Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's key rival, Benny Gantz, announced Sunday that he is quitting the war Cabinet after a postwar plan for the Palestinian enclave failed to materialize.

Gantz' resignation comes amid global condemnation of the Palestinian civilian death toll in the war on Gaza that has piled domestic and international pressure on Netanyahu.

Gantz announced his resignation in a televised event on Sunday, stating that Netanyahu stood in Israel's way to "a real victory."

"That is why we are leaving the emergency government today with a heavy heart, but with a whole heart,” Gantz said.

A silent colossus lurks off the Pacific coast, threatening hundreds of miles of coastline with tsunamis and devastating earthquakes.

For decades, scientists have warned about the potential of the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a megathrust fault that runs offshore along the coast from northern Vancouver Island to Cape Mendocino, California. When the fault — or even a portion of it — next snaps, it will reshape life in Oregon, Washington and Northern California.

Of particular concern are signals of massive earthquakes in the region’s geologic history. Many researchers have chased clues of the last “big one”: an 8.7-magnitude earthquake in 1700. They’ve pieced together the event’s history using centuries-old records of tsunamis, Native American oral histories, physical evidence in ghost forests drowned by saltwater and limited maps of the fault.

WILMINGTON, Del. — Hunter Biden’s eldest daughter, Naomi, took the stand in her father’s defense on Friday, telling the court how her father appeared to have taken control of his drug use in the months before prosecutors say he lied on a government background check form.

“He seemed like the clearest that I had seen him since my uncle died, and he just seemed really great,” she said of visiting him during a stint in rehab in Los Angeles with her then-boyfriend Peter Neal.

Special counsel Jack Smith appears to have suspected additional efforts by former President Donald Trump to obstruct the government's investigation of his handling of classified documents, a newly unsealed court filing revealed Tuesday.

The opinion was released as an exhibit in filings responding to Trump's efforts to have the case dismissed, ahead of two hearings Wednesday related to Trump aide Walt Nauta's efforts to dismiss the related charges against him.

Trump pleaded not guilty last June to 37 criminal counts related to his handling of classified materials after leaving the White House, after prosecutors said he repeatedly refused to return hundreds of documents containing classified information ranging from U.S. nuclear secrets to the nation's defense capabilities, and took steps to thwart the government's efforts to get the documents back. Nauta also pleaded not guilty to related charges.

Stakeholders in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector who converged at the 3rd Executive Breakfast Conversation held in Accra have charged government to, as a matter of urgency, establish a National Sanitation Authority (NSA) to help coordinate sanitation activities as well as implement policies and programs put together by the Sanitation and Water Resources Ministry.

According to them, even though the sanitation ministry has been created to formulate policies and programs geared towards addressing the country’s sanitation challenges, it is just hanging in the air without legs to function properly.

The mother of a man killed during a Black Lives Matter protest said Friday she was robbed of "long overdue peace" when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pardoned the Army sergeant convicted of murdering her son.

Sheila Foster said she had been upset ever since Abbott declared he would pardon Daniel Perry, who was convicted of murder last year in the death of 28-year-old Air Force veteran Garrett Foster.

Rep. Ro Khanna is paying a cadre of political consultants in the early presidential nominating states, which some say is a possible sign he's exploring a presidential run as early as 2024.

Khanna, a three-term California Democrat, has on his campaign payroll political consultants and strategists throughout the Northeast as well as in Iowa, Nevada and Colorado. The relationships were first disclosed on Friday in filings Khanna's re-election campaign made with the Federal Election Commission.

"He's clearly exploring the possibility of running for president at some point," said Brad Bannon, a Democratic political strategist who has worked on multiple high-profile campaigns. "It might not be in 2024, but he's young and has time to prepare and meet people. Plus, we live in a very volatile political climate. You never know what can happen."

Khanna, who recently published a book on "dignity" in the age of Big Tech, has become a staple of Democratic fundraising dinners in the early nominating states. This year alone, the California congressman has traveled extensively to New Hampshire and Nevada to address local Democratic groups.

NEW YORK – Americans gave Fox News split answers on whether they support New York City’s plan to provide migrants with hotel rooms.

"I think if they're available … why let them go vacant when someone needs a room?" Jerry, from Florida, told Fox News outside the Row NYC, an upscale hotel the city plans to use. "Right now there's a desperate situation for certain people that has to be taken into consideration and maybe given priority until they can be placed in some other facility."

But Frank, a longtime New Yorker, said the idea was "absolutely ludicrous."

"I think that I understand New York trying to provide for all these different people, but … teach them how to work or something," he said. "Don't let somebody get a free ride on the taxpayer."

The United States government has adjusted its COVID-19 entry strategy and has stopped limiting international arrivals from certain countries to 15 airports and is funneling them through enhanced screening and advising them about COVID-19 risks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Until recently, the COVID-19 entry strategy included enhanced entry health screening reserved for those arriving from, or who have recently visited China (excluding the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau), Iran, the Schengen region of Europe, the United Kingdom (excluding overseas territories outside of Europe), Ireland, and Brazil.

In an effort to innovate and adopt a new approach to keep international air passengers healthy, the U.S. government will adopt a new, more effective strategy that focuses on the individual traveler and will facilitate their ongoing journey to include pre-departure and post-arrival education, efforts to develop a potential testing framework with international partners, and illness response. The U.S. government feels that by refocusing its mitigation efforts on individual passenger risk throughout their air travel journey, they can most effectively protect the health of the American people.

