Voter suppression is a strategy used to influence the outcome of an election by discouraging or preventing specific groups of people from voting. It is distinguished from political campaigning in that campaigning attempts to change likely voting behavior by changing the opinions of potential voters through persuasion and organization, activating otherwise inactive voters, or registering new supporters. Voter suppression, instead, attempts to reduce the number of voters who might vote against a candidate or proposition.

Even though the world was far from reaching gender parity before the coronavirus pandemic struck, the impact of COVID-19 on gender equality is already tangible.

According to the World Economic Forum's 2021 Global Gender Gap report, more than 135 years will be needed for countries to close the gender gap, an increase of more than 35 years from the WEF's 2020 report. Across the four sectors measured – political empowerment, economic participation, education and health – the greatest disparities are seen among political empowerment, a measure of gender parity within politics which takes into account political representation from the parliamentary level to heads of state, a gap that will take 10 years longer to close.

The last time the seven-day average of coronavirus deaths was this low was ‘in March 2020 – essentially since the pandemic began in large parts of the United States,’ according to the CDC director.

The U.S. is reporting some of the lowest coronavirus infection and death numbers the country has seen in months, and in some cases, since virtually the start of the pandemic.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, 15 states reported no daily coronavirus deaths on Monday: Idaho, Iowa, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Alabama, Ohio, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Vermont.

Over 17,700 coronavirus cases nationwide were reported on Sunday. It's the lowest daily case numbers since June 2020, according to Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Biden administration on Monday threw its support behind a police reform bill pending in the House that would ban chokeholds and overhaul qualified immunity protections for law enforcement.

"To make our communities safer, we must begin by rebuilding trust between law enforcement and the people they are entrusted to serve and protect. We cannot rebuild that trust if we do not hold police officers accountable for abuses of power and tackle systemic misconduct – and systemic racism – in police departments," the White House said in a statement urging the passage of H.R. 1280, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Brian Bernard, 54, a Republican and retired IT worker from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, said the bystander video of Floyd's death was like watching a "9-minute murder.” But he said the problem is one of a bad cop, not a bad system. Banning chokeholds or requiring retraining won't make a bad officer better, he said.

A million people signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act in less than three months since the Biden administration reopened enrollment, the White House said Tuesday, adding that the numbers reinforce the need to further expand the health care law.

"That's one million more Americans who now have the peace of mind that comes from having health insurance. One million more Americans who don't have to lie awake at night worrying about what happens if they or one of their family members gets sick," President Joe Biden said in a statement.

Biden in January signed an executive order opening a special enrollment period for the federal insurance marketplace. The order allowed people to sign up or change their health insurance plan outside of the annual open enrollment period or a qualifying life change in the 36 states that use the marketplace.

Infighting within the Republican party is set to come to a head this week, goaded on by the ghostly figure of former president Donald Trump in his Mar-a-Lago hideout in Florida.

House Republicans are gearing up to oust Liz Cheney on Wednesday from her position as the party’s number three leader in the chamber.

Her removal would come as punishment for her public criticism of Trump with regard to his role in inciting the 6 January Capitol insurrection and his “big lie” that last year’s presidential election was stolen from him.

Cheney was one of 10 Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching Trump for “incitement of insurrection”.

Dramatic protests that unsettled the nation after the murder of George Floyd in police custody have triggered quiet but growing backlash from state Republican lawmakers who are now pushing legislation to crack down on public demonstrations.

At least 90 bills targeting protests have been introduced across 35 states since last May, according to the nonpartisan International Center for Not-for-Profit Law which has been tracking the legislation.

The number was way below what economists had predicted.

Employers added a paltry 266,000 jobs in April, hundreds of thousands below what most experts had predicted.

The number for March was revised downward from its previous 916,000 to 770,000, according to the report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. February's number, however, was revised upward to 536,000 from its prior reading of 468,000. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, rose a notch to 6.1%.

Gains in the hospitality and local government were offset by declines in temporary help and courier and messenger services. Economists had predicted a number close to or above 1 million.

Donald Trump will have to stick to written statements and media appearances to raise money and spread his messages – social media is broadly still not an option, at least for now.

Facebook's decision to maintain its ban on Trump again deprives the ex-president of a long-range megaphone and an effective fundraising machine, elements that would be central to Trump-backed campaigns in the 2022 congressional races and, perhaps, the 2024 presidential race.

"Should he decide to run again in 2024 it will make it difficult for him to mount a cheap online campaign – as he has done in the past – and make it difficult for him to gain new supporters," said Jennifer Mercieca, a political communications specialist at Texas A&M University.

Trump and aides indicated they would follow through on plans to start a social media platform, but provided few details. They expect Twitter and other social media platforms to follow Facebook's lead and maintain their bans on Trump as well.
