Understanding the Israel-Palestine conflict !

Unexpectedly, the conflict between Israel and Palestine escalated to unforeseen levels on October 7 when Hamas, a Palestinian militant group that controls the densely populated Gaza Strip along Israelโ€™s border, launched an unprecedented attack on Israel from Gaza. This attack resulted in the tragic death of at least 700 Israelis, and the death toll could rise further according to reports. Israeli forces are currently engaged in battles with militants who are holed up in several locations.

In response to this attack, Israel initiated retaliatory bombardments of the Gaza Strip. It declared war against Hamas and vowed to destroy the โ€œmilitary and governing capabilitiesโ€ of the enclaveโ€™s Hamas rulers. Unfortunately, these retaliatory actions have claimed the lives of more than 400 Palestinians. Israeli soldiers have been fighting to dislodge Gaza gunmen from areas in southern Israel, and Palestinian militant groups have claimed to be holding over 130 captives from the Israeli side.

After days of fighting, Ukrainian forces have regained control of Makariv, a town 30 miles west of Kyiv, the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a post on Facebook on Tuesday.

The โ€œstate flag of Ukraine was raised over the city of Makarivโ€ as the Russians retreated, the post said.

With Vladimir Putinโ€™s invasion of Ukraine having officially begun on February 24, the worldโ€™s rightful condemnation has put Russia into a difficult position domestically, and with military struggles halting Russiaโ€™s progress to Kyiv, Putin has laid out six conditions that would end the war.

Ukrainian government officials do not believe Putin is being realistic in his demands, whilst visits of the leaders of Poland, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic have done little to speed up the peace process.

According to the newspaper ABC, Putinโ€™s conditions for peace are as follows:

1. Ukraine doesnโ€™t enter NATO and maintains a position of neutrality

2. Crimea is recognized as a territory of Russia

3. The independence is granted to the peopleโ€™s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk

4. Ukraine demilitarizes and surrenders any weapons which constitute a threat to Russia

5. Ukraine goes through a process of denazification, which would essentially constitute a change of government based on Putinโ€™s previous words about the Ukrainian leadership.

6. Russian becomes the second official language of Ukraine and any laws which prohibit its use are repealed

Lt. Gen. Andrey Mordvichev killed in Chornobaivka township near Kherson city, says military

Ukraine claimed on Saturday that another senior Russian military officer was killed, the fifth since the war began last month.

Lt. Gen. Andrey Mordvichev, a commander of the 8th Rus. Army of the South region, was eliminated in Chornobaivka township near Kherson city, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a statement.

At least 816 civilians have been killed and 1,333 injured in Ukraine since the beginning of the war on Feb. 24, according to UN estimates. More than 3.27 million people have also fled to neighboring countries.

Claims on military casualties of both sides, however, have not been independently verified.

Russian President Vladimir Putin justified the invasion of Ukraine at a rally in Moscow on Friday, where his speech was abruptly cut off on the state TV broadcast in what the Kremlin described as a technical error.

Tens of thousands of people waved the Russian flag at the national stadium as they took part in celebrations commemorating the eighth year of Russia's annexation of Crimea -- which is deemed illegal by the Ukrainian government and not recognized in the West.

Speaking from a stage in front of a banner that read, "For a world without Na**sm," Putin said Russia "will definitely implement all our plans" in Ukraine.

"To spare people from this suffering, from this genocide -- this is the main reason, motive and purpose of the military operation that we launched in the Donbas [an eastern Ukrainian region] and Ukraine," he said.

The Russian military is quite literally digging in, constructing earthen berms around its military equipment northwest of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, according to Maxar Technologies' analysis and satellite images.

The new satellite images show the protective berms around Russian military equipment near Ozera and the Antonov Air Base.

Additional Russian military equipment, and some berm construction, are also seen in the villages of Zdvyzhivka and Berestyanka, further northwest.

New satellite images are helping to shed light on the areas impacted by military strikes across Ukraine.

Just 24 miles northwest of central Kyiv, the satellite images show that nearly every single house in the northwestern side of the village of Moschun has sustained significant damage.

Fires are still burning in some of the houses while the fields surrounding the village are also scorched.

The photos, taken on Monday, also show damage across Mariupol. The satellite images are offering the only look at the latest destruction in the city.

Ukraine on Wednesday said the Russian armed forces are preparing to seize the capital Kyiv.

"According to available information, the enemy is preparing for a new attempt to take Kyiv," the press service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a statement.

Kyiv, Ukraineโ€™s most populous city, is said to be relatively quiet in recent days, though Russian artillery has pounded the outskirts of the capital.

Earlier this week, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko had urged the public to stay indoors or in shelters as the city steps up the defensive measures, adding that intense fights were ongoing outside Kyiv.

"The Kyiv municipality does everything to ensure reliable city services," he said. "We distribute the aid among the most vulnerable population and stockpile food, essentials and medications."

โ€œAmong them 93% are Ukrainian, 1% are Polish and 6% are from 100 other different countries,โ€ the post read.

On Tuesday alone, some 125,800 people crossed into Poland according to the agency.

