that baboons share a 94% genetic similarity with humans?

After the great apes, baboons are the most closely related species to humans. This means, that they share several behaviors and characteristics that are similar to ours!

One of them are their communication skills. They consist of vocalizations, facial expressions, body attitudes and touch. Here are some tips to identify how a baboon is feeling, based on its facial expression:

- Raising the eyebrows and showing the whites of the eyes is used to show displeasure.
-Pulling the mouth back, making it look like a wide grin means they are scared, or fearful of something. In most cases, this face is made after suffering agression.
-Baring the canine teeth is used to threat someone, either a predator, a member of the troop, a dispersing male or a human.

Next time you see baboons, make sure to keep a safe distance from them, and don't disturb them.😁

Hi there, everybody! 2021 is tomorrow, and we're gonna celebrate as much as we can!🐵😃

We invite you to celebrate along with us from anywhere in the world, and spread the word so more people can celebrate these beautiful animals.

Conserving baboons is very important to us, especially because of the role they play in it. We will do a series of posts sharing some fun facts about baboons before December 3rd.

Hope you enjoy and learn with us!😄 Thanks to Di Ruthenberg for these fun facts and Rose Hutchinson for the idea! Thanks for supporting this celebration and loving baboons!💚🐒

Fun Fact: There are 5 species of baboons distributed across Africa.

Hamadryas baboons live in the Horn of Africa and the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula. These are the only baboons native to Asia.

Olive baboons are the most widespread of all baboons, living in 25 countries from Mali to Ethiopia. They are also called Anubis baboons.🐒

Chacma baboons live in Southern Africa and are one of the biggest species of baboons, along with the Hamadryas baboons.

Yellow baboons are found in Eastern Africa and coexist with Olive baboons in the same environment. Their yellowish coat is their most characteristic feature.

Guinea baboons have the smallest range, living just in 6 Western African countries. Loss of habitat and small range has made this species to be considered Near Threatened by the IUCN.

I must add, that there's a sixth species of baboon, that was recently recognized as such, the Kinda baboon. It inhabits Central Africa and because of it's recent recognition as full species, is the least studied species of baboon.🐵

Today’s interactive activities of course expand to include some monkey-themed crafts, too. Curated by our Early Childhood Specialists these activities are geared for young children with a focus on literacy, arts, music, movement, and science with materials you have at home.

Another lovely photo of a baboon!

This time, we'll be talking about... Hamadryas Baboons! (Papio hamadryas)

Hamadryas Baboons are the commonest species of baboon in captivity but also, one of the most beautiful!

Their range extends from the Horn of Africa to the Southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Hence, they are the northernmost baboon species. Because for their range, they are used to live in a variety of habitats like semidesert areas, savannahs and cliffs. They depend on cliffs for sleeping and finding water.

Hamadryas Baboons have a complex hierarchical society, which many say is the third most complex after humans and great apes. Hamadryas Baboon hierarchy is even more unique, because they have a strictly patriarchal hierarchy, while most baboon and macaque species have matriarchal hierarchies.

They breed in every season of the year, with dominant males breeding with females from his harem and protecting them from other males who might copulate and challenge the dominant male. The parenting is done by the females which groom and care for their babies, the dominant male protects the young and females.

Fun Fact: Ancient Egyptians believed that Hamadryas Baboons were a deity, representing the dead and commanded by the Hamadryas Baboon Babi, which means Chief of the Baboons. Thanks to these beliefs, they also receive the name of Sacred Baboon.
