PTI chief Imran Khan, Senator Faisal Javed and several other party leaders were among those wounded in gunfire on the long march container at Wazirabad’s Allah Wala Chowk on Thursday.

The attack, characterised by the PTI as “targeted”, has triggered widespread condemnation from across the political divide.

There were also reports of the death of a party worker who was in the city to welcome the caravan, which was there for the party’s second iteration of its “Azadi” march. The assailant was reportedly subdued.

Senator Javed, who was also wounded and had blood stains on his clothes, told Geo News from the hospital: “Several of our colleagues are wounded. We heard that one of them is dead.”

According to PTI’s Imran Ismail, the party chief reportedly “received three to four bullets in his leg” while Javed was grazed by a bullet, according to Hammad Azhar.

“It was a clear assassination attempt. Khan was hit but he’s stable. There was a lot of bleeding,” Fawad Chaudhry told Reuters. “If the shooter had not been stopped by people there, the entire PTI leadership would have been wiped out.”

Azhar also said that PTI workers Omer Meyer and Rashid also received a gunshot each.

Local PTI members Ahmed Chattha and Chaudhry Yousuf were also injured.

Following the incident, Imran Khan was immediately shifted to a vehicle and evacuated to a hospital — in Lahore, according to Reuters — while other injured people were taken by ambulances to the nearby Wazirabad Institute of Cardiology.

According to rescue officials and PTI, ten people were injured due to the firing, including the PTI officials. Reports also said that one child was included in the injured people.

Footage on television showed an injured Imran Khan waving to supporters after reportedly being shot and then being carried to his bulletproof pickup truck.

In separate footage broadcast on television, one alleged assailant could be seen being subdued by party supporters and subsequent photos showed him being taken away but what looked like policemen

Trent Boult claims career-best figures to leave New Zealand well placed to top Group 1.

New Zealand 167 for 7 (Phillips 104, Rajitha 2-23) beat Sri Lanka 102 (Shanaka 35, Boult 4-13) by 65 runs

Sri Lanka had New Zealand 15 for 3 in the powerplay. But then they dropped Glenn Phillips, and it was all new Zealand from there. Phillips bashed 104 off 64 deliveries to almost single-handedly carry New Zealand to 167 for 7 (the next-highest score in the team was 22), before Trent Boult and Tim Southee put on a powerplay showcase, taking four wickets between them while the fielding restrictions were still on in Sri Lanka's chase.

Where New Zealand kept enough resources in store for a late-overs explosion, hitting 113 off the last 10, Sri Lanka squandered their batters before any sort of base could be established. They had crashed to 58 for 6 after 10 overs, and had no hope at all from there, eventually being bowled out for 102 as Boult finished with career-best figures of 4 for 13 and Southee claimed 1 for 12.

This result took New Zealand to the top of the Group 1 table, with five points and an outstanding net run rate of 3.85. It sent Sri Lanka down to near the bottom of the table, with two points after three matches, and a poor NRR of -0.89. This means New Zealand are in an excellent place to not only qualify for the semi finals but also finish top of their group. Sri Lanka, however, will find a semi-finals spot incredibly difficult to seize from here.

Phillips gets dropped
We're not out to make Phillips' century seem unearned, because of course it was. But had Pathum Nissanka held a sitter off Phillips in the seventh over, off the bowling of Wanindu Hasaranga, Phillips would have been out for 12 off 15, and New Zealand would have been 29 for 4. Phillips was also dropped for 45 off the 38th ball he faced - Dasun Shanaka unable to hold on to a tough chance running in from long off.

Meiyappan becomes the fifth bowler after Brett Lee (2007), Curtis Campher (2021), Wanindu Hasaranga (2021) and Kagiso Rabada (2021) to record hat-tricks at the T20 World Cup.

UAE leggie Karthik Meiyappan took the first hat-trick of 2022 T20 World Cup against Sri Lanka in Geelong on Tuesday.

Meiyappan began by getting Bhanuka Rajapaksa caught off the fourth ball of the 15th over. He removed Charith Asalanka off the next ball, caught behind. Meiyappan completed his hat-trick by clean bowling Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka.

Meiyappan finished with figures of 3 for 19 from four overs.

“It’s a great feeling and it really hasn’t sunk in yet. I was trying to take the ball away from the leftie, I was lucky that he [Bhanuka Rajapaksa] sliced it to deep cover. [Charith] Asalanka, it was easy for me to bowl a wrong’un, and he nicked it, but [Dasun] Shanaka, that was a special ball, to get it through bat and pad. That was the biggest one. There wasn’t so much purchase off the wicket, but it was important to keep it wicket to wicket, if they miss I hit,” Meiyappan said during the innings break.

Meiyappan becomes the fifth bowler after Brett Lee (2007), Curtis Campher (2021), Wanindu Hasaranga (2021) and Kagiso Rabada (2021) to record hat-tricks at the T20 World Cup.

Meiyappan is the first player from an associate team to take a hat-trick against a Test team in men’s World Cups (T20Is or ODIs).

