STEPHANIE URBINA JONES & THE H***Y TONK MARIACHI ANNOUNCE THE OCT. 20 RELEASE OF MANUEL’S DESTINY
https://www.newyorknewsjournal.com/stephanie-urbina-jones-the-h***y-tonk-mariachi-announce-the-oct-20-release-of-manuels-destiny/

Nashville, TN – Sept. 20, 2023 — The latest offering from Stephanie Urbina Jones & The H***y Tonk Mariachi, Manuel’s Destiny, goes far beyond the limits of the typical album: it’s a saga, a joyride, an impassioned reclamation of her cultural heritage, and—above all—a riveting tribute to the power of a dream to travel over 100 years and three generations. From her great-grandfather crossing the border, to an artist living and telling a transcendent story, and ultimately living Manuel’s Destiny. The album will be released October 20. (2023 Global Eyes Entertainment, LP/ Casa Del Rio Records)

Over the course of 11 wildly dazzling songs, the Texas-bred, Nashville/Mexico-based singer/songwriter sets her storytelling to a one-of-a-kind sound she’s created and calls “H***y-Tonk Mariachi”—a gorgeously orchestrated fusion of her Mexican roots and San Antonio, TX Hill Country upbringing.

The album is centered in the stunning vocal prowess she’s shown in touring across the globe, sharing the stage with legends like Willie Nelson, and making history as the first artist ever to perform with mariachi at the Grand Ole Opry. The result is the most revelatory work yet by a truly visionary artist, one that leaves the listener newly emboldened to fearlessly follow their hearts and live a dreamer’s tale.

Like a bird in the sky with his heart open wide

And the faith to fly

Like an unbridled horse on an uncharted course to a better life

With hope in his soul his Corazón made of gold

He believed he could do anything

That was the story they told when I left home at twenty years old

“Manuel’s Destiny”– Stephanie Urbina Jones

For Urbina Jones, the making of such an ambitious and all-encompassing album took decades of soul-searching and careful excavation of her family’s history. A period of Urbina Jones’ life carried a heavy burden of pain. “I was told to hide the fact that I was Mexican, which haunted me for a very long time,” she says. At age 18, Urbina Jones made her first trip to Mexico and immediately felt a profound sense of revelation. “I finally realized, ‘This is who I am.’ From that moment on, the direction of my life changed. I became passionate about telling a new story celebrating my roots. My pain turned into my passion and purpose.”

As she unraveled her family’s history, Urbina Jones learned of her great-grandfather, Manuel Anaya Urbina. “Once I discovered his story, I became passionate about the idea of this dreamer crossing the border to follow his heart. I feel as if his dream has lived on through me, and now I want to share it as a source of inspiration for anyone seeking their own divine truth,” states Urbina Jones.

Produced by Urbina Jones and Preston Sullivan, and recorded live at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas—not far from where her great-grandfather crossed into El Paso, Manuel’s Destiny’s resplendent selection of heart-on-sleeve ballads, hip-swinging Texican Americana anthems, and pedal steel-laced country-rock songs, ultimately radiates an electrifying energy, adding even greater impact to the countless pieces of wisdom woven into her lyrics.

The first single and video, “Rhinestone Cowgirl,” is a triumphant update of Glen Campbell’s iconic “Rhinestone Cowboy” (with a blessing from songwriter Larry Weiss on the cover’s gender flip). The single is a duet with multi-talented vocalist Wendy Moten. In addition to working with iconic artists such as Julio Iglesias, Moten is also a member of the Grammy-winning group, The Time Jumpers, and was a runner-up on The Voice.

With the song, “Falling Fearlessly,” Manuel’s Destiny slips into a “Blue Bayou” romantic mood and spotlights the subtler nuances of Jones’ beguiling voice. Co-written with Peggy Lynn (daughter of Loretta Lynn), the lilting and luminous track finds backup vocals by music legend Vince Gill (appears courtesy of MCA Nashville) supporting Urbina Jones to capture the rarefied magic of surrendering to love. “It’s my homage to Linda Ronstadt, who’s one of the few Latinas I had to look up to in country rock music.”

