LEVERAGE ON GRACE
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

In the past couple of months we have observed the trending news globally - increasing suicidal tendencies and high cost of living. These things are all interwoven. The Police officers who came from the enlightenment campaign in Malawi two weeks ago disclosed that one of the reasons pushing su***de rate among men is their inability to service their loans. Chances are that the high cost of living pushed them to debt, and the inability to pay back pushed them to su***de. It can be said that worry is pushing people to the precipice.

Corrie ten Boom has this to say about worrying: “Worrying is carrying tomorrow's load with today's strength- carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn't empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” Worry makes people carry loads beyond their capacity. What is God’s word on this? Our text discourages anxiety. Rather, we should make everything a subject of prayer. Instead of feasting on worry, we should rather feast on God’s grace. Every time we come to God’s presence and pour our hearts before Him, we are feasting on His grace. In His presence, we trade our worries for His supernatural help.

“And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”” ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭33‬:‭14‬ ‭NKJV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Divine presence is the third factor for Moses’ amazing results. Indeed, a man who spends much time with God will invariably carry the presence of God. By the time Moses descended from the mount after his second 40-day stay, his face shone, literally. “Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.” (‭‭Exodus‬ ‭34‬:‭29‬-‭30‬ ‭NKJV‬). Ironically, Moses did not even know that his face shone. Without any shadow of a doubt, changes take place when we are with the Lord. When we come out of our closets, people will be able to sense the aura of God even in our looks. What we say and do will testify that we have been with the Lord.‬‬‬‬‬‬

So much happens for someone who carries divine presence. You can never walk in confusion. Also, great works will manifest in your life. Nicodemus testified concerning Jesus that no one could do the great works He was doing unless God was with him. If great exploits is your goal, then divine presence is a must.

“Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.”” Exodus‬ ‭33‬:‭13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ ‬‬‬‬‬

In our previous meditation, we identified partnership as a key element in the success story of Moses. Today, we shift our focus to another key, which is his communion with the Lord. Moses had a strong communion with the Lord. Call that a strong prayer life. Apart from the two times that he had protracted sessions of 40 days each with the Lord on the mount, there were other shorter times recorded. And if we judge by the number of times the phrase “and the Lord said to Moses”, we can conclude that he must have spoken a great deal to the Lord himself. Many of what the Lord said to him came as answers to his requests. While partnering with man is good, nothing compares with partnering with God which prayer is a cardinal way of contracting. Unless we partner with God through prayer, many of our efforts will be fruitless.

This is a pattern we find with men and women who achieved great things for the Lord. It is on record that a friend of Martin Luther once asked him what his plans were for the following day. He replied, "Work, work from early until late. In fact, I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer". Interesting, isn’t it? He had so much to do that he had to spend the first three hours in prayer. What a contrast to us! It is when we have so much to do that we cut down on prayer time. People like Martin Luther and Moses realised that time spent with God is not wasted, rather it is easily replenished and makes our work easier, faster, and enduring.

“Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’” ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭33‬:‭12‬ ‭NKJV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

The Bible paid a glowing tribute to Moses as a man who was mighty in words and deeds. His greatness can be attested to in so many ways. Consider the fact that God knew him face to face. Consider also that when he died, God buried him and did not let the children of Israel know the site of his grave. I guess that the children of Israel would have made an idol of his tomb if they knew the place. So what accounted for that level of greatness and influence? There are several factors that we can identify, but we will limit ourselves to three which will form the basis of our meditation today and the next two days.

The first factor to consider is partnership. When God called Moses, he raised several concerns. One of them was who would go with him. The significance of partnership can be seen in Moses’ ministry. When the Israelites fought an unprovoked war against the Amalekites, Joshua took care of the physical end of the battle, leading the army in the valley. Moses, on the other hand, was overseeing the spiritual end of the battle. He had the rod of God stretched to heaven on the mount. Whenever the rod was held up straight, Joshua recorded victory; and whenever he let down the rod because of weariness, the Amalekites prevailed. The partnership he enjoyed with Aaron and Hur steadied his hands until Joshua was able to defeat the enemy. If what you are doing does not require the input of others, I doubt if that vision is big enough.

