after a short hiatus — ensconced in alien sigils and two-headed rabbits and childhood nightmares — we are climbing back out of the ether to remind you that SUBMISSIONS are still OPEN until 31st october . ꩜

the offering today is an abandoned + digitised + warped piece of sketchbook . as with issue II, we welcome stray, unfinished, scrawled pieces, dredged from sketchbooks and diaries and scraps of paper . . . illegibility and workings out and the red-raw inside of the mind .

as always, we want your visual art, poetry, prose ( fiction and non-fiction ) and any and all other esoterica with the vaguest relation to the UNREAL / UNREALITY .

please send in submissions to [email protected] — with titles, the artist’s name and other desired information included — by 31st october 2022 . ☽

UNREALITY — 𝔰𝔬𝔪𝔢 𝔞𝔰𝔰𝔬𝔠𝔦𝔞𝔱𝔦𝔬𝔫𝔰 𝔞𝔫𝔡 𝔡𝔢𝔣𝔦𝔫𝔦𝔱𝔦𝔬𝔫𝔰 ( 𝔱𝔯𝔞𝔫𝔰𝔠𝔯𝔦𝔭𝔱 ).

i. the realm of the dream (lucid, fevered, turned nightmare), the hallucination, the illusion. surrendering to the states of prayer and ritual worship. entry into gnosis. somnambulism. shrines (the creating, cleaning, kneeling before).

ii. surrealism — automatic art and writing. dissociation: derealisation (the waking dream), depersonalisation (look in a mirror — see a stranger). intoxication. watching one’s head roll away down the church pew. watching the wallpaper writhe.

iii. the architecture of the unconscious. sartre’s nausea. futurism. metamorphosis. spaces of unbelonging and liminality. fairylands (seelie and unseelie). the ghost lands of memory; the fantasies of childhood. running away from home. practise of the occult (scrying, tarot, runes). the creation of one’s own reality — solipsism, idealism. speaking aloud to the dead. submersion in water.

iv. language as arbitrary and metaphor. unreality as a supra- or hyper–reality — the excruciating phenomenology of milk and snow and heat and fur. the body as a foreign entity. coexistence of flesh and consciousness. transhumanism. meditation as the attempt to climb out, out. forging the cult of the grotesque, the peculiar, the uncanny.

unreality encompasses both ‘dreams’ and ‘ritual’ (our first two issue themes) — as well as all states and landscapes of madness, mysticism, illusion, dissociation, absurdity, surrealism, worship, the fantastical and fairy-tale . . .

we want your visual art, poetry and prose — from your collages to your dream diaries, film photographs to tarot spreads, prophecies to paintings, fashion, fragments of musings, essays, anything and everything under the sun (or moon) . . . we especially welcome any experimental or less conventional forms of artistic self expression. 🕯👁

if you have work you’d like to submit but are uncertain if it fits with the theme, we would love to receive it regardless.

we are over the moon to announce that the ‘ritual’ issue of lunulae is here at long last ☽

it is an artefact and exhibition and guide and cabinet of curiosities — 90 pages of art and writings and other installations — floating somewhere between the realms of the esoteric and mundane, sacrilegious and sacred, conscious and unconscious, body and soul . . .

more to be revealed in coming days — and in the meantime, you may order your issue now through this form for £4 — https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSejY8A3LdJuLAzrAOl7_GYu5POnlMtr-6mfb5Z-PpsZfBRoEg/viewform

PROMPT VI : TRANSUBSTANTIATION and 𝖗𝖊𝖑𝖎𝖌𝖎𝖔𝖚𝖘 𝖗𝖎𝖙𝖊𝖘

“I undressed, dove into the sea, and swam. I felt the sacrament of baptism in all its deathless simplicity on that day, understood why so many religions consider water and the bath, in other words baptism, the indispensable, presupposed condition of initiation before a convert begins his new life. [...] The simply everyday water is transubstantiated; it becomes the water of eternal life and renews the man. When the convert emerges from the water, the world seems changed to him.”

• details of contemporary rituals – religious, mundane, esoteric . . .
• images of altars and shrines
• insights into sketchbooks and journals and letters . . .

prompt V : RITUAL ART and 𝖒𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖎𝖆𝖑𝖎𝖙𝖞

the construction of art or knitting together of thought is ritualistic in itself, of course — the plain, raw ritual of returning again and again to the act of physical making. ☽

indulge our curiosity and allow us to crawl inside your material mind — your sketchbooks, collage, journal spreads, diary entries, moodboards . . . ( a celebration of illegible handwriting and absent-minded sketches ) . . . images of studio spaces and the artist themself and the process of making . . . the finished piece of art, yes — as well as everything that comes before.

we also welcome short essays or reflections on the rituals of creating art / literature.

ritual prompt IV : RITUAL ITEMS and 𝖈𝖔𝖑𝖑𝖆𝖌𝖊

a brief interlude — for some objects of ritual.

this can also function as an arcane collage kit if you so wish — collaging ( cutting, pasting, arranging, drawing ) is after all highly ritualistic in itself . . .

these items consist of :

a poppet in black edwardian dress and stiletto through the head. a pair of worn ballet slippers. a plate, cup and knife. ( or a pentacle, chalice and athame for the wilfully esoteric ). a quartz die. two pearl rosaries. two perfume vials — one in the shape of a cross, the other a heart.

and ( my favourite ) a human heart in a lead and silver case, found concealed in a niche in a pillar in the crypt beneath christ’s church. ☽

ritual prompt III : MORNING and 𝖓𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙

Blue plums in the pewter bowl—
may they wake wet in the earth the wren singing
and cull the sweetest violet.
But the children sleep secure in blankets.

I climbed by spinning arms and legs against walls,
awakened waist-deep in the water-well;
wrestled the black bull before an audience,
beat the wind without wings,
paced the steeds along pampas grass . . .

In the morning chill
I breathe moths in my cupped hands.

ritual prompt II : SELF - ADORNMENT and 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖉𝖗𝖊𝖘𝖘𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖗𝖔𝖔𝖒

“I came home. I enjoyed my bath. I enjoyed perfuming myself. I knew I was born for this, to do it over and over again, the ritual of the dressing, the perfuming fof love, for sensuality.”

( anaïs nin, from a diary entry )

just thinking about the dressing room - and the contained mirror, sink, table - as sites of ritualistic self-ornamentation . . . and the body as an avatar - a vessel to decorate. ☽

ritual emerges in intention and in repetition : perfume at the wrists and neck ; dressing up for dinner ; un******ng for sleep ; the act of tattooing or piercing the skin ; tying bows in one’s laces ; looking away from the mirror ( unable to confront or recognise )

self-adornment is performance or illusion that begins privately and bleeds into the public. it often wavers uncomfortably between the artistic liberation of the self and falling into the insidious expectation of conformity . . .

ritual plainly inhabits the realms of myth, worship, mysticism. the act of ritualisation, however, is also a means of imbuing the mundane - the routines of everyday life, of waking and sleeping and tea-making - with the sacred. the domestic becomes tinged with the occult . . . ☽

in 1525, dürer dreams of apocalypse - of the world drowning. when he wakes, he is moved to paint. he writes:

‘I had this vision in my sleep, and saw how many great waters fell from heaven.
