To grasp why Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather has been so popular for 50 years, Al Pacino suggests starting at the film’s opening, when an immigrant father asks Don Vito Corleone for justice after the police have ignored an assault on his daughter.

“It’s a brilliant tragedy of this man, Michael Corleone, who does everything in his power to save his family and keep it together, and by that act winds up destroying his family.

The Godfather’s influence on The Sopranos, set in the 1990s, was so pervasive, Winter says, that the HBO series’ mobsters would refer to the films as “One” and “Two” without even having to say The Godfather: Part II.

Winter says the similarities between The Godfather and Yellowstone can be seen in “the inner dynamics of that family, the darkness and the history and the willingness to engage in unsavory behavior.”

Among the many reasons The Godfather resonates so deeply, Pacino points to Vito Corleone’s dashed hopes that Michael would become a senator or a governor.

It will also include retail gift card purchases so long as they’re redeemed during the two-week window.

As part of the effort, Microsoft will also be “committing their net proceeds for Fortnite during this time, so that we can get more aid to the people of Ukraine.”

After spending around $4.5 billion last week to buy 91.2 million shares of Occidental Petroleum, he’s spent more than $1.5 billion this week to add another 27.1 million shares to Berkshire Hathaway’s stake.

And it gives Berkshire nearly 12% of Occidental’s outstanding shares.

When its warrants to buy nearly 84 million shares, obtained as part of its 2019 deal that helped finance Occidental’s purchase of Anadarko, are included, the stake that the SEC pays attention to is around 20%.

The warrants have an exercise price of $59.624, which means they are a few cents away from being ‘in the money.’ Berkshire could then use them to buy at a price lower than the market price, generating an instant paper profit, which increases as the stock prices goes up.

Occidental shares are up nearly 90% over the last 12 months as oil prices have surged.

Russian forces pounding the port city of Mariupol shelled a mosque sheltering more than 80 people, including children, the Ukrainian government said Saturday.

Ukraine’s military said Saturday that Russian forces captured Mariupol's eastern outskirts, tightening the armed squeeze on the strategic port.

Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, said Saturday that a Russian general was killed in fighting for Mariupol.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s said Friday that Russian authorities received requests from over 16,000 people from the Middle East who are eager to join the Russian military action in Ukraine.

Earlier attempts to establish evacuation routes from Mariupol failed under ongoing sheling. Russian forces are also blockading Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Manchester City have 'a deal in place' to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer, The Daily Mail reports.

City have apparently discussed personal terms with Haaland, with it being claimed that they are now confident of getting a deal done to take the Norwegian to the Premier League.

Indeed, personal terms have reportedly already 'been discussed' and 'the framework of the transfer is ready to be signed off by City chiefs'.

What else is being reported by the UK media about Haaland?

"Haaland's representatives have spoken to a number of clubs but City have emerged as the leading candidate with Real Madrid chasing a deal for Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona hampered by financial issues.

"But now the club has started to pressure me into making a decision, but all I want to do is to play football.

Live video conferencing infrastructure startup 100ms, based in India and the U.S., has raised $20 million in Series A funding to power the next generation of live video apps, coming barely five months after closing a seed round.

“And that is when it all started, we were like no, in this new world, where most experiences are going to be through live videos, it should not take four months to build such platforms,” added Gupta, who co-founded the startup with Aniket Behera and Sarvesh Dwivedi.

The challenge they experienced to build the app inspired them to create live video infrastructure to allow companies in edtech, fitness and entertainment to add Zoom-like video conferencing inside their apps and livestream the apps to platforms like YouTube and Facebook.

It could be an edtech company doing online classes, a health tech company who’s doing telehealth calls between a doctor and a patient or somebody selling something via live commerce,” said Gupta, who worked as a live video infrastructure product manager at Meta before joining Disney Hotstar.

Since August last year, over 2,200 businesses have used 100ms live video infrastructure, including FrontRow and WhiteHat Jr, both edtech platforms; Circle, a platform for creators and brands; Paytm Insider, a live events platform; and Kutumb, a community app.

Film Festival’s artistic advisor and its artistic director for many years, has died, the festival confirmed Friday.

Established in 1946, Karlovy Vary is one of the world’s oldest film festivals, and one of its most prestigious, considered to be the leading festival in Central and Eastern Europe.

But in 1994, when a new team led by film journalist Zaoralová and actor Jiří Bartoška stepped in, as the festival’s artistic director and president, respectively, its fortunes had declined, after decades of political interference by the former communist regime.

