āRelief feels like happiness if you donāt know the difference.ā
Stephen is a paladin, although not what he once was. Even three years after his godās death, heās still as lost as when the grief was fresh. Grace is a perfumer, and a damned good one. So what if she has a shady past? When Grace and Stephen witness an assassination gone wrong, they begin to work together to find out what is going on in their cityā¦and who is behind it.
āCompetence is its own punishment.ā
This is hands down, the best meet cute I have ever read. EVER. I listened to the audio for this one and the amount of times I was full blown cackling while I was drivingā¦it was fantastic. I love reading fantasy books with older characters - adventures donāt stop once youāre in your 30ās, thatās for sure! Though it is easier to put your back out. Kingfisher has a real gift when it comes to writing a slow burn romance. That, and I never, ever thought I would love a MMC named Stephen. No offense meant to the Stephenās of the world!
Iāve read a few books by this author and this one easily ranks as my favourite so far. Itās rare to find a writer who makes me laugh that hard and yet is able to turn around and tug on my heartstrings in the same moment. This book has everything I want in a fantasy romance: a kind, solid MMC, a slightly anxious but competent FMC, a strong female friendship, and an adorable animal companion. Oh, and itās hilarious. What else could you possibly want? Read it, and read it now!