The album also features a song with the Bellamy Brothers. A mash-up of “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)” and “Let Your Love Flow,” these two hit songs reflect a coming of age during Urbina Jones’ early years. “I was lucky to grow up in Luckenbach and the h***y tonks of Texas during the Outlaw movement. My favorite song to sing along to was “Let Your Love Flow,” comments Urbina Jones. “I had the honor of touring in Europe with the Bellamys, and was thrilled they agreed to re-record their song with my H***y Tonk Mariachi,” she adds.

As Urbina Jones reflects on this album, “It’s amazing to me that over a hundred years later, Manuel’s great-granddaughter could come back to the same border with a seed of the dream he planted from so long ago,” she says. “It tells me that our dreams are by divine design. I hope that in sharing this album I’m able to bring a little joy, big magic, and some dancing to the world, as well as inspire someone to ask the big questions—to be brave, believe in themselves, and in their dreams. Within our hearts lies the map to our destiny.”

Keturah Allgood highlights love and compassion in new album ‘Shine’
https://www.newyorknewsjournal.com/keturah-allgood-highlights-love-and-compassion-in-new-album-shine/

Hi everyone! My name is Keturah Allgood. I suppose if I had to sum myself up in a few words, I would say that I am a Soulful Americana troubadour. I write the songs, play the songs, sing the songs, and hope that the music will bring you some sort of peace in this terribly chaotic world. I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina with my fiancé, my mom, my guitars, and keyboards. I live in the house I grew up in and my studio is in my old bedroom filled with tons of records and a massive CD collection that I absolutely refuse to get rid of.

Tell us about your new album Shine, and the inspiration behind it.

Shine was a record that I wrote to hopefully bring some peace and healing to a fearful and chaotic world. I wanted to highlight love and compassion. I believe that the simple act of kindness and being good to one another has the ability to change the world.

I feel like the album really takes the listener on a journey into my heart.

What was the songwriting and recording process?

The songwriting process is always different. Some of the songs on this album I wrote in 30 minutes, and some, like “Down the Line,” for instance, took years. I believe that particular song took me about 18 years to finish. I think I needed to live a little more before I could figure out exactly what I wanted to say. The album was recorded at Omni Sound Studios in Nashville, TN, produced by William Gawley and co-produced by Pat McGrath. We recorded during the pandemic in August of 2020. I had an amazing group of musicians largely due to the fact that they were doing session work instead of touring during Covid. Everything was recorded in Nashville except for the backing vocals which I decided to take back home with me and record with Brad Rudolph at Falling Waters Studio in Pisgah Forest, NC. I had my good friend and fellow musician Carrie Morrison lend her angelic voice to the majority of the harmony vocals, and then I roped in my duo partner and music director Bradford Carson to help with the rest. I feel like the album really takes the listener on a journey into my heart.

What do you hope your fans/listeners take away with them when they listen to your music?

My sincere hope is that people will listen to the words and believe that we really do have the power within us to create a better world. There are songs like “Sing, Baby, Sing” where I hope people find encouragement and know that no matter what they are told by people who just want to keep them down that they are worthy of loving themselves enough to believe they can achieve their dreams. The title track “Shine” simply states that “light wins out over darkness every time.” I suppose if there were one message I would want this album to convey, it would be that there is always hope and that love is the ultimate answer.

When did you first pick up guitar, and what drew you to that instrument?

I’ve been playing guitar since I was very young. I must have been maybe seven or eight when I got my first real guitar. My father played guitar and was my first teacher. I think the first song he taught me was “Last Kiss.” It’s that terrible tragic song about two young lovers and a horrific car accident. It’s an awful story but the melody is beautiful. I really didn’t take guitar seriously until I was about 15. Even then, I would just go to my guitar teacher and make him show me how to play the songs that I was writing in my head. I never really learned how to properly play. I play a lot of partial chords and do weird things that drive my bandmates crazy. It works for me, however, and even though a part of me wishes I had been more disciplined and forced myself to learn the more traditional way, I am pretty happy with where this crooked road has taken me.