MANIFOLD BLESSINGS
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
“So two good things will result from this ministry of giving—the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God. As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God. For your generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ.” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭9‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Apostle Paul dealt extensively with the subject of giving in his epistle to the Corinthians. Specifically, two chapters in his second epistle to them are exclusively on this subject. In chapter 8:7, he praised them for their gift of faith, utterance, and knowledge as well as their diligence. In chapter 9, he showed them how to give acceptably and the manifold blessings of giving. In our text, two blessings are identified. Firstly, the recipient of our generosity is blessed. What you give to others, particularly those who are less privileged, helps to supply their needs. Secondly, God is blessed through your giving. Someone may be wondering how can God be blessed by man. God is blessed because those who benefit from your kindness praise Him. Praising God means blessing Him.

The giver is the third person who is blessed by the exercise. How does this happen? Those who receive your substance will not only bless God in praise and thanksgiving, but they will also lift up their voice of intercession on your behalf. They ask God to bless you in return and preserve all that is yours. So giving creates a cycle of blessing where God, the giver, and the recipient are blessed. With the manifold blessings attached to giving, it is not surprising that the devil is vehemently opposed to its practice.

PATHWAY TO ABUNDANCE
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
“There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭11‬:‭24‬ ‭NKJV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Senegalese-American singer, Akon, recently said that he once tried to own a private jet. He indeed got one but it stayed with him for only six months. After that he sold it, stating that it was rather too exorbitant to maintain. From there he went on to give a curious financial advice: “If you want to stay rich stay stingy. Don’t blow off your money”. If he meant that waste should be avoided when he said “don’t blow off your money’’, he cannot be faulted. However, to say that the only way to stay rich is to be stingy, he contradicted the Scriptures. Those who come to Christ need to know that they have entered a new kingdom with new rules.

The first crop of disciples that Jesus recruited went through such reorientation. Initially, they were busy hustling for positions, wanting to know who would be the greatest among them. Jesus had to explain that things are now different. In the world, the big men take their seats and have everybody at their beck and call. He taught them that things are different in the Kingdom. He then used Himself as an example. They called Him Lord and Master, but He was the one serving them. This and many other things point to different rules for different kingdoms. In God’s kingdom, we don’t become rich through stinginess as Akon advocated but through being liberal. The scripture does not oppose a savings culture but puts a limit. Withholding more than necessary will bring poverty, either in substance, character or both.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
“He bowed the heavens also, and came down With darkness under His feet.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭18‬:‭9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

The Bible describes our transition at new birth as moving from darkness into light. We are required to walk in the light. There are two sides to this. Firstly, walking in the light means hating the works of sin. Secondly, walking in the light means having the revelation of new creation realities and using them to our advantage. At new birth, God took His residence in us. We are as much in God as He is in us. Again, we have been made to sit with Christ in power and authority at the right hand of the Father. When these revelations become our guiding light, our confidence level will grow and we will be able to walk in victory.

Let us relate this to our text. The Bible declares that darkness is under the feet of God. Remember we already said we are in God. If this be true, then whatever is under the feet of God is under the feet of the Saints of God as well. The point is that not many things destroy believers; their undoing is traceable to ignorance of who we are, and where we are. In Ecclesiastes 2:13, the Bible tells us that light is ahead of darkness, just as wisdom is to foolishness. Believers are light; and no work of darkness is strong enough to overpower them. To be victorious, we have to constantly invoke the knowledge of who we are and our position in Him.

POWER OF A RENEWED MIND
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ NKJV‬‬‬‬‬‬

Our thoughts matter. This is because they are the seeds of our words and actions. There are several important things to know about thoughts. One is that they are repetitive until they lead to a particular mindset or become a stronghold. Also, most people are negative in their thought patterns. Consider what a source says: “It was found that the average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those thousands of thoughts, 80% were negative, and 95% were exactly the same repetitive thoughts as the day before.” (tlexinstitute.com > how-to-effortlessly-have-more-positive-thoughts). So if most people appear stuck, it is because of their negative and vicious thought patterns.

Jesus warned about how people think. It disqualified many people from partaking in His wonderful ministry. The people of Nazareth, where He grew up, were particularly worse off. They got stuck in their minds, thinking He was just the carpenter’s son that they knew. They missed the transition that occurred when He was baptized and the Father gave witness that He was the only begotten Son with whom He was pleased. To break loose from negative thought patterns and their limiting effect, you must learn to renew your mind by God’s word. Other exercises that will help reprogram the mind are prayer and positive confessions.