18/10/2022

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday decided to postpone local government elections in Karachi for a third time, according to a press release from the electoral watchdog.

The decision was taken following a third request by the Sindh government seeking postponement for three months of the LG polls in seven districts of Karachi, scheduled for October 23.

The second phase of the local government elections in Sindh was originally scheduled to take place on July 24. However, it was postponed twice due to unprecedented rains and the flooding crisis.

The Sindh government stated that there were difficulties in providing security for the polls as it is facing a shortage of 16,000 police personnel.

According to the press release, the ECP had no other option than to postpone the LG elections since “peaceful conduct of the election and the protection of the voters” was its top priority.

The ECP decided to hold another meeting after 15 days to gain feedback from the provincial government and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that local body polls are conducted as soon as possible and a date fixed for them.

The press release explained that the ECP had written to the interior ministry to ensure the provision of Pakistan Army soldiers and Rangers to compensate for the shortage of police personnel but the ministry responded that such a measure was not possible.

The interior ministry had informed the ECP that the army and Rangers could, albeit, be provided as a quick reaction force. The ministry’s response compelled the ECP to delay polls for the time being, the press release added.

Separately, it also said that by-elections for NA-45 Kurram will be held on Oct 30 and the necessary instructions have been issued in this regard to institutions to complete their arrangements.

The Kurram by-election was originally postponed from Oct 16 due to the law and order situation in the constituency.

Responding to the development, PTI Secretary General Asad Umar claimed the “imported government ran away again”. “How long will you run?” he questioned.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has decided to crack down on tv and internet copper cables hanging on electricity poles, it is learnt reliably here.

According to the telecom regulator, it has come to its attention that operators lay their wires on the infrastructure of distribution companies, and accidents are happening due to internet and TV cables breaking and hanging from electricity poles and lying on the ground.

PTA has also initiated a nationwide survey to ensure that no licensee is using electric poles for the provision of their services through copper wires. The authority has issued fresh directions and asked all Fixed Local Loop (FLL) and Long Distance International (LDI) operators to install overhead and underground internet cables as per standards issued by the International Telecommunication Union.

According to the document available with Propakistani, PTA stated that its licensees are mainly using Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) for the provision of internet services across the country. Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) carries information using Optical or light-based technology. The fiber is made up of dielectric material which doesn’t conduct electricity. A case study of Karachi’s electrocution of humans indicates the majority of cables in the area belong to cable television operators.

According to the PTA document, electricity distribution companies are involved in allowing copper wires to be installed on poles. The major distribution companies including K-Electric charge Rs.10 per pole to allow the laying of copper wires. PTA has also provided OFC cable laying standards defined by the international telecommunication Union to NEPRA and other distribution companies.

Copper wires are not allowed to be hung on electric poles, to avoid accidents, these wires should be removed from electric poles immediately. PTA has instructed the operators to ensure a certain distance from power lines when lying optical fiber cables on electric poles.

Queen Elizabeth II and her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria were Britain's longest-reigning monarchs, who both came to the throne young yet remained a steady presence through yeras of dramatic change.

When they were born, both Victoria and Elizabeth were thought unlikely ever to inherit the crown.

But both women embraced the role thrust upon them and became much-loved national matriarchs.

Elizabeth's duty-driven style of monarchy was directly rooted in her illustrious ancestor's example.

Elizabeth and Victoria were both "exceptionally conscientious, strong-minded women, determined to do it absolutely as correctly as they could", royalty writer Andrew Gimson told AFP.

By the end of their reigns, both were seen as the embodiment of contemporary Britain.

Elizabeth reigned for 70 years and 214 days -- the first British sovereign to celebrate a platinum jubilee.

At her state funeral on Monday, Elizabeth's coffin will be carried on the same gun carriage used for Victoria's funeral.

Victoria's reign lasted 63 years and 216 days -- a record Elizabeth overtook on September 9, 2015.

In line with the duty-first attitude, Elizabeth only briefly referenced the occasion, while opening a railway line in Scotland.

She wore a diamond-studded brooch that once belonged to Victoria, but said the landmark was "not one to which I have ever aspired".

- British expansion and contraction -

Victoria ascended the throne in 1837, shortly after turning 18. She reigned until her death aged 81 in 1901.

Elizabeth was born in 1926, and reigned from 1952, when she was just 25. She died aged 96.

"The throne to which Elizabeth acceded remained recognisably the imperial institution it had become by the closing decades of Victoria's reign," historian David Cannadine wrote Saturday in The Guardian newspaper.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has dismissed the telecom industry’s petition for revision of tariff from commercial to industrial.

NEPRA in its verdict said that “value additions” used in the definition of the industry for the purpose of applying industrial supply tariff is used in the context of value addition through manufacturing or production process.

In case a broader meaning of the term “value addition” is assumed, a larger number of commercial activities will become eligible for the purpose, therefore, the Authority has turned down the request of the cellular mobile operators (CMOs).

