PTI chief Imran Khan, Senator Faisal Javed and several other party leaders were among those wounded in gunfire on the long march container at Wazirabad’s Allah Wala Chowk on Thursday.

The attack, characterised by the PTI as “targeted”, has triggered widespread condemnation from across the political divide.

There were also reports of the death of a party worker who was in the city to welcome the caravan, which was there for the party’s second iteration of its “Azadi” march. The assailant was reportedly subdued.

Senator Javed, who was also wounded and had blood stains on his clothes, told Geo News from the hospital: “Several of our colleagues are wounded. We heard that one of them is dead.”

According to PTI’s Imran Ismail, the party chief reportedly “received three to four bullets in his leg” while Javed was grazed by a bullet, according to Hammad Azhar.

“It was a clear assassination attempt. Khan was hit but he’s stable. There was a lot of bleeding,” Fawad Chaudhry told Reuters. “If the shooter had not been stopped by people there, the entire PTI leadership would have been wiped out.”

Azhar also said that PTI workers Omer Meyer and Rashid also received a gunshot each.

Local PTI members Ahmed Chattha and Chaudhry Yousuf were also injured.

Following the incident, Imran Khan was immediately shifted to a vehicle and evacuated to a hospital — in Lahore, according to Reuters — while other injured people were taken by ambulances to the nearby Wazirabad Institute of Cardiology.

According to rescue officials and PTI, ten people were injured due to the firing, including the PTI officials. Reports also said that one child was included in the injured people.

Footage on television showed an injured Imran Khan waving to supporters after reportedly being shot and then being carried to his bulletproof pickup truck.

In separate footage broadcast on television, one alleged assailant could be seen being subdued by party supporters and subsequent photos showed him being taken away but what looked like policemen

He followed up a 22-ball 52 with two crucial wickets as Pakistan came back from behind to down South Africa in a rain-hit contest.

Pakistan 185 for 9 (Shadab 52, Iftikhar 51, Nortje 4-41) beat South Africa 108 for 9 in 14 overs (Bavuma 36, Afridi 3-14, Shadab 2-16) by 33 runs (DLS method)

Pakistan have kept their semi-final hopes alive with victory in a rain-reduced, must-win match over their favourite opponents: South Africa. They've met four times at T20 World Cups and Pakistan have won all four encounters. With this latest result, there are now no unbeaten teams left at this World Cup.

On a chilly Sydney evening, against the express pace of Anrich Nortje and the craftiness of Lungi Ngidi's slower ball, Pakistan recovered from 95 for 5 to post their fifth-highest score against South Africa, and highest at World Cups. While their top order failed to fire once again, Iftikhar Ahmed and then Shadab Khan scored half-centuries to get Pakistan to a competitive score. They were helped by a sloppy South African fielding performance. They dropped five catches - more than they have in the other three matches in the tournament combined - and there were several fumbles on a slippery outfield.

Pakistan were set up with the bat, but won the match with the ball. Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed Quinton de K**k and Rilee Rossouw cheaply but Temba Bavuma played his best innings of 2022 and the chase was going well until the start of the eighth over. South Africa were 65 for 2, ahead of the DLS par of 58 at the time, when Shadab found Bavuma's edge. At the fall of the wicket, the DLS par went up to 66 and it increased to 77 two balls later when Aiden Markam was dismissed. By the time play was interrupted after nine overs, South Africa needed to be on 85 to win, but were 69 for 4.

Trent Boult claims career-best figures to leave New Zealand well placed to top Group 1.

New Zealand 167 for 7 (Phillips 104, Rajitha 2-23) beat Sri Lanka 102 (Shanaka 35, Boult 4-13) by 65 runs

Sri Lanka had New Zealand 15 for 3 in the powerplay. But then they dropped Glenn Phillips, and it was all new Zealand from there. Phillips bashed 104 off 64 deliveries to almost single-handedly carry New Zealand to 167 for 7 (the next-highest score in the team was 22), before Trent Boult and Tim Southee put on a powerplay showcase, taking four wickets between them while the fielding restrictions were still on in Sri Lanka's chase.

