who won the Bills-Bengals game. Doctors assured him that he won, but in his case, it was the game of life.

Cardiac arrest does not happen to typically healthy 24 year old’s, and the type of tackle that Hamlin had on Tee Higgins was not one that would warrant CPR.

One would have to think if the Covid vaccine mandate that the university of Pitt had, or the mandate the NFL had in place in regards to the vaccine had anything to do with Hamlin nearly losing his life.

A lot of coincidences recently in the sporting world. Not saying the vax is to blame for what happened to Damar Hamlin, but also remember, the difference between a conspiracy theory and the truth is about 6 months.

We are lucky this hasn’t happened more often in football like it has in soccer world wide, and thank God that Damar Hamlin is still with us.

As far as the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, that game has now been outright canceled and will not be made up. A shame with all the scenarios associated with the result of that game.

Heck one scenario, was to eliminate the bye week and have 8 teams in the playoff. Too much of a Jeff Gordon NASCAR chase situation which would not go over to well.

But then again if they add an 8th to the NFC, Washington would simply need to beat Dallas and have Seattle lose to the Los Angeles Rams…

Imagine all the Fantasy Football Championships impacted the complete cancelation? Lots of money and pride lost for teams that had Joe Burrow or Josh Allen starting only to lose due to a technicality…

In other sports news, the Washington Commanders (REDSKINS) will start rookie QB Sam Howell vs. Dallas. Imagine if Washington had played Taylor Heinicke last week vs. Cleveland instead of Carson Wentz? Wouldn’t have mattered anyway, because Head Coach Ron Rivera didn’t know that the Commies would be eliminated if Green Bay would win, which they did…

Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman has transferred to Notre Dame for his final season. Michigan and Jim Harbaugh in hot water for alleged violations during the Covid-19 recruiting dead period. Now it makes sense as to why Harbaugh is looking at NFL jobs potentially with Carolina or Denver?

Vince McMahon back in charge of WWE. has fired Chris Beard following a domestic family violence charge.

NHL wise from Wednesday had Alex Ovechkin getting goal #809 as the Washington Capitals strong 2nd period helped bury the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-2. In other action the St. Louis Blues 5-3 over the New Jersey Devils, and Seattle released the Kraken all over the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1. On Friday, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals hosts the Nashville Predators, and the Florida Panthers in a must win matchup with the Detroit Red Wings.

In the NBA it was the Boston Celtics all over the Dallas Mavericks 124-95, and the Utah Jazz 131-114 over the Houston Rockets. Friday the Brooklyn Nets take on the New Orleans Pelicans, the Washington Wizards travel to Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder, and the Miami Heat tip off with the Phoenix Suns.

#1 Purdue bounces back with a 71-69 victory over #24 Ohio State. #2 Houston all over SMU 87-53, Iowa upsets #15 Indiana 91-89, and #10 UCLA survived a scare from USC 60-58. Friday action is highlighted by Akron facing Ball State, and Stanford takes on California in a battle of underachieving PAC-12 teams.

In women’s college basketball it was #9 Virginia Tech over Virginia 74-66, #18 Duke 60-50 over Wake Forest, and #1 South Carolina all over Auburn 94-42. Friday women’s top 25 action is all in the PAC-12 with #18 Oregon facing Arizona State, #8 Utah vs. Colorado, and Oregon State battles with #15 Arizona.

Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 on Thursday. Chelsea is now in an uncharacteristic 10th on the English Premier League table. On Friday Manchester United will take on Everton.

Spaniard Jon Rahm, and Americans Collin Morikawa and JJ. Spaun all tied for the lead at -9 following shooting 64 in round 1 of the PGA Tour Sentry Tournament of Champions from Kapalua Resort in Kapalua, HI.

Happy Friday January the 6th
