James recommends the new thriller in theaters, STRANGE DARLING. "Strange Darling is a Tarantino-esque thrill ride that takes the classic cat-and-mouse killer vs final girl trope, but updates it with a devilishly fresh spin. Shot on 35 mm film, this film is visually gorgeous with a vintage feel punctuated by a stellar score, soundtrack, and sound design."

"Disney Cast Members, guests and animal lovers celebrate the birth of the second gorilla in one month for the family of critically endangered western lowland gorillas at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida. Born on this day to mother Kashata and father Gino, the healthy infant joins another male gorilla who was born August 7 to Azizi and Gino. This second baby is a welcome addition to the growing gorilla family that inhabits the wooded sanctuary of the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail at Disney's Animal Kingdom."

The Animal Hero of the Week is a mama duck that stayed by her ducklings who had fallen into a storm drain. She got a passerby's attention and they successfully reunited the family.

On this day in 1970...
"A bizarre occurrence takes place at Disneyland when 750 "Hippies" and "Radical Yippies" infiltrate the park, and take over the Wilderness Fort. They raise the Vietcong flag and pass reefers out to passersbys. Later, they march in a Main Street parade, and sing their own lyrics to "Zipadee Doo Dah" ("Ho, Ho, Ho Chi Mihn is going to win..."). More conservative park guests try to drown them out by singing "America the Beautiful." Before the confrontation can heat up, a platoon of Anaheim Police officers in full riot gear pour into the park from backstage areas! A riot is adverted and Disneyland vice president of Operations Dick Nunis orders the park closed at 7:10 PM. For many years afterward Disneyland will selectively enforced a "dress code" at the park, occasionally refusing admission to "long-haired hippies". (This unusual incident is the only time an outside security force has ever made a full-blown public appearance at the park.)"

James recommends the new thriller LONGLEGS. "FBI Agent Lee Harker is assigned to an unsolved serial killer case that takes an unexpected turn, revealing evidence of the occult. Harker discovers a personal connection to the killer and must stop him before he strikes again."
The Animal Hero of the Week is a corgi that snuck into their neighbor's farm (emphasis on NEIGH) to ride their mini-pony! What a champion.

"A letter written on this day to Walt Disney from Chester Feitel indicates the level of security surrounding some of the military projects undertaken at the Studio. The letter references a training film on aerial gunnery tactics for the U.S. Navy. (The U.S. is in the midst of World War II.)
The letter includes these words: "Navy insists I re-emphasize the CONFIDENTIAL nature of this project. It should be discussed with only those whom you would be justified to entrust with work upon it. All correspondence should be destroyed or retained in safe, confidential files.""

"Walt Disney's Snow White wrap party - also known as Walt's Field Day - is held at the Norconian Hotel in Norco, California, for the next 2 days. A 7-page program (handed
out to all guests) is notable for an illustration of Mickey Mouse on the cover playing golf. Drawn by Ward Kimball,
it is the first appearance of Mickey with black pupils. Food and activity expenses are on the Disney Studio tab, though guests have to pay for their own alcohol and hotel rooms."

"The It's A Small World attraction (direct from the World's Fair) opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland. The interior boat ride (sponsored by Bank of America) features 297 animated children, 256 toys, a canal filled with 233,000 gallons of water, and of course the famous song 'It's a small world (after all)' written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman (RIP). It is the park's first continually loading high capacity ride. The day is marked by special ceremonies attended by Walt Disney himself. Advertising manager Jack Lindquist has had jugs of water taken from rivers, lakes and oceans around the world brought in for the ceremony (to add to the moat)."

Sarah recommends the intriguing series, DROPS OF GOD. "Alexandre Léger, creator of the famous Léger Wine Guide and a leading figure in oenology, has passed away at the age of 60. In order to claim his immense inheritance, his daughter travels to Tokyo and must face a young oenologist."
James recommends you go see KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES for a dumb good time, but more importantly he recommends the prequel series to BREAKING BAD, BETTER CALL SAUL. "He wasn't always Saul Goodman, ace attorney for chemist-turned-meth dealer Walter White. Six years before he begins to represent Albuquerque's most notorious criminal, Goodman is Jimmy McGill, a small-time attorney hustling to make a name for himself. He's a forceful champion for his low-income clients, an underdog whose morals and ambitions often clash. Jimmy works with private eye Mike Ehrmantraut, a former Philadelphia cop and recent transplant to the Southwest. Mike has a specialized skill set -- he's a "fixer" of sticky situations -- that Jimmy soon learns to appreciate."