Where New Zealand kept enough resources in store for a late-overs explosion, hitting 113 off the last 10, Sri Lanka squandered their batters before any sort of base could be established. They had crashed to 58 for 6 after 10 overs, and had no hope at all from there, eventually being bowled out for 102 as Boult finished with career-best figures of 4 for 13 and Southee claimed 1 for 12.

This result took New Zealand to the top of the Group 1 table, with five points and an outstanding net run rate of 3.85. It sent Sri Lanka down to near the bottom of the table, with two points after three matches, and a poor NRR of -0.89. This means New Zealand are in an excellent place to not only qualify for the semi finals but also finish top of their group. Sri Lanka, however, will find a semi-finals spot incredibly difficult to seize from here.

Phillips gets dropped
We're not out to make Phillips' century seem unearned, because of course it was. But had Pathum Nissanka held a sitter off Phillips in the seventh over, off the bowling of Wanindu Hasaranga, Phillips would have been out for 12 off 15, and New Zealand would have been 29 for 4. Phillips was also dropped for 45 off the 38th ball he faced - Dasun Shanaka unable to hold on to a tough chance running in from long off.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday terminated the basic party membership of Faisal Vawda, days after a contentious press conference that was disowned by the party leadership.

The Wednesday press conference, in which he said the party’s march to Islamabad would be “bloody”, was panned by the party leadership and spurred the issuance of a show-cause notice.

The termination, a letter of which was tweeted by PTI’s official Twitter account today, comes after Vawda failed to “respond to the notice within the stipulated timeline” — that was given to him to clarify his stance.

Vawda has yet to publicly comment on the matter.

He was issued a show-cause notice and his party membership was suspended after his press conference — held that same day — was loaded with claims that were deemed to be “against party policies and guidelines”.

In his media talk, he claimed that the establishment had “no role in his [Arshad Sharif’s] killing” and that Sharif had no threats while staying in Pakistan.

He had also stated that PTI’s long march will be a “bloody” one with “deaths and funerals” of innocent people due to a “conspiracy”.

His allegations were met with great disapproval from PTI leaders, including PTI Sindh President Ali Haider Zaidi who tweeted that “Vawda tried to damage our long march”.

PTI leader Asad Umar had also declared in a tweet that Vawda’s “statement does not represent party policy and views”.

Yesterday, Vawda had tweeted that he “kept trying to make Khan sahab understand, explained to him and emphasised that two confidants, three snakes and a few maggots are taking his political hard work of 26 years on some other path; that caused the country harm, benefitted the PDM and resulted in confrontation with institutions.”

“We were very close to a compromise. Will reveal their names soon,” he added.

Sindh’s Transport and Mass Transit Minister, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has announced that a Peoples Bus Service smartphone app will be launched on 30 November along with the installation of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in the buses.

In this regard, the Minister presided over a meeting that was also attended by the Project Director of the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), Sohaib Shafiq, and the Managing Director (MD) of Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA), Captain (r) Altaf Hussain Sario.

During the meeting, operations of the bus service, new routes, ITS, and setting up a command and control room (CCR) were also discussed.

At the occasion, Minister said that the app will help citizens in tracking the live location of the buses and will offer them an avenue for online payments, adding that the CCTV cameras, live tracking, and monitoring services will be installed under the ITS system.

As quoted by the News, MD SMTA stated that the app will offer three functions, which include bus routes, timings, and ticket fares. The commuters will be able to pay their fare via the app or a QR code through the online payment feature of the app, which will be launched later in December this year, he added.

He further elaborated that citizens will also be able to activate their Peoples Bus Service cards with the help of the new app.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) immigration officials have arrested three passengers from Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport who were named on the exit control list (ECL), ARY News reported on Friday.