Its industry section, Eastern Promises, which seeks to discover promising filmmakers from Central and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, attracts more than 1,300 distributors, sales agents, producers and festival programmers to the festival.

The prestigious award was awarded to Zaoralová for her many years as the artistic head of the festival, and for her lifelong promotion of Czech films and filmmakers abroad.

10/03/2022

Amazon announced its first stock split since the dot-com boom, telling investors on Wednesday that they’ll receive 20 shares for each share they currently own.

Stock splits are cosmetic and do not fundamentally change anything about the company, other than possibly making the shares accessible to a larger number of investors because of their cheaper price.

Amazon is the latest highly valued tech company to pull down the price of each share through a split.

“This split would give our employees more flexibility in how they manage their equity in Amazon and make the share price more accessible for people looking to invest in the company,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement.

Last month, Amazon boosted its maximum base salary for corporate workers to $350,000, up from $160,000, as it contends with an increasingly competitive labor market. Historically, Amazon has relied on generous stock awards to attract talent, but the shares underperformed in 2021, and employees have pressured the company to make changes.

In 2015, Microsoft bought Christian Reber’s to-do list app, Wunderlist, for a sum that was reported to be between $100 million and $200 million.

“I was completely burnt out and I was tired and I felt like it was the best decision for everyone involved to sell the company,” Reber said, adding that he had to put on a “poker face” as he did it.

“Still sad Microsoft wants to shut down Wunderlist, even though people still love and use it,” Reber wrote on Twitter in Sept. 2019.

One of the main reasons Reber felt frustrated when Microsoft shut down Wunderlist was because he felt that the app never became the product he wanted to build.

“The reason we started this company is because we felt like presentations as a medium are really driving the world and influence the biggest decisions in business and politics,” Reber said.

10/03/2022

The former Trump lawyer John Eastman – who helped coordinate the scheme from the Trump “war room” at the Willard hotel in Washington – conceded in an email to counsel for then vice-president Mike Pence, Greg Jacob, that the plan was a violation of the Electoral Count Act.

But Eastman then urged Pence to move ahead with the scheme anyway, pressuring the former vice-president’s counsel to consider supporting the effort on the basis that it was only a “minor violation” of the statute that governed the certification procedure.

The admission that the scheme was unlawful undercuts arguments by Eastman and the Willard war room team that they believed there was no wrongdoing in seeking to have Pence delay the certification past 6 January – one of the strategies they sought to return Trump to power.

It additionally raises the prospect that the other members of the Willard war room – including Trump’s former attorney Rudy Giuliani and Trump’s former strategist Steve Bannon – were also aware that the scheme to delay or stop the certification was unlawful from the start.

But if Eastman knew the scheme violated the law, it raises the additional possibility that Giuliani also knew it was unlawful when he called the Republican senator Tommy Tuberville and asked him to object to Biden’s wins, after the Capitol attack had taken place.

American and European firms have been cutting ties with Russia or at least reducing their business in the country since it invaded Ukraine, but Chinese technology businesses have remained relatively quiet.

Some companies have cut business in Russia to comply with these sanctions.

While many Western companies have spoken out against the war and reduced business in Russia, Chinese companies have remained silent and taken little action.

“Unless the Chinese government changes its foreign policy suddenly, Chinese firms are unlikely to ‘act geopolitically.’ Whatever tone Beijing sets, is the tone these companies will adhere to.

The Chinese firm has a joint venture in Russia with internet company Mail.ru Group, Russian mobile-telecommunications operator MegaFon and sovereign-wealth fund Russian Direct Investment Fund.

Shane Warne, the legendary Australian spin bowler considered one of the greatest cricketers of all time, has died aged 52 of a suspected heart attack while in Thailand.

You changed Cricket. RIP Shane Warne.”

Ian Botham, the former England player and cricket commentator, said Warne was “one of the best” and that he had lost a “great friend on and off the playing field”.

One of his most famous wickets was his first against England, in his first Ashes Test. Bowling to Mike Gatting at Manchester’s Old Trafford in 1993, Warne bowled what is often described as the “ball of the century”, which pitched way outside leg stump and ripped back across the wicket to remove off stump, leaving Gatting utterly perplexed.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who was coached by Warne in the Indian Premier League, wrote on Instagram: “Australian Legend.

In comments made during a discussion moderated by CNBC’s Karen Tso at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Paul Polman suggested that a company’s performance can be boosted by factors relating to environmental, social and governance .

“You have to be sure that, whatever you do when you run a company, that you get the results as well,” said Polman at the panel on Tuesday.