POWER OF PRAYER

“O You who hear prayer, To You all flesh will come.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭65‬:‭2‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

You probably know the acronym - PUSH - which stands for PRAY UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENS! In reality, every time we pray something happens. The 120 who survived Jesus were huddled together in the Upper Room until the day of Pentecost. They offered continuous prayer to God until something happened. Cloven tongues like fire descended and sat on all of them. They were all baptized in the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues. After Stephen, James was the second person who died for his faith in the Lord. The unbelieving Jews received the news of his death with so much excitement that King Herod proceeded to arrest Peter. He planned to wait till after Easter before executing him. But the Christians prayed, and something happened. The angel of the Lord came into the prison and delivered Peter.

Furthermore, Paul and Silas were imprisoned for preaching the gospel and liberating a demonised lady. At midnight, they prayed and sang praises to God until something happened. An earthquake shook the prison’s foundation and ripped apart the chains on the prisoners. The point we are making is that every time we pray, we are generating something. It could be fire, light, or wind - something is generated each time we pray. It may not be as spectacular as the ones we discussed here, but it doesn’t remove from the fact that something happens when we pray. If for nothing else, grace is released!

WISE WITNESS
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Years ago, a Christian student studying law at the University of Ibadan entered a mosque on the campus to preach Christ. He urged the people to repent. If that took place in some parts of the country, he probably would not come out alive. Even at that, the Muslim students protested the following day. They blocked the University’s entrance. Their counterparts at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, also caused some stir in solidarity.

When Jesus sent His disciples to preach, He notified them that they were going as sheep among wolves. Therefore, they must be wise as serpents while remaining harmless as doves. That is a paradox, isn’t it? Both are needed to make the most of one’s calling. Wisdom and faithfulness don’t mean the same thing, but they complement each other. To be faithful is to be true to a cause while being wise simply means employing discretion in the pursuit of that cause. If we do not apply wisdom in our quest for faithfulness to preaching the gospel, we become fanatics. This may endanger our lives, or discredit the gospel. If that student was credited with faithfulness and bravery, the same cannot go for wisdom. God called us to be witnesses for what He did for mankind through Christ; but we should be wise witnesses. A lack of wisdom in whatever we do can ruin our cause.

MAGNIFY YOUR ASSIGNMENT

“For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry,” Romans‬ ‭11‬:‭13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I once met a newspaper vendor at the American Consulate, Lagos, Nigeria. I believe that he had plied that place for a long time as he had become accustomed to what the embassy required from the applicants. So he takes to lecturing them on arranging their documents and comporting themselves during the interview. Possibly, he has not travelled out of the country before. He mixes his presentation with wits and humour and sends the audience into bouts of laughter. Many people end up buying papers from him. You could tell that he loved his work. Napoleon Hill said, “If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way”. The man was truly doing small things in a great way.

Apostle Paul was elated when talking about his calling. He was an apostle to the Gentiles and was quite happy and proud of it. He not only loved his work but staked his life for it. Success in life is not determined by whether we have a white collar-job or a blue collar-job. Success comes when we appreciate what we are called to do and pursue it with passion. Any worker who is always unhappy at work is probably in the wrong job. Your work should not just be a means of livelihood but fun as well.

FINDING HAPPINESS -2

“Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We now come to the last point on the list of what makes for happiness - working to serve other persons. When we discussed the role of family in maintaining happiness, we mentioned that most people have turned marriage into a transactional affair. The same observation can be made in the work life of so many people. Rarely do we find people these days serving altruistic purposes. Apostle Paul touched on the precarious nature of the last days in his second letter to Timothy. In that letter, he mentioned self-centredness. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy” (‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭KJV). The love of self accounts for why many people no longer serve wholeheartedly.

Similarly, Paul complained to the Philippians about how people were busy with self-promotion rather than what pertains to the gospel of Christ. “For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus.” (‭Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭20‬-‭21‬ ‭NKJV‬). Christianity was founded on the altar of sacrifice and not self-aggrandizement. Jesus came to serve and not to be served. To be a true follower of Christ is to give oneself to serving others with no strings attached. Your service to others then becomes a seed that brings back to you a harvest of happiness.

FINDING HAPPINESS -1

“You have put gladness in my heart, More than in the season that their grain and wine increased.” Psalms‬ ‭4‬:‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Our generation has seen more prosperity than previous generations. Ironically, this has not translated to more happiness. On the contrary, the world’s happiness has dipped. Professor Arthur C. Brooks, a specialist in the study of happiness, in a recent article in Harvard Business Review, noted that happiness entered into decline from the ‘80s and ‘90s. In his daily commentary of Wednesday September 6, 2023, Dr. Jim Denison quoted Brooks as he advanced the factors that influence happiness. “We know the habits that bring the happiest life—your philosophical or your faith life, your family life, your real friendships, and work that serves others in person—these have been in decline. When those things go in decline, there’s no tech that’s going to solve the problem.”