The FIA immigration officials arrested three passengers who were trying to depart for foreign countries from Karachi airport during different actions.

Sources said that all three accused were named on the ECL and they were arrested while fleeing abroad.

A passenger namely Waheed Ali Laghari was allegedly involved in a murder case who was trying to depart for Dubai, said FIA sources.

It was learnt that Waheed Ali Laghari was wanted in a murder case in Dadu and he was trying to flee Dubai via a foreign airline flight. The FIA officials informed the police after taking the passenger in custody from the Karachi airport.

In another raid, the immigration officials arrested two Iranian citizens for travelling on Pakistani passports. Both passengers were departing for Sharjah via a foreign airline flight.

The officials claimed that Muhammad Ali and Abdul Samad were Iranian nationals. The passengers were being interrogated following their arrests, the officials added.

According to the FIA, Muhammad Ali was possessing a Pakistani passport number AM1833501 while Abdul Samad was also travelling on a Pakistani passport number AQ5271791.

Sources said that both Iranian nationals were also possessing Pakistani documents while an address of Balochistan’s Kech district was mentioned on the documents belonging to Ali. The officials found the address of Balochistan’s Awaran district on the documents of Abdul Samad.

Toyota said it will continue to launch the bZ series models in China, apparently with the aim of catching up to Tesla and other EV makers.

TOKYO – Toyota Motor Corp. has announced that it will launch its new electric vehicle, the bZ3, which will be jointly developed with Chinese EV giant BYD Co., in China, the world’s largest car market.

The bZ3 is the second in Toyota’s all-electric bZ series. The first sedan in the series, it can travel up to 600 kilometers on a single charge. FAW Toyota Motor Co., a joint venture between Toyota and a Chinese company, will be in charge of production and sales for the model, but prices and marketing timetables for the car have not yet determined.

BYD, founded in 1995, is a battery manufacturer with a rapidly growing EV business. In 2019, Toyota announced that it would develop EVs and automotive batteries jointly with BYD. The bZ3 uses a BYD battery.

In China, electric vehicles are rapidly being adopted. In addition to high-end EVs such as Tesla Inc. models, low-priced EVs in the range of ¥500,000 are also very popular.

In 2021, Toyota sold a record 1.94 million vehicles in China, mostly gasoline-powered and hybrid models. But its EV sales only totaled some 5,000 units.

Toyota said it will continue to launch bZ series models in China, apparently with the aim of catching up to Tesla and other EV makers.

In a worldwide launch earlier this year, Toyota released the bZ4X, a sport utility vehicle jointly developed with Subaru Corp., as the first model in the bZ series. Toyota aims to sell 3.5 million EVs per year globally by 2030.

Pakistan can still qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup semi-finals, but a lot will depend on the results of other teams. After losing to India and Zimbabwe, the Men in Green are on the brink of elimination from the tournament, where they were one of the favorites.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Babar Azam and other coaches for poor team selection. While Pakistan lost to India by 4 wickets, Zimbabwe thumped them by 1 run. Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar slammed Pakistan for not including Mohammad Wasim Jr. in the match against India.

In the second game against Zimbabwe, he took 4 wickets and scored 12 runs off 13 balls. Comparing him with India all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Gavaskar said that Pakistan should have included an all-rounder rather than two spinners against the Men in Blue.

“Their middle-order has a problem. Fakhar Zaman failed to get going. I feel their selection hasn’t been good. Mohammad Wasim should have been in the Playing XI as he can take wickets and score runs. Unke paas toh Hardik Pandya jaisa player hai, who can play lofty shots. And they didn’t play him against India. That is okay in Sydney, but at other venues, you need a player who can give you 3-4 overs and can score runs in the death overs,” he said.

Senior journalist Arshad Sharif died in Kenya's Nairobi city after reportedly being shot, confirmed his wife Javeria Siddiqui early Monday.
Police are investigating incident that killed 49-year-old journalist.