Polman added that “hard data” was showing that “more gender diverse companies perform better, companies that internalize climate challenges and reduce those perform better.” This also applied to firms addressing “human rights issues” in their value chain.

In February, a California civil rights agency sued the company, alleging racist harassment of and discrimination against Black workers that has persisted for years at the company’s car assembly plant and other facilities in the state.

This often leads to accusations of greenwashing, a term environmental campaign group Greenpeace UK has called a “PR tactic” used “to make a company or product appear environmentally friendly without meaningfully reducing its environmental impact.”.

Combat raged elsewhere in Ukraine as Russian forces surrounded and bombarded several cities in the second week of the assault launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Although the plant was later said to be safe and the fire out, officials worried about the precarious circumstances, with Ukrainian staff now operating under Russian control.

Russia's grip on a plant that provides more than a fifth of Ukraine's electricity was a big development after eight days of war in which other Russian advances have been stalled by fierce resistance.

Russian troops "all should go to hell," said Igor Leonidovich, 62, an ethnic Russian who had moved to Ukraine 50 years ago as a boy.

Only one sizeable Ukrainian city, the southern port of Kherson, has fallen to Russian forces since the invasion began.

In the meantime, given the scale of the emerging refugee crisis, we are working with our NGO partners to provide urgent aid and other humanitarian assistance."

Given the ongoing military action in Ukraine, "we will be pausing our planned theatrical releases in Russia, including the upcoming release of Morbius", a Sony Pictures Entertainment spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Cyber conflicts are fought in the shadows, but in the case of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it is a group that calls itself Anonymous that has made the most public declaration of war.

Someone hacked into Russian state TV channels.

A spokesperson for the channel said: “After the statement by Anonymous, RT’s websites became the subject of massive DDoS attacks from some 100 million devices, mostly based in the US.”

Ukrainian websites were hit with DDoS attacks ahead of the offensive, including the Ukrainian defence ministry and PrivatBank, Ukraine’s largest commercial bank, but there has been nothing on the scale of the NotPetya assault in 2017 – when a devastating malware attack attributed to Russia destroyed computers in Ukraine and around the world.

“The cyber activity from Russia against Ukraine has been there, but is consistent with Russia’s cyber harassment of the country going back years.

28/02/2022

British oil giant BP said Sunday that it is “exiting” its $14 billion stake in Russian oil giant Rosneft over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in one of the biggest signs yet that the Western business world is cutting ties over the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

BP, which reportedly came under pressure from the British government to sever the Rosneft relationship, also said its current and former chief executives — Bernard Looney and Bob Dudley — have resigned from the Russian company’s board “with immediate effect.”

It has led the BP board to conclude, after a thorough process, that our involvement with Rosneft, a state-owned enterprise, simply cannot continue,” BP chair Helge Lund said in a statement Sunday.

On Friday, after Russia began its invasion, Kwarteng summoned BP CEO Looney to a meeting to express his concern about the Rosneft holding, the Financial Times and other media reported.

“It has caused us to fundamentally rethink BP’s position with Rosneft. I am convinced that the decisions we have taken as a board are not only the right thing to do, but are also in the long-term interests of BP.”

28/02/2022

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his country is committing 100 billion euros to a special fund for its armed forces—the latest in a series of major shifts in German defense and security policy this weekend in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Scholz also announced that Germany will build two liquefied natural gas terminals and raise its natural gas reserves to cut its dependence on Russian gas after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

CNN's Jim Sciutto called the moves the "most direct evidence of Putin's miscalculation" as Russia's attack on its neighbor "may both strengthen and even expand NATO" and also "reduce European dependence on Russian natural gas."

It came after Germany on Saturday said it will send 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 "Stinger" surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine "as quickly as possible" after previously resisting Kyiv's calls for defensive weaponry.

Germany this week also halted the $11 billion Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project with Russia.

To twist the words of Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent, it’s always darkest before the dawn, especially at the box office.

Big-budget spectacles and adaptations of well-known properties can tend to be front-loaded in terms of box office grosses, so a drop of less than 50% is a marked victory for “Uncharted.”

Last weekend, the Tom Holland action vehicle enjoyed the domestic box office’s biggest opening since the star’s last film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which dominated the holiday season to become the third highest-grossing domestic film release in history.

The rest of the cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Sophia Ali and Antonio Banderas.

Based on a story by the band’s frontman Dave Grohl, the genre film follows Foo Fighters as they battle supernatural forces while attempting to record their next studio album.

The release should expand its domestic gross to $32 million through Sunday, a number far below its reported production budget of $90 million.
