Amazing uplifting show by @alabaster_deplume in Brooklyn a few weekends back at the dope @publicrecordsnyc venue. This is the type of energy we all need in 2022. The Lounge was able to get a pressing of the new album and it does not disappoint. Remember that we are all precious and doing the best we can with music continuing and to guide the way!
Beginnings:::It’s always interesting to examine the early days of an artist’s development before they’ve fully formed their “identity.” Especially when it’s an artists as singular as Alice Coltrane…
Loungers, most likely, need no introduction to Alice Coltrane. Sampled here is Alice McLeod in 1960, a few years before meeting John Coltrane, performing on French television while in Lucky Thompson’s band.

Heavy Rotation: “Ever since Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim formed the Jazz Epistles in the 1950s, South Africa’s jazz musicians have reworked the American genre. The country’s sound combines the chromaticism of bebop with a deeply-swung lope; within its economy of phrasing lay anthemic melodies. Multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Jiyane sits squarely within this tradition.. His anticipated debut as a bandleader, Umdali, is at first glance a minimal affair, running to five tracks and 45 minutes. Yet it channels the subtle depth familiar from the music of Ibrahim, as if pulling at silk threads to unravel a tapestry. -The Guardian

Hayden Pedigo’s (@amarillohighway ) “Letting Go” has been on heavy rotation at the Lounge. Pedigo released both “Letting Go” and “Big Tex, Here We Come” in 2021. “Big Tex, Here We Come” is a collaboration between Pedigo and Andrew Weathers.
One of the Lounge fellas attended Pedigo’s NYC debut at @babysallright.
Check out a clip from that performance.

Season 2 Episode 3 is live! During the Last Call segment things get a little spicy. A bunch of No Sips and a conversation about the overall theory and concept of music criticism. The boys get meta about their own show parameters. What a mess…
Tune in to hear more and then you be the judge.

Been on a bit of a “Northern Soul” kick recently. Those UK kids in the 70s really knew how to bust a move to those funky, soulful, deep cut tracks that they were diggin’ up. Such a cool scene and, of course, ripping tunes.
Get diggin’ and get dancin’

Many believe that if Dorothy Love Coates decided to “crossover” to more commercial, pop oriented music that she would have been as “successful” as Aretha Franklin.
This powerful sample of Love Coates and The Gospel Harmonettes sure makes a compelling case. So much intensity.

Album Anticipation: Buffalo Nichols self-titled debut album, releasing on October 15th, launches with the lead single “Lost and Lonesome” (featured here).
Excerpt First Avenue interview: “Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Buffalo Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future?…“Part of my intent, making myself more comfortable with this release, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues,” guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Carl “Buffalo” Nichols explains. “Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.”
Mark your calendars.

Steady Listening: Since it’s release on June 25th, Amaro Freita’s album, Sankofa, has been on constant repeat. With the help of Jean Elton (bass) and Hugo Medeiros (drums), who have formed the Amaro Freitas Trio since the very beginning, Amaro employs intricate rhythmic patterns and time-signature variations as if reimagining the ancient designs of his ancestors, and every track is imbued with a message or a story Amaro is compelled to tell.
