On set at today - trying to create an outdoor patio look in a studio. We’ve recently relocated to Utah, and with that transition many of my projects have had their timelines extended. Stay tuned for updates on the PORTAL documentary!

I filmed my wife and I this weekend for our behind the scenes piece! 3 cameras, 2 boom mics, and 1 light. As I’ve been putting this together, I’ve been realizing more and more that my topic is shifting from a simple behind the scenes to a more specific focus on the cost of filmmaking as a career. Choosing to pursue this path has had a range of consequences for our family, and one of the tougher ones is the effect it has on our work/life balance. I think this is likely true of all careers in a creative field, but I’ve found that it can be really easy to get sucked into film and video and suddenly that’s all you think about. You become consumed. There’s a certain amount of competitiveness and comparing that goes on among filmmakers, and I find that there can be a feeling of not being “enough.” This manifests itself in taking on more projects than you can handle in a healthy way, buying more gear than you can afford, etc. As I’ve been editing and interviewing I think I want to zoom in to this particular topic, while still detailing some of the behind the scenes on my short film. In short, I want to explore how the life of film and video can be balanced with the other important parts of life, like family. If this is something anyone would be interested in, comment below. I’d love some feedback on this direction I’m taking.

TLDR: My short film PORTAL is coming along nicely, more BTS and a short documentary coming soon!

Hey folks! I haven’t been posting much lately, things have been really busy. I’ve had a number of projects all in the pipeline, and so the passion projects I normally share here have been coming along a little more slowly than usual. One of those passion projects, a short film called PORTAL, has been in post-production for a few months. Slowly but surely it’s coming along, and I’m really excited about where we are at with it. The goal is to have it complete by the end of the year. I’ve documented the process pretty thoroughly, and I’ll be sharing a lot more behind the scenes content in the near future. In fact, I’m going to continue documenting this process and ultimately create a short documentary piece that will hopefully reflect the ins and outs of this production, the successes and setbacks, and all the many things we learned. On that note, please send me any questions you might have about making a short film in general or about our process specifically. With this short documentary I want to directly address those who are aspiring or beginner filmmakers, and who want to jump into making short films themselves. The more I understand what questions you guys might have, the more I can tailor this content for you. This was my first serious short film, and the lessons learned have been numerous. We are just beginning to plan out how this Doc will look, but we’re excited to share more with all of you. Stay tuned!

And that’s a wrap! Just wanted to share a sneak peek at what I’m working on and give a huge shoutout to the INCREDIBLE, hard-working, mega-talented group of pros that was our cast and crew on this shoot. I’m in their debt, and I can’t wait to show off what we’ve created together.

One thing that has been a recurring lesson for me while working in video is BE PREPARED.

I used to think that showing up on set without a solid plan might foster more creativity or spontaneity, but I've found over and over again that I am more creative when I have a plan to work off of. Conversely, when I don't have a solid plan, a lot more of my time is spent scrambling and a lot less of it is spent coming up with creative solutions.

That doesn't mean I always stick to the plan (I often don't or can't, due to unforeseen complications). But having a plan to fall back on creates a more secure environment, an environment within which you can feel more empowered to experiment. My mantra has become something along the lines of, "Prepare so that your shoot could be run without you, then show up to set willing to willing to try anything."

On that note, here are some screengrabs of some of the software I've been using lately both to prepare for shoots and to explore ideas. Another habit I've picked up lately is finding a shot that I wasn't particularly proud of, and then recreating that in previs software so I can experiment and learn how I could have done it better.
