Johnny Bower, born John William Kiszkan on November 8, 1924, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, was a legendary Canadian ice hockey goaltender renowned for his remarkable career in the National Hockey League (NHL) and his lasting impact on the sport. Bower's journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of hockey's most respected and beloved figures is a testament to his skill, perseverance, and dedication.

Bower's passion for hockey began at a young age, and he quickly developed a reputation as a talented goaltender. During World War II, he enlisted in the Canadian Army, serving for several years before returning to pursue his hockey career. Bower's professional career began in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he played for the Cleveland Barons and established himself as a standout goaltender.

In 1953, Bower made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers. However, it wasn't until he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1958 that his career truly flourished. Despite being considered an older player by NHL standards, Bower's exceptional skill and work ethic earned him the nickname "The China Wall" for his impenetrable goaltending.

Bower's tenure with the Maple Leafs was marked by numerous achievements and memorable moments. He played a crucial role in leading the team to four Stanley Cup championships in the 1960s (1962, 1963, 1964, and 1967), solidifying his status as one of the greatest goaltenders in the history of the franchise. His ability to make acrobatic saves, coupled with his fearless and aggressive style of play, made him a fan favorite and a formidable opponent.

One of Bower's most notable attributes was his resilience and longevity. He played until the age of 45, an impressive feat for a goaltender, and retired with a stellar record. Bower's contributions to the game were recognized with his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976, cementing his legacy as a hockey icon.

Off the ice, Bower was known for his humility, kindness, and dedication to the community. He remained active in various charitable endeavors and was a beloved figure in Toronto, where he continued to reside after his retirement. Bower's approachable and friendly demeanor endeared him to fans and fellow players alike, and he was often seen engaging with the hockey community through events and appearances.

Johnny Bower passed away on December 26, 2017, at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and resonate within the hockey world. His contributions to the sport, both on and off the ice, are remembered with great respect and admiration. Bower's story is one of perseverance, excellence, and the enduring impact of a true sports legend.

According to reports, Jeff Marek was in fact released by Sportsnet after it was believed he was leaking draft picks to the media before they were announced live at the draft.

“According to The Athletic, Marek was questioned by the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) and NHL security on allegations that he leaked information about which players teams were drafting moments before the picks were made public during the 2024 NHL Draft.

Marek allegedly provided insider information to his "friend," reported to be Mark Seidel, a former NHL scout who Marek has collaborated with in the past. During Sportsnet's draft coverage, Seidel accurately predicted several draft picks on social media. This prompted concerns that Marek had tipped him off.”

Sharing such non-public information for financial gain, such as sports betting, is illegal. Sports leagues closely monitor social platforms during events like the draft to watch for integrity issues.Even if no actual betting took place, Marek allegedly shared proprietary information with someone outside Sportsnet. This could likely put the network in a difficult position, given that Sportsnet has broadcast rights to the NHL through 2026.
