Beware these 9 COVID-19 falsehoods that are all too common.

"Myth 1: The novel coronavirus was engineered in a lab in China.
"Myth 2: Wealthy elites intentionally spread the virus to win power and profit.
"Myth 3: COVID-19 is no worse than the flu.
"Myth 4: You don’t need to wear a mask.
"Myth 5: Hydroxychloroquine is an effective treatment.
"Myth 6: The Black Lives Matter protests led to increased transmission.
"Myth 7: Spikes in cases are because of increased testing.
"Myth 8: We can achieve herd immunity by letting the virus spread through the population.
"Myth 9: Any vaccine will be unsafe and a bigger risk than getting COVID-19."

There is no question that man-made global warming is occurring. You can be sure of this because there are two incontrovertible facts about global warming shown by direct scientific observations. These measurements are not in doubt and rely on basic settled science.

Observation 1: The atmosphere's excess CO2 is human generated

The proof for this comes from basic chemistry. There are two common isotopes of carbon found in nature, carbon-12 and carbon-14.

"Living things, like animals and trees, are in equilibrium with the atmosphere. As they eat and breathe and interact, they contain the same proportions of carbon isotopes as the atmosphere. When they die, that carbon-14 decays over a long time, and since the organism is no longer eating and breathing, no new carbon-14 comes in, and eventually the only carbon remaining is carbon-12 (and some carbon-13). Fossil fuels like oil and natural gas come from plants that died millions of years ago and have no carbon-14 left. The CO2 produced by burning fossil fuels contains only carbon-12" (Dunning).

Each year, scientists directly measure that about 15 billion tons of extra carbon-12 are added to the atmosphere. The only possible source for this is burning fossil fuels.

Observation 2: The human-generated CO2 is warming the planet

The proof for this comes from spectroscopy, a 200-year-old scientific technique. "Spectroscopy is a method of detecting elements by looking at how electromagnetic radiation passes through them. Different elements have electrons in orbits at varying energy levels, and this affects the way they resonate...."

"The Earth's surface is warmed by the sun, and as a warm globe in space, the Earth itself emits that same heat right back out, as infrared radiation. If we go outside and point a spectrometer at the sky, we can see there are peaks and valleys in the infrared spectrum. Some wavelengths of heat fly right out into space unhindered, while other wavelengths are absorbed by the atmosphere, and that heat stays there, where we're able to detect its wavelength with our spectrometer" (Dunning).

This next part is complicated but fascinating: The basic shape of the infrared (heat) spectrum is defined by water v***r. "Most of the infrared radiation that escapes the Earth goes through a window left open by water v***r, which we call the infrared window. This window in the spectrum, which is pretty wide, is centered around a wavelength of about 10 µm (microns). At higher and lower wavelengths, water v***r absorbs much of the Earth's radiated heat, so the Earth has always relied on this open window in the spectrum to allow the excess heat to escape. One end of the infrared window is overlapped by CO2's absorption range, which is centered around 15 µm. The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere acts like a sliding door which widens or narrows the infrared window. As CO2 increases, the infrared window is narrowed, less radiation escapes into space, and more heat is absorbed by the atmosphere. At the other end of the infrared window, around 7.5 µm, methane has a similar effect, contributing about 1/4 as much warming as CO2" (Dunning).

The Earth's infrared spectrum has been continuously measured from space by satellites since 1970. The measurements paint a clear picture that the infrared window is narrowing in the 15 µm range of CO2, i.e. that more heat is being trapped by the Earth's atmosphere every year, thus proving that the increased man-made CO2 is causing global warming.

The good news about global warming is that there is a simple and effective tool to fight it that won't hurt the economy. It is a carbon tax. A carbon tax gives all the people an incentive to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions that drive global warming.

"Before you counter that any new tax hurts the economy, hear how such a plan is laid out by economists not to do that. Taxing carbon emissions is not so much a new tax as it is a price correction. Carbon emission has a cost that is not already built into its price, and what that means is that it's underpriced considering its environmental impact" (Fighting Global Warming with Economics, 2020.)

The most important part, how the carbon tax won't hurt the economy, is the full 100% rebate included in it. The government gives all of the tax monies back to everyone so the tax has no net effect on the economy.

The gap between business productivity and a typical worker's compensation has been growing incredibly since 1979. The truth is it doesn't have to be this way, and it's a result of U.S. government policies.