US President Joe Bidenโ€™s ban on Russian energy imports is latest move to punish Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

United States President Joe Biden has imposed an immediate ban on Russian oil and other energy imports in retaliation for Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine, while the United Kingdom said it would phase out imports by the end of 2022.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted a video on his official Instagram account on Friday, saying he is still in the capital Kyiv and has not fled the country.

"Every two days information comes out that I have fled somewhere โ€” fled from Ukraine, from Kyiv, from my office. As you can see, I am here in my place, Andriy Borisovich (Yermak) is here. Nobody has fled anywhere. Here, we are working," Zelensky said.

"We like jogging, but now we don't have time for that, for various cardio exercises," he joked. "Working. Glory to Ukraine."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on the international community to normalize relations with his country, while claiming it could benefit from sanctions.

โ€œWe have no bad intentions, there is no need to escalate the situation, impose restrictions, we fulfil all obligations,โ€ Putin said during a flag raising ceremony of a new Russian ferry, a joint venture between Russia and Turkey.

โ€œIf someone does not want to cooperate with us within the framework of single cooperation, and by doing so harms themselves, they will, of course, harm us too," Putin added.

Putin went on to say the Russian economy would have adapt to the current situation.

โ€œWe will just have to move some projects a little to the right, to acquire additional competencies. But we will still solve the problems that we faceโ€ he said. โ€œIn the end, we will even benefit from this because we will acquire additional competencies.โ€

European Council president: No-fly zone over Ukraine is "one step too far"

European Council President Charles Michel said on Thursday that enforcing a no-fly zone over Ukraine is a NATO decision, but that it would be โ€œone step too farโ€ with a โ€œreal risk of escalation and a real risk of a possible third international war.โ€

โ€œThe EU is not at war with Russia. The reality is that Russia has launched a savage war against Ukraine. Ukraine is not a NATO member, and thatโ€™s why we must be extremely careful and cautious. We need to do everything which is possible, but taking into account that Russia has nuclear weapons, and it is very important to avoid a third international war,โ€

Michel said that while this was a decision for NATO to make and not the EU, it is important for NATO members to understand that it would be โ€œone step too far."

โ€œThatโ€™s why we are trying to advocate in different fields at the diplomatic level. We are trying to provide more support to Ukraine in order to have a ceasefire as soon as possible, and in order to make sure that weโ€™ll be able to negotiate as soon as possible,โ€ he added.

Russia says it agreed on humanitarian corridors with Ukraine during talks

The second round of talks between a delegation from Russia and Ukraine in Belarus have ended, the head of Russian delegation Vladimir Medinsky told Russian media, and the two sides have agreed on humanitarian corridors for civilians.

โ€œWe have thoroughly discussed three points โ€“ military, international and humanitarian, and the third one is an issue of a future political regulation of the conflict. Both positions are clear and written down. We managed to agree on some of them, but the key thing that we have reached an agreement on today was a matter of rescuing civilians who found themselves in a military clash zone. Russian and Ukrainian defense ministries agreed on providing humanitarian corridors for civilians and on a possible temporary ceasefire in areas where evacuation is happening,โ€ Medinsky told media.

The talks lasted for two-and-a-half hours.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian negotiator on Thursday said that the talks didnโ€™t deliver any results that Ukraine needed, but he said there is a "solution only for the organization of humanitarian corridors."

"The second round of negotiations is over. Unfortunately, the results Ukraine needs are not yet achieved. There is a solution only for the organization of humanitarian corridors," senior Ukrainian official Mykhailo Podolyak said in a tweet.

Another member of the Russian delegation, Leonid Slutsky, told Russia 24 that both sides have agreed on the third round of talks, which will happen in the โ€œnearest future.โ€

Russian and Belarusian athletes banned from Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said Thursday it was banning Russian and Belarusian athletes from the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, which begin on Friday.

โ€œAt the IPC we are very firm believers that sport and politics should not mix. However, by no fault of its own the war has now come to these Games and behind the scenes many Governments are having an influence on our cherished event," IPC President Andrew Parsons said in a statement.

It was also a matter of safety and security, with the situation in the athletes' village becoming "untenable" as tensions escalate, he said.

He said Paralympic committees from multiple countries had threatened not to compete, and that if Russian and Belarusian athletes were allowed to take part, "nations will likely withdraw" and "we will likely not have a viable Games."

The decision comes less than a day after the IPC initially permitted athletes from both countries to compete as neutrals under the Paralympic flag and the Paralympic anthem. It will affect 83 athletes from the two countries, Parsons said.

Oil hits $113 as Russia fears mount !

The relentless rally in oil prices hit new milestones on Wednesday as Brent soared beyond $113 a barrel for the first time in nearly eight years on deepening concerns about Russiaโ€™s oil supply.

Brent, the world benchmark, jumped 5.4% in recent trading to $110.20 a barrel. At one point it hit $113.02 -- up nearly 8% on the day and the highest intraday level since June 2014.

US crude jumped another 4% Wednesday morning to $107.42 a barrel. US crude, also known as West Texas Intermediate (WTI), spiked as much as 7.8% to $111.50 a barrel โ€“ the highest level since August 2013.

The rally reflects worries that the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and ensuing sanctions on the Kremlin, will disrupt Russiaโ€™s oil supply. The new milestones come less than a day after the International Energy Agency and the White House announced the release of 60 million barrels of emergency oil supplies.