The three things identified by Professor Brooks will form the focus of our meditation today and the next couple of days. The first on the list is “your faith life”. Well, writing from an academic background, Brooks was careful so as not to be branded a religious bigot. So he calls it “your philosophical or faith life”. In plain language, no one can know true happiness without faith in the God of the Bible. C. S. Lewis said, “God cannot give us happiness and peace apart from himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.” Gaining the whole material world without God will leave the heart empty and miserable. In our text, David knew a depth of happiness that was not known to the moneybags of his days. The same is true even now. Only those who walk with God sincerely will enjoy the fruit of joy because you is a fruit of the Spirit.

LIFE IN GOD

“Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.” Hebrews 13:9 NKJV

Several passages of scripture show God’s commitment to meeting our temporal needs. As a matter of fact, we are told He takes care of the birds of the air and lilies in the valley. He has enough in store to take care of the young lions that cry. However, the desire to meet these needs must never become the basis of seeking God. In John 6, Jesus rebuked those who were seeking Him because they had partaken of the miracle loaves on previous occasion. Apparently, they were looking for another miracle meal. Jesus taught them to seek after the food that can uphold the soul.

The writer of Hebrews made it plain that food, regardless of how much we eat, cannot lead to the establishment of the inner man. Only grace can do that. By extension, no achievement or material acquisition can produce life after God. Unbelievers are yet to realise this fact. They spend their lives chasing shadows. It is even worse for those who profess faith in Christ to make feeding, clothing, and other material concerns the sole preoccupation. This will turn them into Gentiles. We should strive to grow in grace; this is the secret of living in God. When we embrace this type of life, it will then be God’s duty to bestow on us what we can handle at each phase.

DRAW NEAR TO GOD

“I will stand my watch And set myself on the rampart, And watch to see what He will say to me, And what I will answer when I am corrected.” ‭‭Habakkuk‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬ ‭NKJV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Proverbs 4:7 describes wisdom as the principal thing and directs us to get it. I also consider the ability to hear God as a principal thing. How important is the art of hearing God? Let’s check through the list. Noah heard God and escaped the overthrow by the flood. Moses heard God and became a mighty leader. He parted the Red Sea and did other incredible miracles. Elijah heard God and was fed throughout the years of famine. Hezekiah heard God and was healed of a disease. His ability to hear procured him healing.

Therefore, hearing from God is not one of those elective issues of our faith, it is as principal as wisdom itself. Of course, even wisdom is received through hearing. “A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,” (Proverbs‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬). The only thing that ranks in importance to hearing God is obeying Him. It is the way to a victorious, productive Christian living. Finally, those who desire to hear God’s voice must learn to draw near to Him. More often than not, the voice of God comes still and small as was the case with Elijah on the mount. The closer we get to God, the easier it becomes to discern His voice.‬‬‬‬‬‬

THE POWER OF EXTERNAL INPUT -1
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
“So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself.” ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭18‬:‭17‬-‭18‬ ‭NKJV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

In our previous meditation, we anchored Paul’s adorable life and ministry on two things - grace and perspective. There could be more, but these two factors played a major role in his life. Today, we will take the subject of perspective a little further, using another iconic figure in the Bible. Moses was a man described as mighty in words and deeds. Under his watch, he led an estimated two million people from slavery and settled them into a civil life in the wilderness. Though he was called and anointed by God, his success had external input. Someone had to help him gain the right perspective on administration.

Moses took on the unbearable burden of administering and judging the whole congregation. He would sit down to judge all the people every day! He saw nothing wrong in it. The two million people who crowded him daily with their problems equally saw nothing amiss. They were all like dwellers of the same apartment who had become one with the environment, including its peculiar odour which they could no longer detect, let alone detest. The coming of Jethro turned things around. The moment he saw the crowd around his son-in-law, he knew a disaster was looming, if nothing was done. He quickly raised an alarm. His alarm brought to the fore what Moses, with all his anointing, could not decipher. Sometimes, it will take an outsider to give us a better perspective on issues. Those around you, will determine what will be happening around you.
