The 3 biggest design mistakes are bad font choice, too much text, and weak contrast.

Yes, the sky would be the limit when it comes to post designs.

But bad font choice is something that I see every day--on both slides and in print materials for businesses.

The name of the game is contrast, so your function should be to create contrast in the visuals you have included on your slide deck or website.

The main idea though, is to keep things simple.

What is your brand about? It's hard to tell, especially when you see contradicting statements. 😫

Having to explain the meaning of your brand to others is a sign that your branding lacks coherence. Also, if people are making up all sorts of explanations, that also means that there are too many subliminal messages mixed into your branding. 🥱

Your logo might be solid and your tagline interesting. Your packaging interesting. Your product description complete, but there is a disconnect somewhere. 😴

Everyday, I go through tons of logos, slogans, taglines and word combinations. But rarely do I see examples of three words working together to create a powerful message, that (a) me understand right away (b) makes me feel something. 🙁

If you do not consider and/or execute the above things (and many more), it is possible that your brand, along with your marketing and advertising strategies, will be met with confusion and rejection.🥵

A: Here's a tip! Create Content Pillars. A content pillar is a “central idea” or theme around which you build a group of related posts! 🤩

Instead of looking for TOPICS that interest YOU, look for topics that will interest YOUR CUSTOMERS. Like what THEIR pain points might be or their goals.

Now you have a basic framework from which to work from for future content. It WILL help you go from zero to hero in no time at all. 😉

Is your Instagram feed a complete mess? A photo gallery without a narrative, backstory or theme. Or just simply, on purpose, a total mashup of random images that ‘look nice’? 🤦‍♀️

STOP USING THESE HASHTAGS NOW!
YES, NOW!

Banned hashtags on Instagram can stop your business dead in its tracks. And if you don’t know which ones are banned, YOU COULD BE OUT OF BUSINESS.

You find a really cool hashtag on Instagram, but when you post your photo, you get a message saying it’s been removed because of ‘inappropriate content’.

"And what do you mean by inappropriate? Surely ‘ # adulting’ is okay, right?"

Sadly, NO.

There are lots of people who use spammy tactics that can be reported by other users. If you aren’t 100% sure about whether the hashtag you are using is allowed or not, your safest bet is avoiding it altogether.

Cutting and cropping photos and integrating them into a consistent grid design can be a headache. 🥵

There are lots of Instagram grid splitter available on the internet to do the job, but personally, I love Planoly since it makes it quick and easy to create my Instagram grid, so you can focus on what really matters – the content of your posts.

But before splitting your photos into grids, double check the resolution of original photo (double/triple the resolution) so that when you split the image, the resolution of each grid will still look great!

Using the wrong fonts together is like mixing red and pink paint to get purple. It’s never going to work! And if it does, you get something like… weird. Something that is not naturally cohesive and definitely doesn’t go with everything. It makes you look like an amateur. Ugh, A BUMMER.

A font pairing is simply two fonts next to each other, one of which is the body font and the other is the heading font. For example, using Helvetica Neue for your body copy and Roboto for headings will set your website apart from others; helping your reader’s eyes flow more easily and making things clearer and more readable.

Pairing typefaces or fonts is tricky, but always remember, visual aesthetic does the trick sometimes! So strive harder. 😉
