NEW EPISODE! New of the MASS ESCAPE from OSO BLANCO PRISON (1950)
The full story is pretty epic...
This escape of over 100 prisoners from the infamous Oso Blanco maximum security prison, masterminded by the feared outlaw Antonio Correa Cotto, spread chaos throughout the island.
All the prisoners were rounded up within a few days; all except for Correa Cotto, who manages to evade capture for 17 months despite the largest manhunt in the history of the Island at the time.
With a vow to seek vengeance on his accusers, Correa Cotto went on an unprecedented killing spree that left 10 people dead and wreaked panic on the anxious populace.
Alerted of his whereabouts, the authorities encircled his hideout and gave him the chance to surrender, but the elusive Cotto fired his gun at them and fled into the vast sugarcane fields at the outskirts of Ponce.
When Captain Luis M. Pérez sets fire to the sugarcane fields, the defiant Correa Cotto charged out with gun blazing and swinging a machete, and was killed during the shootout with the police.
The narrator’s tone and dramatic music gives us a good reference of what was typical to the era, and the last scene of the clip I think captured quite well the demeanor of the characters portrayed in the gangster movies of the 40’s and 50’s.

Raccoonteurs Stephanie and Michelle Viguié recently located the Pathé camera that belonged to their great-grandfather Juan E. Viguié Sr. This was the Puerto Rican film pioneer's first camera, one he had bought when he was a teenager with money he had saved. He asked a friend who was traveling to France to buy it for him, and when his friend went to get it and realized the money wasn’t enough, he put in the rest from his own pocket and brought it to Puerto Rico for Juan.
With this camera, Viguié Sr. filmed his first-ever documentary “Escenas de Ponce” (circa 1912), which consisted of various street and landscape scenes of his hometown. He then screened it in various theaters throughout the island, and in his own movie house in Adjuntas.
As you can tell, this is one historic antique with great sentimental value for us. In the last picture on the right, you can see Viguié Sr. in his elder years proudly holding his treasured first camera.

Treat yourself to an hour-long relaxing video of captivating aerial scenes from the early 1990’s taken from a helicopter way before the drone era. They are raw, unretouched outtakes from a Puerto Rico Tourism Company advertising campaign for the USA market, directed by John E. Viguié with the cinematography by Cesar Marrero Sr. What we recuperated from our archives were copies of tapes that had been duplicated several times, but even though this clearly had a toll in its quality, the impressive imagery and historical references still invites us to reminisce moments of nostalgia from a bygone era that should be preserved for posterity.
