The Government of Ethiopia is said to have hired Mercury Public Affairs lobby firm to counter the negative public perception it has been facing in the US & US allied countries. Many Ethiopians have been critical of the government’s lack of engagement in blocking and countering false narratives, engaging US Government officials and the media.
In a press statement released today by the Ethiopian Ambassador in Washington D.C. to announce the hiring of Mercury LLC, Ambassador Fitsum Arega said “We are launching this expanded outreach effort to American lawmakers, influencers and media in response to repeated requests by many Ethiopians in Ethiopia and the diaspora to ensure the needs and challenges of our country. We have brought on Mercury Public Affairs for consultations on strategy in this critical effort. We remain committed to full transparency, accountability and integrity in all of our engagements, both within the United States and beyond.”
The government’s decision to work with a reputable Public Affairs company like Mercury LLC seems to be the result of demand by Ethiopians both local and diaspora who were frustrated with dominance of false narratives in western mainstream media regarding the current situation in Ethiopia. Even though Ethiopian individuals and organizations where trying their best to counter the effects of false narrative, it wasn’t enough given the barrage of false narratives about the Ethiopian situation. Apart from the demand of Ethiopians who are keen to see more engagement of Government of Ethiopia, faced with parties that spend million in public relations and government affairs, the Government of Ethiopia was forced to realize the need to engage professionals to counter these false narratives.
