“From the beginning, our podcast has focused on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), a cause that is deeply personal to us. Two of us have lived through the trauma of domestic violence, and that pain has driven our passion to fight for the women who have been silenced.

But as we’ve shared stories and listened to the voices of our community, we’ve come to realize that this crisis isn’t just about women. Indigenous men, too, are disappearing and being murdered at an alarming rate. This realization has weighed heavily on us, and we knew we had to do more-to speak out for all our people.

That’s why we’re expanding our focus and changing our name to “We Are Resilient: An MMIP True Crime Podcast.” We’re still the same advocates, driven by the same passion, but now with a broader mission to include all Indigenous people who are missing or murdered.

This change is about acknowledging the full scope of the tragedy that affects our communities and continuing to push for justice, not just for our women, but for all our loved ones.”

According to the National Inquiry in Canada, Indigenous women are 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than any other women in Canada, and 16 times more likely than Caucasian women.

This statistic is especially terrifying when in 2022, serial killer Jeremy Skibicki, was captured after targeting Indigenous women in Winnipeg.

05/05/2024

Today, we commemorate the National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives, it’s important to realize the magnitude of this issue. While our podcast primarily focuses on raising awareness regarding Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) cases, we recognize that these issues do not only affect women and girls. The MMIP crisis is a national epidemic that can affect any indigenous person.

The history of violence against indigenous people is the result of a legacy of generations of government policies of forced removal, land seizures, and violence inflicted on native people and unfortunately, this violence still exists today.

The statistics surrounding violence against Indigenous women are not just numbers; they represent the lived experiences of our sisters, daughters, and mothers. According to the National Institute of Justice, a staggering 4 out of 5 Indigenous women have endured violence in their lifetime. As I look out at the strong, resilient Indigenous women gathered here today, I’m reminded of the profound impact this crisis has on our communities. It’s truly heartbreaking.

On the Qualla Boundary, we are fortunate to have a community that has rallied together to address and combat these injustices. However, keeping this momentum requires our collective commitment. By engaging in open dialogue about the challenges facing our people, we can ensure that these issues remain at the forefront.

At We Are Resilient, we are dedicated to shedding light on the issues plaguing Native communities and amplifying the voices of those who have been silenced. We will continue to share the stories of our missing and murdered sisters, demanding justice for each and every one of them.

We urge each of you to join us in this fight by honoring the names of our missing and murdered relatives. Together, as Native people, we can help incite change.
