*DRUM ROLL PLEASE* Joining us at this year’s National Conference is the incredible… DAMIEN MANDER!
If you're not familiar with Damians incredible work (you may know him from the Game Changers documentary), check out his TED Talk here.
Here's a little about Damien:
Damien is an Iraq war veteran who served as a Naval clearance diver and special operations sniper for the Australian Defense Force. In 2009 while travelling through Africa, he was inspired by the work of rangers and the plight of wildlife. Liquidating his life savings, the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF) was established to be the last line of defence for nature. Over the past decade the IAPF has scaled to train and support rangers which now help protect over 4 million hectares of African wilderness.
In 2017 IAPF founded ‘Akashinga – Nature Protected by Women’, a program that has already grown to over 170 employees, becoming the only group of nature reserves in the world to be protected by women.
The goal is to employ 1000 women by 2025, protecting a network of 20 nature reserves, all managed by the IAPF. Damien is the winner of the 2019 Winsome Constance Kindness Gold Medal, a prestigious international recognition for services to animals and humanity. Past recipients include Sir David Attenborough and Dr Jane Goodall. He was featured in the newly released James Cameron documentary The Game Changers, and is now releasing another documentary with James Cameron and National Geographic about his work with the women of Akashinga.

Mark Pearson is the first Australian Member of Parliament to be elected on an animal justice platform, and was elected to the NSW Legislative Council in March 2015.

Within a year of being elected to parliament, Mark introduced a bill seeking to protect farm animals from cruelty and called for mandatory surveillance cameras in all intensive livestock facilities and abattoirs.
In 2018, Mark introduced his next bill, calling to ban the use of exotic animals in circuses in NSW – paving the way for work now being continued by MP Emma Hurst.

In 2019, Mark introduced a bill to ban the practice of mulesing and mandate pain relief for other invasive procedures, and recently successfully sent this bill to a parliamentary inquiry.

Mark’s current positions in Parliament include Chair of the Select Committee on Animal Cruelty Laws in NSW and Deputy Chair of an inquiry into koala populations and habitat.

While Mark’s portfolio tends to focus on wild animals and the environment, such as his long-running battle to ban Australia’s kangaroo trade, Mark also continues to campaign against other forms of animal exploitation, including horse racing and greyhound racing.

Following the outbreak of Covid-19, this year Mark also turned his attention to the harm of the wildlife trade to not only animals, but human health.

Our Story About 2020 AJP NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The Animal Justice Party (AJP) is a political party that was formed in response to the growing number of voters who feel strongly that much more needs to be done through the Australian parliamentary system to assist the wellbeing of animals.

With thousands of members across Australia and an elected MP in the NSW parliament, the AJP is part of a rapidly growing international movement. Our vision is a planet on which animals are treated with respect, dignity, compassion and kindness, where they are able to flourish in their respective environments, and where their unique needs and capabilities are recognised and their interests protected. To achieve this we believe there is a need for animal representation at all levels of politics and we have already shaped the creation of more animal friendly policies at both a state and federal level.