Taking to her official Twitter handle, Siddiqui said "I lost friend, husband and my favourite journalist Arshad today, as per police he was shot in Kenya."

According to ARY News, police in Kenya have opened an investigation into the gun attack that killed Sharif.

The 49-year-old had worked in various newsrooms in the country and was awarded the Pride of Performance by President Arif Alvi in March 2019.

He leaves behind a wife and five children.

Earlier this year, a spate of mysterious first information reports (FIRs) had emerged against journalists – Arshad Sharif, Sabir Shakir and Sami Ibrahim – over charges of sedition and peddling “anti-state” narrative.

The cases against the journalists were filed with police in several districts of Sindh and Balochistan with similar pattern and complaints.

The FIRs, filed by residents of the districts, had alleged that the journalists were stoking anti-national sentiments by maligning Pakistan Army and state institutions.

A case against then ARY News anchor Arshad Sharif was registered at a B-section police station in Hyderabad.

‘Striking the raw nerve’

The FIRs registered against the three journalists, all under similar charges and a similar pattern, had elicited alarms from the rights activists, journalists and politicians who had condemned the “attempt to muzzle press”.

Alarmed by what appeared like a “coordinated attempt” to quell dissent, the journalists and activists had noted that those who used to be in the good books of the powers that be have suddenly become the “enemies of the state” for striking their “raw nerve”.

Meiyappan becomes the fifth bowler after Brett Lee (2007), Curtis Campher (2021), Wanindu Hasaranga (2021) and Kagiso Rabada (2021) to record hat-tricks at the T20 World Cup.

UAE leggie Karthik Meiyappan took the first hat-trick of 2022 T20 World Cup against Sri Lanka in Geelong on Tuesday.

Meiyappan began by getting Bhanuka Rajapaksa caught off the fourth ball of the 15th over. He removed Charith Asalanka off the next ball, caught behind. Meiyappan completed his hat-trick by clean bowling Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka.

Meiyappan finished with figures of 3 for 19 from four overs.

“It’s a great feeling and it really hasn’t sunk in yet. I was trying to take the ball away from the leftie, I was lucky that he [Bhanuka Rajapaksa] sliced it to deep cover. [Charith] Asalanka, it was easy for me to bowl a wrong’un, and he nicked it, but [Dasun] Shanaka, that was a special ball, to get it through bat and pad. That was the biggest one. There wasn’t so much purchase off the wicket, but it was important to keep it wicket to wicket, if they miss I hit,” Meiyappan said during the innings break.

Meiyappan becomes the fifth bowler after Brett Lee (2007), Curtis Campher (2021), Wanindu Hasaranga (2021) and Kagiso Rabada (2021) to record hat-tricks at the T20 World Cup.

Meiyappan is the first player from an associate team to take a hat-trick against a Test team in men’s World Cups (T20Is or ODIs).

18/10/2022

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday decided to postpone local government elections in Karachi for a third time, according to a press release from the electoral watchdog.

The decision was taken following a third request by the Sindh government seeking postponement for three months of the LG polls in seven districts of Karachi, scheduled for October 23.

The second phase of the local government elections in Sindh was originally scheduled to take place on July 24. However, it was postponed twice due to unprecedented rains and the flooding crisis.

The Sindh government stated that there were difficulties in providing security for the polls as it is facing a shortage of 16,000 police personnel.

According to the press release, the ECP had no other option than to postpone the LG elections since “peaceful conduct of the election and the protection of the voters” was its top priority.

The ECP decided to hold another meeting after 15 days to gain feedback from the provincial government and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that local body polls are conducted as soon as possible and a date fixed for them.

The press release explained that the ECP had written to the interior ministry to ensure the provision of Pakistan Army soldiers and Rangers to compensate for the shortage of police personnel but the ministry responded that such a measure was not possible.

