Created in the Cedar Room during the days leading up to a weekend in the upstate NY woods. Eclectic set of tunes highlighting themes of hope, renewal, reflection and the movements of life. Knee-bending accapella, disciples of Coltrane, wayward folk singers, haunted reggae and a bit more. All tracks pulled from the NGL record collection. ~~link in stories and on Mixcloud page~~~

~~Madlib’s Favorite “Rock” Band~~Embryo’s discography is varied and vast. The connective tissue is a yearning for sonic exploration and an sense of cultural appreciation. Recorded in Lagos in 1985, Africa is a heavily percussive and hypnotic record that was released further down the line in their discography.

If you’ve been kicking around The Lounge the last few days, you would have stumble across a story highlighting Embryo’s 2021 album. Marja Burchard, daughter of founding member Christian Burchard, carried her father torch and released the album AUF AUF with the support of Madlib and Egon.

For Those Who Chant: Grab hold of this one anyway you can. Heard to it referred to as “a lost Santana record” due to the fact that you have most of Carlos Santana’s band present on this album. The lineup is, indeed, stellar. Joe Henderson, Sanatana, Stanley Clark, Hadley Caliman, Coke Escovedo, someone named Cosmic Dog playing “moon” and more.

There’s been conversation around the Lounge about In A Silent Way by Miles Davjs, so it was fitting to read a review for this album by Jazzwise stating “Think of it as a direct descendant of In A Silent Way, but with a lysergic twist and Miles’s tentative phrases replaced by Gasca’s brash, sassy blasts.” We love those connections here at The Lounge.

Beverly Glenn-Copeland~10.5.24~Opus 40, Saugerties NY::: We spent three days camping out in the Saugerties. The primary driver was to see some music. We were beyond fortunate to come across three remarkable shows at three magnificent venues. See the previous post for the other two shows. Featured here was the last set of shows ever by Beverly Glenn-Copeland. The “Evening Salon” was a fun night of music, conversation, poetry and more. The setting could not have been more perfect. Just look at those pictures…

“We want Nina! We want Nina!”:: Some days call for the legends. This album is legendary. The High Priestess of Soul sits squarely in the legendary category and she makes her way with some legendary tunes on her 1972 album, Emergency Ward. Nina stretches out George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” into a medley by interweaving a powerful poem by David Nelson. Closing out the album is another classic Harrison tune, “Isn’t it a Pity.” If that isn’t enough to send you over the edge, the album is produced by Weldon Irvine (legend!) and he arranged and conducted the choral arrangement.

Also, let’s here if for 1972. It can’t be overstated the amount of world shaking music that was released that year.

The Case for Trios Pt. II: “Most of this recording was made during a single early evening in Southern California, outdoors, with the San Bernardino Mountains in view.”

Long time Loungers know we have a deep respect for Sam Wilkes, with a heavy love for his collaborations with Sam Gendel. Here, we have Sam teamed up with Craig Weinrib playing trap drums, and Dylan Day playing electric guitar.

I mean this with all sincerity, this one will quiet your mind and open up that big old heart of yours.

The Case for Trios: Been finding myself gravitating towards jazz trios recently. John, Dave and Jack help scratch that itch for sure here. Gateway, their 1975 album, released by ECM opens with the highlight tune, Back-Woods Song, written by Dave Holland. Naturally, the bass, quite literally, slaps and the trio fills the space beautiful on this track and throughout the album. There’s magic all over this one.

Dedicated to the Dolphins: Fred Neil left the music business in the early 70s to dedicate his life to the well being of dolphins. Gotta love that. Before doing so, he blessed us with a few albums and a musical sensibility that had an impact on all the major folkies of the time (David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Dylan etc)

Apparently Crosby, Stills and Nash wanted to call their group The Sons of Neil. Respect.

“A Little Bit of Rain” might be my favorite track of Fred’s but the album featured here has been on heavy rotation as we ease into the autumn months.

There’s something about being outside in nature listening to Brazilian music that just seems like everything is in its right place. ‘Acabou Chorare’ by is one of my favorite albums lately and I was lucky enough to grab an original from a few months back. Do yourself a favor and give it a spin there’s everything from Tropicália to psych rock.

“ ‘Acabou Chorare’ is the second album from ‘Novos Baianos’, or ‘New Bahians’, who formed in Bahia, Brazil in the 1960’s. They are considered to be one of the most important and revolutionary groups in Brazilian music.

“The unique sound of this record is a result of the fusion of samba, MPB, rock ‘n’ roll and bossa nova, and strong influences from Gilberto Gil, who frequently played with the group, and bossa nova legend Joao Gilberto.” -Mr. Bongo

~~Wax & Pages~~Gonna be hanging around the Atlantic Ocean a bunch this summer so will be in an ocean state of mind. Dennis Wilson, the only true surfer of The Beach Boys, and deeply troubled man, released Pacific Ocean Blue in 1977. A “raw, bluesy masterpiece of ocean-worshipping psychedelia.”

Paired here with William Finnegan’s “Barbarian Days.” A self portrait of a surfing life. Gnarly.

Linton Kwesi Johnson relocated from Jamaica to England at the age of 11. He began to chronicle Black culture in and around the city of Bristol. His partnership with Dennis Bovell resulted in “landmark” works that blended spoken work and instrumental dub (Forces of Victory and Bass Culture etc.) Featured here is the 1980 album where Bovell reworked tracks from Johnson’s previous two albums in deep dub fashion.

Paired with LKJ’s “Time Come” which includes selected prose and memoir style writings from the man himself.
