ritual prompt II : SELF - ADORNMENT and 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖉𝖗𝖊𝖘𝖘𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖗𝖔𝖔𝖒
“I came home. I enjoyed my bath. I enjoyed perfuming myself. I knew I was born for this, to do it over and over again, the ritual of the dressing, the perfuming fof love, for sensuality.”
( anaïs nin, from a diary entry )
just thinking about the dressing room - and the contained mirror, sink, table - as sites of ritualistic self-ornamentation . . . and the body as an avatar - a vessel to decorate. ☽
ritual emerges in intention and in repetition : perfume at the wrists and neck ; dressing up for dinner ; un******ng for sleep ; the act of tattooing or piercing the skin ; tying bows in one’s laces ; looking away from the mirror ( unable to confront or recognise )
self-adornment is performance or illusion that begins privately and bleeds into the public. it often wavers uncomfortably between the artistic liberation of the self and falling into the insidious expectation of conformity . . .