Who are some of your musical influences?

I really love early blues artists like Ma Rainy and Bessie Smith. Gospel powerhouses like Mahalia Jackson and Vestal Goldman. Those women really gave me a sense of how to sing from the gut. Songwriters like Ferron and Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, and the Indigo Girls really turned me on with their words. Currently, I’ve been jamming to Joy Oladokun and Valerie June. I’m also looking forward to hearing Lucinda Williams’s new record. The three tracks I have heard so far are spectacular. She just blows me away with her tenacity.

What’s next?

I am going out on the road in support of this record, and I already have another album on my mind. It’s been 17 years between the release of my first record and my second one, so I am eager to just keep putting the music out there!

Ella Collier Releases Wicked New Single “I THINK I MIGHT”
https://www.newyorknewsjournal.com/ella-collier-releases-wicked-new-single-i-think-i-might/

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, pop artist, and powerhouse vocalist Ella Collier recently released the final single, “I THINK I MIGHT,” a call-out song, emphasizing the desire to take control, get a bit of revenge, and perhaps burn it all to the ground.

Talking about the song, Collier shares, “Have you ever been called crazy by a lover, or lack thereof? Well, I’m about to show you just how crazy I can get.”

“I THINK I MIGHT” is from Collier’s forthcoming EP, SECOND ARROW, slated to drop October 13. To celebrate the release, Collier will be headlining the Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on October 12.

Originally from Atlanta, Collier writes, records, and performs her captivating music, merging elements of pop, trap, EDM, and hyperpop into potent works of art.

Collier began singing at the age of seven, followed by musical theatre. Seeing Taylor Swift on Ellen inspired Collier to start writing her own songs, beginning with a song called “For You.” At first, she performed in her basement and then branched out to perform at venues like the Bluebird Café and Nashville’s Listening Room.

Since then, Collier has gone from “just a girl with an acoustic guitar and an open mic” to inclusion on myriads of Spotify playlists, more than one hundred thousand streams, and stylish music videos.

“I THINK I MIGHT” rolls out on low, warped tones flowing into a mid-tempo powerful rhythm topped by dark, shuddering surfaces, giving the tune wicked, calculating flavors as Collier’s voice, dripping with hints of Siren-like sass, mischief, and defiance, narrates her probable radical reactions to betrayal.

“I think I might / Just out of spite / Throw a little party just for you … / What a surprise! / And I’ll invite / Call up all your exes / Rendezvous.”

At once visceral and deliciously naughty, “I THINK I MIGHT” conveys raw passions, revealed through the exquisite timbres of the voice of Ella Collier.

Review: Tascam’s Portacapture X6 and X8 Recorders Are Ideal for Acoustic Guitar—and a Whole Lot More
https://www.newyorknewsjournal.com/review-tascams-portacapture-x6-and-x8-recorders-are-ideal-for-acoustic-guitar-and-a-whole-lot-more/

As with all things digital, recording technology has seen great advancements in recent years. An excellent case in point is the Portacapture series of high-resolution handheld recorders offered by Tascam, the same company that revolutionized home recording through its Portastudio, the first multitrack cassette recorder, which debuted in 1979. I checked out the Portacapture X8 and its streamlined sibling, the X6, and was as impressed by their ease of use as their excellent sonics and ability to capture wide dynamic ranges.

Packed with Features

Similar in concept to portable recorders like Zoom’s H6 and H8 and Sony’s PCM-D10, both the X6 (on sale for $299 street at press time) and the X8 ($399) include a pair of condenser microphones and are housed in sturdy plastic enclosures with the same sort of touchscreen interface found on many smartphones. The models work similarly, but there are some key differences: The X6’s 10mm mics are built in and can be rotated into a true X-Y or A-B pattern, while the X8’s 14.6mm duo detaches to form those same configurations. On the X6 there are two XLR mic/line inputs, compared to four XLR/TRS combo jacks on the X8. The X6 has a 3.5-inch LCD color display, vs. a 2.4-inch screen on the X6.

