Rt. Hon. Kwamoti B. Laori Decries the Recent Increase in Electricity Tariff in Nigeria: Calls for Review.

At the special public hearing of the Joint House of Reps Committees on Power, Commerce, National Planning and Delegated Legislation, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and reps of Civil Society Organization all presented their positions on the policy.

Stakeholders underscores the need for an electricity sector that is efficient and reliable as being fundamental to Nigeria's infrastructure and industrial growth. They however urge government to be sensitive to the welfare of Nigerians by implementing policies that supports private sector investment and industrialization.

According to the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, the over 300% increase in electricity tariff has led to the shorting down of many manufacturing industries both large and small scale due to high cost of production.

The cumulative effect of the policy on unemployment and insecurity can only be imagined.

The people's law maker, representing Demsa/Numan Lamurde Federal Constituency also described the increase in electricity tariff in Nigeria as insensitive to the suffering of the masses who are yet to cope with the impact of subsidy removal on petroleum products.

The law maker acknowledged the impact of the increase on national economic growth and productivity, unemployment and the general welfare of Nigeria's citizens assured stakeholders that the committee would review all presentations made.

During the public hearing, a representative of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission attempted to halt the proceedings on grounds of an existing Court process.

In his response Rt. Hon. Kwamoti B. Laori, being a lawyer himself clarifies that the court processes refered to cannot hinder the public hearing from continuing on the grounds that the voices of Nigerians who are not parties to the suit in court is crucial and the public hearing by the House of Reps represents such voices.

Hon. Kwamoti's clarifications was supported by Prof. Sam Amadi and other learned colleagues in the committee which allowed the public hearing to proceed unhindered.

It is hope that the outcome of the public hearing yields better reviews on the current electricity tariff regime to save manufacturing companies, workers in private sector and indeed the Nigerian populace from the further negative impacts of the regime.

Court Reinstates Kaduna Monarch, Jonathan Zamuna, Dethroned By Former Gov. Nasir El-Rufai, Awards N10m In Damages Against Kaduna Govt

Five days after the Kaduna State Assembly probe panel indicted former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai of misappropriating 423 billion Naira, the National Industrial Court, sitting on Monday, nullified his dethronement of the paramount monarch of Piriga Chiefdom, His Highness Chief Jonathan Pharaguwa Zamuna.

Delivering a 53-minute judgment, Justice Bashir Attahiru Alkali, having established that the Industrial Court has jurisdiction to entertain the case, averred that the government of former Governor El-Rufai did not comply with due process in dethroning the third-class monarch of Piriga. Therefore, he declared the act unconstitutional, illegal, unfair, null, and void.

The court ordered the reinstatement of Chief Zamuna to the throne with all salaries and privileges restored. Additionally, it ordered the Kaduna State government to pay damages of 10 million Naira to Chief Zamuna and comply with the judgment within 30 days.

Reacting to the ruling, Henriata Yokunbo Esquire, who represented the lead counsel to the claimant, Napoleon Idenala, emphasized fair hearing as key to justice and the rule of law.

However, James Kanyip Esquire, representing the lead counsel to the defendant and the Kaduna State government, declined to comment on the ruling.

It will be recalled that Chief Zamuna was dethroned on May 22, 2023, by the government of Nasir El-Rufai, a few days before the end of his tenure, following a communal clash in the chiefdom that resulted in two deaths and the burning of houses.

Chief Zamuna approached the Industrial Court, seeking to set aside the dethronement due to lack of fair hearing, as he neither received a query nor was invited to present his side of the story regarding the allegations against him.

Dear Citizens of Adamawa State,

Today, we gather to celebrate Democracy Day, a day dedicated to honoring the unwavering resolve of our democracy heroes those who fought tirelessly to ensure we have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Reflecting on June 12, 1993, we remember the election that was deemed the freest and fairest in Nigeria's history. We have since walked a path that has demanded immense sacrifices, costing many lives and bringing pain to individuals and communities. Yet, our commitment has never wavered.

Among those who fought for our democracy were many devoted women. It is not a coincidence that women were deeply involved in this struggle. For instance, Kudirat Abiola paid the ultimate price with her life.

Today, these brave souls would look back with pride to see that Nigeria has enjoyed over 25 years of uninterrupted democracy a testament to our progress, achieved at great cost.

Over the past year, Adamawa State has become a shining example of democracy in Northern Nigeria. Remarkably, each of our three senatorial zones has, at least once, produced a female senator.

Additionally, we are the first state in the North East to have a woman as Deputy Governor. Most recently, our dear Governor, my husband, made a groundbreaking announcement to ensure a female Vice Chairman in each of the 21 Local Government Areas a historic and unparalleled Democracy Day gift to our State.

As we celebrate today, let us solemnly remember those who stood and fought for our democracy, making tremendous sacrifices. Let us also pray for our leaders, who continue to stand firm to ensure that democracy thrives.

May God bless Adamawa State and Nigeria.

Governor Fintiri Rejoices With Citizens On Democracy Day

Adamawa State Governor, the Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, rejoices with the people of Adamawa State and all Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day, June 12th.
“I commend the resilience and determination of Nigerians in upholding democratic values and principles. May I also acknowledge the progress made in the past two decades and pledge my administration's commitment to deepening democracy and improving the lives of citizens.”
The Governor urges all Adamawa residents to embrace peace, unity, and harmony, as the state celebrates this significant milestone.
“As we mark this year's Democracy Day, I acknowledge the hardships and challenges that many Nigerians still face, and I regret that our democracy has not yet yielded the desired dividends of comfort, security, and prosperity for all citizens.”
He urges residents of the State to sustain the hard-earned peace the administration has built over the last five years, warning that anyone found wanting will face the full wrath of the Law.
Governor Fintiri prays for continued peace and prosperity in Adamawa State and Nigeria, as the nation marches forward in its democratic journey.
“As we celebrate our democracy, I reaffirm our administration's commitment to providing the necessary infrastructure for sustainable development and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. We will continue to prioritize projects that improve the lives of our people and guarantee the protection of life and property, creating a prosperous and peaceful Adamawa State for all. The Governor said.