The interior ministry had informed the ECP that the army and Rangers could, albeit, be provided as a quick reaction force. The ministry’s response compelled the ECP to delay polls for the time being, the press release added.

Separately, it also said that by-elections for NA-45 Kurram will be held on Oct 30 and the necessary instructions have been issued in this regard to institutions to complete their arrangements.

The Kurram by-election was originally postponed from Oct 16 due to the law and order situation in the constituency.

Responding to the development, PTI Secretary General Asad Umar claimed the “imported government ran away again”. “How long will you run?” he questioned.

18/10/2022

The tournament is likely to be moved out of Pakistan, according to BCCI secretary and Asian Cricket Council president Jay Shah.

India will not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup in 2023, raising questions as to where the tournament might now be held. The development occurred on the day of the BCCI's annual general meeting in Mumbai, where BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is also the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president, suggested that next year's Asia Cup would have to be played at a different venue.

"The Asia Cup 2023 will be held at a neutral venue," Shah told media after the BCCI's AGM. "I am saying this as ACC President. We [India] can't go there [to Pakistan], they can't come here. In the past also, Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue." The new set of BCCI office bearers - the president Roger Binny, treasurer Ashish Shelar and Rajiv Shukla, who was re-elected as board vice-president - were present when Shah spoke to the media.

The ACC has not yet met to discuss the matter, let alone for a decision to be officially taken. That has raised questions within the PCB as to which capacity Shah was speaking in on the matter and why he chose to do so at a BCCI AGM. A PCB spokesperson said the board would not be commenting on the matter at this stage but a robust response is not out of the question: there is, for instance, already talk within the board of leaving the ACC.

Shah's comments could also hold some implication for ICC events, two of which are to be held in India and Pakistan over the next couple of years. India are set to host the 2023 ODI World Cup soon after the Asia Cup and then Pakistan are scheduled to host the 2025 Champions Trophy. If India cannot play in Pakistan and likewise, Pakistan cannot in India, it remains to be seen what impact it has on those tournaments. At the 2016 T20 World Cup, in India, Pakistan required their government's approval to travel to India and got it only at the last minute. The ICC is unlikely to comment on the issue at the moment.

Sindh High Court Chief Justice Ahmed Ali M Shaikh administers oath to Kamran Tessori

KARACHI: Kamran Tessori, a leader of the MQM-P, Monday took oath as the 34th Sindh governor after President Arif Alvi approved his appointment to the high-ranking office.

In the attendance of the province's leadership, Sindh High Court Chief Justice Ahmed Ali M Shaikh administered the oath to Tessori at the Governor's House.

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah, provincial ministers, MQM-P leaders Waseem Akhtar, Khawaja Izharul Hassan, and representatives of the business community attended the ceremony.

Speaking after the ceremony, Tessori said that he would try to fulfil the duties that he has been entrusted with.

"I will work in harmony with everyone to fulfil my obligations. With regards to the problems of the province, I will raise my voice at every relevant forum," he added.

The office of Governor Sindh was lying vacant after the resignation of former governor Imran Ismail who stepped down from the post after Imran Khan’s ouster from the PM Office in April.

Tessori comes back to MQM-P

Tessori has recently been re-inducted into the MQM-P. The move stirred controversy as many within the party had expressed their reservations.

On September 9, MQM-P in a meeting chaired by party's convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, decided to induct Tessori back into the party as the deputy convener.

However, it received severe backlash from a number of senior party leaders, who were absent from the meeting. They openly expressed their concerns over the party's decision.

Tessori was the primary reason behind the conflict between former MQM-P head Farooq Sattar and other party leaders that eventually led to the ouster of the former from the party.

The MQM-P coordination committee removed Sattar from the convener's post as the latter insisted on awarding the party ticket to Tessori in a by-election.

Later, Sattar formed another faction of the party called the MQM Restoration Committee.
