Russia and China held a ground-breaking ceremony of their biggest Nuclear Power Project on May 19, 2021. Under the project, Moscow will jointly build four high-power nuclear power plants in two Chinese cities.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian informed that the President of China Xi Jinping had joined his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin virtually in Beijing to witness the ground-breaking ceremony of the bilateral nuclear energy cooperation project.

With the nuclear power project, China and Russian have successfully firmed up their close ties as they have been facing mounting adversity from the United States and the European Union on various issues.

What is the significance of Nuclear Energy Cooperation?

The successful beginning of the construction of the four nuclear power plant units shows the major cooperation outcomes in science and technology innovation and high-end equipment manufacturing.
The cooperation will also help in boosting the upgrading of practical cooperation between Russia and China.

Since nuclear energy is efficient and clean, the four units of Nuclear power plant in China, after the completion, will also effectively reduce the carbon dioxide emissions.

Nuclear Power Plants in China:
The Tianwen Nuclear Power Plant, of which the 7 and 8 units will be built, is located in the city of Lianyungang in Jiangsu Province, China.

The Xudapu Nuclear Power Plant, of which 3 and 4 units will be jointly built by China and Russia, is located in Xingcheng in Liaoning Province.

A ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas has come into effect.

The ceasefire began early on Friday, bringing to an end 11 days of bombardment in which more than 240 people have died, most of them in Gaza.

Palestinians poured on to the streets of Gaza soon after the truce began, while a Hamas official warned that its hands "are on the trigger".

Both Israel and Hamas have claimed victory in the conflict.

US President Joe Biden said the ceasefire brought "genuine opportunity" for progress.

On Thursday, more than 100 Israeli air strikes targeted Hamas infrastructure in the north of Gaza. Militants launched more than 300 rockets towards Israel during the day, the Israeli military said.

Fighting began in Gaza on 10 May after weeks of rising Israeli-Palestinian tension in occupied East Jerusalem that culminated in clashes at a holy site revered by both Muslims and Jews. Hamas began firing rockets after warning Israel to withdraw from the site, triggering retaliatory air strikes.

At least 232 people, including more than 100 women and children, have been killed in Gaza, according to its health ministry. Israel has said at least 150 militants are among those killed in Gaza. Hamas does not give casualty figures for fighters.

In Israel 12 people, including two children, have been killed, its medical service says. Israel says some 4,000 rockets have been fired towards its territory by militants in Gaza.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has said a live-in-relationship is morally and socially unacceptable while dismissing a petition filed by a runaway couple seeking protection.

Petitioners Gulza Kumari, 19 and Gurwinder Singh, 22 in the petition had stated that they were residing together and intended to get married shortly.

They claimed danger to their lives from Ms Kumari's parents.

"As a matter of fact, the petitioners in the garb of filing the present petition are seeking seal of approval on their live-in-relationship, which is morally and socially not acceptable and no protection order in the petition can be passed. The petition stands dismissed accordingly," Justice HS Madaan said in his May 11 order.

According to petitioner's counsel JS Thakur, Mr Singh and Ms Kumari were living together in Tarn Taran district.

He said Ms Kumari's parents, who are in Ludhiana, did not approve of their relationship.

The couple could not get married as Ms Kumari's documents, which have details of her age, were in possession of her family, Mr Thakur added.

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio Infocomm on Monday said that it will be constructing the largest international submarine cable system centred on India.

The country will be at centre of the two new subsea cable systems to support the growing data consumption needs in India

The systems will seamlessly interconnect as well as connect to the world's top inter-exchange points and content hubs for extension of service globally. "IAX and IEX will enhance the ability for consumer and enterprise users to access content and cloud services in and out of India," said Jio.

"For the first time in the history of fiber optic submarine telecommunications, these systems place India at the centre of the international network map, recognising India's increased importance, staggering growth and the quantum shift in data use since the launch of Jio services in 2016."

These high capacity and high-speed systems will provide more than 200 Tbps of capacity spanning over 16,000 kilometres.

A resident of Pulwama has been arrested in Delhi for allegedly planning to kill controversial priest Swami Yati Narsinghanand on behalf of Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed. The accused, identified as Jan Mohammed Dar, was arrested from a hotel in Paharganj on Sunday.

According to Delhi Police, the items recovered from his possession indicate that Jan Mohammed Dar was planning to dress up like a Hindu priest to assassinate Dasna Devi temple priest Swami Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati, who had recently made controversial comments against Prophet Mohammed.

The Delhi Police recovered a saffron kurta, a white pyjama, a kalava (holy thread), a string of beads, sandalwood paste and a box of Kumkum (vermillion) along with a .30 bore pistol and two magazines containing 15 live rounds.

During the preliminary interrogation, Jan Mohammed Dar revealed that he was tasked with killing the priest by the terror outfit, the police said.

Israel killed a senior Palestinian militant commander in Gaza on Monday in air strikes which it said also targeted underground tunnels used by Hamas, and Islamist groups renewed rocket attacks on Israeli cities.

The violence entered a second week with no sign of an end to the fiercest hostilities in the region in years, despite growing international concern and mounting calls for a ceasefire.

The death of Hussam Abu Harbeed, Islamic Jihad's armed commander for north Gaza, was likely to draw a fierce response from the militant group that is fighting alongside Hamas, the Islamist movement that governs the coastal enclave.

The Israeli military said in a statement that Harbeed had been "behind several anti-tank missile terror attacks against Israeli civilians," and an Israel general said separately that his country could carry on the fight "forever".
