JOURNALIST BODIES CONDEMN ATTACK ON JOURNALIST AHMER SHAHEEN
Veteran investigative journalist and editor Ahmer Shaheen has released the details of a horrendous attack on him in which attackers stopped his vehicle, fired at him, injured him and snatched his laptop containing sensitive news related data.
Local and international journalist bodies have demanded that this attack be investigated and the journalist and his family be provided urgent security.
In a statement, the program director for the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Martinez de la Serna said:
“The attacks against journalists Ayaz Amir and Ahmer Shaheen underscore the significant dangers facing members of the press in Pakistan, which must be urgently addressed by the country’s new government,”.
He added that ““Pakistan authorities must spare no effort in investigating the attacks against Amir and Shaheen, ensuring the safety, and holding the perpetrators accountable.””
The president of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists PFUJ, Shahzada Zulfiqar and secretary general Nasir Zaidi, in a press release, said that it was a matter of grave concern that armed men not only attacked Shaheen wounding him but managed to escape as well after snatching his laptop that contains crucial data. "This happened days after attempts were exposed to buy politicians and their loyalties."
The two leaders of the journalist fraternity PFUJ said that Shaheen is a senior journalist who has vast experience of working on investigative stories.
The president of the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors Kazam Khan, condemned the attack on Ahmer Shaheen and strongly demanded that the federal, provincial governments and state institutions provide security to journalists and their families through a press release. He further added that “I am hopeful that this violence, firing and threats will never be able to stop this revolutionary young journalist just like his father”.
Senior Journalist and anchor Hamid Mir called for justice for the attacked journalist. He tweeted “Powerful people including are ignoring him because he is an independent journalist. He was not supporting any political party. He needs justice.”
Ahmer Shaheen has vowed that after a short break, he will come back stronger and continue his journalistic work, starting with exposing those who have attacked him.