Tascam Portacapture X6

Though both Portacapture devices offer manual settings for those with more recording experience, they boast a suite of apps tailored to specific uses—podcasting, different types of instruments, field recording, voice, and ASMR, with the X8 adding a handy tuner and metronome. Neither has internal storage, and for remote recordings where you don’t have a separate computer or DAW you can use an optional microSD card of up to 512GB. Each Portacapture can operate wirelessly via Bluetooth with an optional adapter and can be mounted to any tripod with a quarter-inch thread.

In Use

It’s very intuitive to find the appropriate app from the Portacapture’s onscreen menu and start recording. Using several different-sounding guitars—a Collings OM1 A SB Traditional, Kenny Hill signature nylon-string, and Solomon Phidelity archtop—I tried the preset optimized for acoustic guitar. With their HDDA mic preamps and high resolution, both units captured the character of these instruments in surprisingly vivid and lifelike ways.

Tascam Portacapture X8

I especially appreciate the recorders’ 32-bit floating recording technology, which allows for a massive dynamic range—a real game changer. You needn’t worry about clipping from a loud sound source or noisiness when trying to record quiet sounds. In other words, setting the recording level is pretty much irrelevant—ideal if you’re an inexperienced recordist or, say, one who tracked an inspired performance but forgot to first check the recording level.

Similarly convenient are the recorders’ onboard effects. The acoustic guitar mode, for instance, features a handful of reverb types from large hall to plate, so you can dial in a recording without having to transfer it to external recording software. That said, the recorders can also double as USB audio interfaces for those who require postproduction flexibility, and this of course removes the need for a microSD card.

The Bottom Line

Though I barely scratched the surface of what the Portacapture X6 and X8 can deliver, it is obvious that these recorders are convenient and powerful tools for acoustic guitarists, providing professional-quality sound with a minimum of fuss. Whether you’re a seasoned recordist or a newbie, a Portacapture might be just what you need for capturing your music whenever—and wherever—inspiration strikes. tascam.com

VMLY&R employee giving program surpasses $3M milestone
https://www.newyorknewsjournal.com/vmlyr-employee-giving-program-surpasses-3m-milestone/

WEBWIRE – Thursday, September 21, 2023

Earlier this year, the VMLY&R Foundation celebrated a wonderful milestone, surpassing the $3 million mark in collective charitable contributions since its inception in 2005. This achievement was made possible thanks to the abundant generosity of VMLY&R employees who participate in the U.S. employee giving program through payroll giving.

VMLY&R Foundation participants have exclusive access to two primary charitable financial benefits:

The opportunity to request an unrestricted financial grant for a nonprofit organization that holds a personal connection for the employee.

A $2 to $1 matching gift benefit, effectively tripling the impact of Foundation members personal philanthropic efforts.

Each year, employees direct hundreds of charitable donations in the form of unrestricted grants and matching gifts. Every organization receiving a donation is recommended by a Foundation member, and the list of causes continues to grow each year.

In addition to our ongoing support for employee-directed giving, the VMLY&R Foundation proudly partners with VMLY&Rs equality, inclusion and belonging (EI&B) imperative. Additionally, there are special matching gift programs that address timely matters such as natural disasters, humanitarian aid and employee resource group (ERG) initiatives.

Most recently, the Foundation launched two global special matching campaigns:

Together for Ukraine, a global crowdfunding drive for our colleagues based in Ukraine.

Support for Maui, a fundraising partnership with the B.EAST ERG providing aid to the Hawaii wildfire relief efforts.

Together, these efforts raised tens of thousands of dollars and exemplify our commitment to making a positive impact on the world around us through the power of peer-to-peer giving.

The VMLY&R Foundation also guides year-round programming. Every full-time VMLY&R employee has 16 hours of paid community service time to use each year, in addition to our agencys global day of service, VMLY&R Worldwide Foundation Day. Each office also donates time and talent to support pro bono initiatives big and small.