There is no replacement for good government. The past success of the USA derived from many factors (geographic resources, good fortune in wars, exploitation of slaves and Native Americans, etc.) The future success of the USA will depend on if the government can improve its services and provide them effectively for all of the American people.

"In functioning high-income countries, the government guarantees the provision of essential goods and services: medical care, transit between cities, supplies for public schools, financial support to weather a period of unemployment. But here, the government often fails to provide them."

Only the government can scale up to meet society-wide challenges. Only the government can do the deficit spending needed to smooth over economic rough patches. Only the government can overcome class, racial, and geographic disparities to unite communities.

"The government should ... replace people’s income when a recession hits, and help businesses struggling through no fault of their own. It should guarantee simple, affordable access to medical care. It should provide child care and public education for families. And it should invest in trains and buses and classrooms." Other high-income countries in the world have succeeded in many of these areas. American greatness will be achieved if the government here can continuously improve in all these services.

"What is all the scrubbing, soaping, moisturizing, and deodorizing really doing for the body’s largest organ?"

Soap for skin became common only in the 1800's as a way to take advantage of the leftovers of the meatpacking industry. The vital innovation was to use marketing and advertising to create demand for something people didn't need before.

Now there is a "new understanding of how our skin functions: as a living, permeable 'dynamic interface' that connects us to the world around us—'a complex, diverse ecosystem' rather than a barrier that should be sterile and pristine. Soap, he reasoned, washes away not only natural oils but also many of the microorganisms that make our skin their home, disrupting the natural balance they might otherwise achieve."

"Hamblin interviews experts in immunology and microbiology who worry that, for some of us, humanity’s long-standing problem with hygiene has now reversed itself: instead of too little, we may have too much of it. These experts want us to think of hygiene more expansively—as a matter of health and balance, rather than one of sterility and purity. With all our soaps and sanitizers and antibiotics, in addition to so much time spent inside, away from dirt and animals and fresh air, we’ve created new problems for our immune systems, which miss out on the chance to encounter benign triggers and instead learn to overreact to perceived threats. Excess hygiene can also be a problem for the skin’s microbiome, which has an ecology that we’re just beginning to understand."

Cleanliness should be thought of more as a balancing act than as a war, and we are going to try to achieve better skin health by limiting the products we use, especially ones that kill microbes. We will save lots of money even if allowing our skin to have a more unmolested microbiome doesn't give greater skin health.

Obedience is not a virtue, it is a tool. Like all tools, it can be used for good or evil. Beware who is using it on you and what the effects of it are on you.

How do you know what is true? How can you judge if a statement or claim is correct?

Test 1. There is strong evidence that the claim corresponds with reality.

Test 2. The claim has not been disproved or shown to not work. (Specifically seek to disprove the claim and see if it can be disproved easily.)

Be smart! Use these 2 criteria for every important idea that comes your way.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

A couple of examples:

Example 1. Gravity — Strong evidence for it and is not ever disproved. It’s true!

Example 2. Evolutionary Biology — Strong evidence for it and is not ever disproved. It’s just as true as gravity!

+++++++++++++++++++++++

More about Test 1:

What are some things to watch out for that do not represent strong evidence, and might lead you astray?

Weak Evidence 1. Customs, traditions, or majority public opinions are not strong evidence.

Weak Evidence 2. Emotions are not strong evidence. (Note that faith is a form of emotion and thus can mislead you.)

Weak Evidence 3. Instincts and intuition are not strong evidence.

In contrast, what is strong evidence? Strong evidence is observations or experimental results that can be repeatedly confirmed by independent observers.

"There’s overwhelming evidence that the criminal justice system is racist. Here’s the proof."

This is systemic racism, aka structural racism. The criminal justice institutions, i.e. policing and imprisonment, promote racial discrimination in the U.S. regardless of the people who work in them.

The evidence is virtually undeniable that the criminal justice system needs to be changed from top to bottom in every town, county, state, and federal jurisdiction to fix this structural racism.

Evidence of discrimination in policing and profiling: 45 studies and reports

Discrimination in misdemeanors, petty crimes and driver's license suspensions: 11 studies

Discrimination in the drug war: 15 studies

Discrimination in juries and jury selection: 8 studies

Discrimination in the death penalty: 19 studies

Discrimination in prosecutors, discretion and plea bargaining: 7 studies

Discrimination in judges and sentencing: 11 studies