Further, the CDC said that screening for symptoms doesn’t really help much because so many people do not have symptoms. “Transmission of the virus may occur from passengers who have no symptoms or who have not yet developed symptoms of infection. Therefore, CDC is shifting its strategy and prioritizing other public health measures to reduce the risk of travel-related disease transmission,” the agency further added.

The U.S. government will now focus its resources on more stringent mitigation efforts that concentrate on the individual passenger. The aforementioned measures include “pre-departure, in-flight, and post-arrival health education for passengers; robust illness response at airports; voluntary collection of contact information from passengers using electronic means,” the CDC said, adding that these measures should help reduce crowding and long lines at airports.

Testing remains an option, in addition to reminding travelers to watch for COVID-19 symptoms and to prepare to quarantine themselves for 14 days.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The reports of hateful and violent posts on Facebook started pouring in on the night of May 28 last year, soon after then-President Donald Trump sent a warning on social media that looters in Minneapolis would be shot.

It had been three days since Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on the neck of George Floyd for more than eight minutes until the 46-year-old Black man lost consciousness, showing no signs of life. A video taken by a bystander had been viewed millions of times online. Protests had taken over Minnesota’s largest city and would soon spread throughout cities across America.

Intolerance: be like the ocean…” Many may not know that those words — a call for the acceptance of diversity — by the 13th century poet and Muslim scholar, Rumi, may actually be those of one of Afghanistan’s legendary figures. Rumi has been claimed by Turkey, Iran and even parts of the Arab world, but he is believed to have been born in 1207 in Balkh, located in the north of what is present-day Afghanistan. It will be interesting to see what the Taliban make of Rumi and other totemic representatives of the cultures that once blossomed in the land now called Afghanistan. And if their consideration is less than positive, what can be done to protect the country’s historical patrimony.

For now, the signs don’t augur well. Soon after swooping down on Kabul, the Taliban announced they were a changed group that now wanted peace. They declared an “amnesty” for all who previously worked against them, and said they were willing to work, even, with “our sisters.” Shortly after that, they blew up a statue.

Did they destroy it because they believed statues promote idolatry, because it depicted a man who was their enemy, because that man was a Shia, or all of the above? It is impossible to say for certain. But it is possible that the statue of Abdul Ali Mazari, a champion of Afghanistan’s ethnic Hazara minority who was executed by the Taliban in 1995, ticked more than one box.

How to protect Afghanistan's culture from being destroyed by the Taliban? A hint of that may be in how the Taliban treated the drug trade.

Unless you’re an armed member of the Taliban in Afghanistan, your life is likely in danger right now. In particular, Joe Biden’s disastrous retreat put more than 10,000 American citizens at risk, as well as tens of thousands of Afghans who assisted the U.S. over the years. But there’s another group of endangered people that’s often overlooked in Muslim-majority countries: Christians.

In a nation of approximately 38 million, estimates put the number of Christians as at most 12,000. Afghan law forbids conversion to Christianity. In fact, it’s dangerous for anyone even with generational roots to identify as Christian, but that’s especially true for converts from Islam. Enforcement is even more brutal under sharia law, which will be reinstated under the Taliban. Given that reality, there could be many more Christians in Afghanistan than anyone knows. Reports are that “the Taliban are going door to door” and asking for Christians, and it’s not to welcome them to the new Afghanistan.

“There’s a real concern amongst Afghan Christians that targeted killings will start happening because of their status as Christians,” says Will Stark, South Asia regional manager for International Christian Concern. The slaughter of Christians at the hands of Muslim extremists is still playing out in Nigeria. We know the danger is real and imminent.

Some Afghan Christians have appealed to the pope for help fleeing. American media personality Glenn Beck has raised millions of dollars to help. Other organization likewise will do what’s possible, but the situation isn’t conducive to orderly help.

As one Christian who fled Afghanistan after the murder of his parents in the 1990s put it, “I don’t understand why the West left Afghanistan this way after 20 years of sacrifices, of democracy.” In some ways neither do we, but we’re also well acquainted with the unfortunate answer.

President Biden in an interview with ABC that aired Thursday said "no one's being killed" in Afghanistan despite reports of at least seven deaths amid the chaos at Kabul's airport and of Taliban beating people on their way to the airport, as he defended his handling of the American withdrawal from the country.

Biden further told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that intelligence did not indicate the Afghan government would quickly collapse – despite reports that's exactly what the intelligence said.

And the president said his advisers did not tell him to delay the troop withdrawal, despite reports that's exactly what his advisers did.

"Oh, there is," Biden said when asked about "pandemonium" near the airport by Stephanopoulos. "But, look – but no one's being killed right now, God forgive me if I'm wrong about that, but no one's being killed right now."

Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said U.S. air support was still an option to fight Taliban and Al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan but that Afghan forces would be the determining factor as the Taliban sweeps across the country and the U.S. draws down its military presence.

“It’s indigenous forces that can make the difference on the ground,” he said in a Friday afternoon news briefing.

But later in the news conference, he added: “We have noted with great concern the speed with which they have been moving and the lack of resistance that they have faced.”