Telecom operators in Pakistan are providing mobile and broadband services to 188 million subscribers with an annual turnover of over Rs. 400 billion, creating 25,000 direct and indirect jobs. The telecom sector has brought foreign direct investment of over $10 billion to date and continues to do so in the shape of license renewal, spectrum fees, etc.

In 2004, the telecom sector was declared an “industry” by the Ministry of Industries and Production. Therefore, all CMOs are entitled to benefit from the concessions available to “industry” including industrial tariff of electricity for its towers and exchanges but it was never granted in letter and spirit.

In 2014, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication also endorsed the request of the telecom sector including cellular mobile operators to be classified as “industrial undertakings” under clause (b) of Section 2 (29C) of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.

Seventeen years later, England make their return to Pakistan

Hales recall may mark start of new era for England, as Pakistan look to bounce back from Asia Cup.

Seventeen long years ago, in the cold of a misty December night, England's cricketers made their way off the field at Rawalpindi after a consolation victory in the fifth and final ODI. It was the final act of a tour in which little had gone right for England in either red- or white-ball format, not least for their all-conquering 2005 Ashes team, which had collapsed to a 2-0 defeat earlier in the month, to mark the beginning of the end of Michael Vaughan's reign.

Even amid the heightened post-9/11 security that that trip had entailed, however, few could have imagined that England's next visit would be put in abeyance for the best part of two decades. The sides have met on neutral soil in the UAE for three tours in the intervening years, most recently in 2015, but for many years - particularly after the events outside the Gaddafi Stadium in March 2009 - a return to actual cricket on Pakistani soil seemed inconceivable.

Slowly but surely, however, the groundwork has been laid - first through the path-finding efforts of the Pakistan Super League, which was founded in exile in the UAE in 2016 before holding its knockouts and final on home soil the following year: the start of an inexorable process of myth-busting, not least for the numerous England white-ball players in this current squad who have long since been persuaded of the country's warmth and hospitality.

In fact, it was telling - even before a ball had been bowled in this series - quite how cordial the relations are between the England and Pakistan players on show. Footage shared by the PCB on Monday showed the likes of Alex Hales and Shan Masood bantering about the English summer just gone, while Mohammad Haris - a probable debutant behind the stumps - coyly introduced himself to Jos Buttler as the two squads mingled freely.

After K-Electric’s controversial move of imposing KMC taxes on electricity bills, a viral video showed Karachi citizens throwing garbage inside the company’s vehicles, ARY News reported on Sunday.

Karachiites vented anger on K-Electric after the recent imposition of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) taxes through the electricity bills.

The citizens started registering complaints against the controversial move at the complaint centres and helpline 118 against the K-Electric management.

A video went viral on social media that showed a citizen running towards a K-Electric vehicle patrolling with a technical team. After reaching near the vehicle, the citizen picked trash bags from a garbage bin and threw them inside the truck.

A KE employee came out of the vehicle and started arguing with the citizen. To which, he replied that if the company was collecting KMC taxes then their employees should also pick up garbage in their vehicles.

Another citizen was filming the whole incident on mobile phone. Later, the man picked up more trash bags from the garbage bin and started throwing inside the company’s truck until the KE team went away from the street.

The citizens said that KE management was leading in tax collection but the company failed to provide uninterrupted power supply to the Karachi people.

KE’s controversial move

In September, K-Electric started collecting taxes on behalf of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) from the citizens of Karachi through the monthly power bills.

K-Electric, the sole power utility in Karachi, and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) have reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collect municipal utility charges tax (MUCT), through electricity bills.

The KE has imposed Rs50 tax on consumption of 200 units while Rs70 will be charged on the consumption of units between 200 and 700. Those using more than 700 units will have to pay a municipal tax of Rs200 per month.

Miftah Ismail assures masses that electricity tariffs will start declining from October this year.

Amid the coalition government’s indecisiveness over fortnightly fuel price change, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has said that the prices of petroleum products will witness a nominal change of Re0.08 per litre.

Speaking to a local TV channel on Saturday, the federal minister said the petrol or diesel will either be increased or decreased and added that the final decision on fuel prices will be taken today (Sunday).

Speaking about the declining rupee value, Miftah said he cannot predict the exchange rate of the local currency against the dollar but expressed hope that the rupee will witness stability.

However, he added that the government will not intervene to control the rupee value.

He also assured the masses that the electricity tariffs will start declining from October.

The people would enjoy maximum relief in the next two months. Relief and rehabilitation of flood-torn areas are the priorities of the coalition government, he added.

The minister said Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Asian Development Bank (ADB) are showing keen interest in various sectors of Pakistan.

Qatar was seeking a $3 billion plan to invest in the stock exchange, solar and LNG plants, he added.

Collectively, he said, investment of about $5 billion would be made in different sectors of Pakistan. The ADB alone would provide funds worth $1.5 billion to kick start projects of public interest, he added.

Expressing optimism about the support of world countries, he said: “We will overcome all difficulties being faced in the economic and business sectors with the help of friendly countries and international organisations.”

To a question about the confidence of investors in this region, Miftah said that the government is taking all possible measures to bring improvement in the stock market, currency, and investors' confidence.
