The Australian Jobs Report is out and it’s not all doom and gloom.

Talks of a recession are yet to spook the market. Employment across the country rose 0.3% in the September quarter.

While latest data indicates the market is beginning to settle, employers are still hiring at near record levels.

It’s raining jobs in New Zealand. The latest Jobs Report is out and reveals that permanent and flexible vacancies are soaring.

The comprehensive data is indicating market confidence despite talks of a recession.

The National Index has risen 3.9% in the September quarter… a big comeback after falling by 8.8% last quarter.

The New Zealand Jobs Report for the June Quarter saw a substantial fall in job opportunities in healthcare. Whilst this is surprising, it is suspected that this is due to employers resisting the temptation to advertise a job that they see little prospect in filling.

The Public Sector saw the most growth in job vacancies this quarter, with opportunities rising by 19.2%. This is most likely the result of a change in government and the need to recalibrate workforces across the large number of new electorate and ministerial offices, as well as government departments, to better support what this Government intends to achieve. With the new Albanese Government shirking the use of recruitment, labour-hire, and external consulting services, it will be one to watch as to whether these roles will be filled amidst the skills and labour crisis.

In last Quarter’s New Zealand Jobs Report, a particularly buoyant jobs market was depicted in Wellington. This was short lived. Demand peaked in January and has slipped in each successive month. Whilst it may appear that the market is “shrinking”, opportunities in the region have near doubled since 2018.

Despite the demand for talent slipping this quarter, businesses in New Zealand are continuing to report that finding staff remains a big problem. To address this, employers shifting towards permanent engagement to ‘lock in’ talent. This was reflected in the most Jobs Report with flexible opportunities falling 2% more than permanent jobs.

Following some of the harshest lockdowns in the world in 2021, Victoria has made a remarkable economic recovery, with job vacancies growing 31.1% year-on-year. This is in comparison to New South Wales, which only experienced a 4.3% increase.

Demand for Business Professionals in New Zealand slipped 12.8% in the June quarter, reflecting the general cautiousness in the face of greater economic challenges facing businesses and consumers. For context though, opportunities in this occupation are 53.9% higher than in mid-2020.
