Breaking News: Former Ogun Speaker Oluomo Returns to Assembly One Year After Removal

One year after his controversial removal, the immediate past Speaker of the Ogun State Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, has returned to the legislative chamber.

Oluomo, who represents the Ifo I constituency, was ousted by 18 out of 26 Assembly members over allegations of gross misconduct, highhandedness, lack of focus and transparency, financial misappropriation, and pursuit of selfish interests. Following his removal, Oludaisi Elemide was sworn in as the new Speaker on January 30, 2024.

Since his ouster, Oluomo had refrained from attending plenary sessions or visiting the Assembly Complex. However, on Thursday, he was seen driving into the Assembly premises in Okemosan, Abeokuta, and departing shortly thereafter.

Sources revealed that a court case between the former Speaker and the Assembly regarding the leadership change had been determined on Tuesday, paving the way for Oluomo’s return.

Responding to the development, Speaker Elemide maintained that Oluomo had not violated any legislative rules by his absence from plenary sessions.

“Yes, the immediate past Speaker was here today. Our legislative calendar begins on June 20, 2023, and runs until June 20, 2024. The second year will conclude in June 2025. The constitution mandates a minimum of 181 sitting days, including plenary and oversight sessions. He has not contravened that requirement,” Elemide stated.

He further explained that Oluomo’s absence was justified as the court case over the leadership change was ongoing.

“If I am still challenging a system in court and I continue to participate in it, that means I have accepted its legitimacy. So he took his time until the case was resolved. The case was determined on Tuesday, and today is our next sitting, so he is here. Legally, has he committed an offense?” he asked.

The return of Oluomo signals a new phase in Ogun State Assembly politics as stakeholders watch closely to see how legislative activities unfold moving forward.

ALLEGED BRIBE: GOV AIYEDATIWA SACKS AIDE, ORDERS PROBE

The Governor of Ondo State, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has dismissed from office the Special Assistant on Forestry (Central Senatorial District), Mr. Adeboye Taofiq Ewenla, with immediate effect.

This followed allegations of bribery and intimidation leveled against Mr. Ewenla by some timber merchants in the State.

Governor Aiyedatiwa also ordered a probe into the activities of those saddled with the responsibility of managing forest reserves in the State.

A replacement for Mr. Ewenla will be announced in due course.

The Governor urged all political appointees to conduct themselves in line with the provisions of the law and rules guiding their duties.

ONDO ASSEMBLY REJECT APPROPRIATION BILL SENT BY GOVERNOR LUCKY ORIMISAN AIYEDATIWA.

A bill to amend the 2024 Appropriation bill and authorized the issue from the consolidated revenue fund of Ondo State of Nigeria,A sum of four hundred and eighty seven billion,four hundred and thirty seven million,one hundred thousand naira(487,437,100,000) was rejected on a first reading by the Ondo state House of assembly.

The bill which was opposed by the Hon member representing Akure South 1,Hon Olajide Oguntodu and seconded by Hon Raymond Oluwatoyin.

Hon Oguntodu Olajide opposed that the 2024 budget approved has not been attended to in the month of October, and it's 2 month to end the year, it's not proper to bring another bill when project what of billions has not been executed and fund was approved for it.

Thereby Summon the Hon commissioner for Finance to report on Thursday 10th of October to explain how they have spent 2024 appropriation bill.

As the photo went viral, it symbolised the widespread frustration and desperation of a population struggling to survive amidst crippling hunger and soaring living costs, despite the heavy police presence.

He explained his motivation in a video posted by Arewa Blog, saying, "I came out to protest because of hunger, the government’s inability to provide jobs, and I was not afraid of been arrested by the police."

The protests, which began on August 1, 2024, are driven by widespread dissatisfaction with economic conditions and growing discontent with President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The demonstrations are planned to last for 10 days.

In response to the unrest, the Borno State government earlier imposed a 24-hour curfew.

ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, Public Relations Officer for the state police command, announced the curfew on Thursday to contain the protests.

The Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has dissolved the board of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).

The dissolution takes immediate effect.

The Chairman is hereby directed to hand over to the Secretary of the Commission.

The Governor thanks the Chairman and other members for their services and wishes them well in their future endeavours.

I commiserate deeply with the family of late Sylvester (Jnr) Oromoni, the 12-year old pupil of Dowen College, Lagos.

As a parent, I share the grief Sylvester's demise has brought upon his parents and the entire household. The incident is not only sad, but disturbing and heartbreaking.

Consequently, I have ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter. But while that is going on, I would like to give Sylvester's parents and entire citizenry of Lagos, the assurance of my full support at this trying time.

I share their pains and sense of loss. Indeed, words are inadequate to describe my feelings, but I pray that God Almighty will soothe their pains, and grant Sylvester Jnr eternal rest.
