As we end this year, I give you my top 15 movies of the last decade. Some films that truly have stuck with me. I may have missed a couple, but I’m very happy with this list.

October movie #31 of 31. Bride of Chucky (1998). This one was fittingly chosen because today I am getting married. Cheesy and fun. This one is a favorite of mine.

October movie #30 of 31. Apostle (2018). This one is a slow burner. A great period piece with amazing cinematography. This one starts slow but the second half really takes off in a totally different direction. Amazing acting and story in this one as well. It’s nice to still see some creative gems upon us.

October movie #28 of 31. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986). Cheesy and over the top. But I enjoyed every minute of it. This one is considered a cult classic and I can see why. The abandoned carnival tunnel might be one of my favorite scenes in a horror movie. It has some great production design. And it’s always fun watching Bill Moseley in campy roles.

October movie #27 of 31. Halloween (2018). I’ve already given my review of how good this one is. The sequel that we needed 30 years ago. Makes all the other sequels irrelevant and takes the weird sister aspect out of it. I still recommend this one to any fan of horror.

October movie #26 of 31. The Lighthouse (2019). This one still has my mind in a spin. It’s definitely out there. But there’s so much about this movie that I love. It’s very nostalgic in the way it was film. Very old techniques used to convey an older film. The soundtrack also helps in this aspect. The cinematography and the lighting is spectacular. The acting from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe was some of the best of the year. I’d recommend it off of that alone. Anyone who judges Robert Pattinson because of his Twilight days need to venture out and check out his variety of work. He’s a great actor and he’s gonna make a great Batman.

October movie #25 of 31. Slither (2006). A decent horror/comedy with an original story and some great effects/make-up. Not the best. Not the worst. Worth a watch if you’re curious.

October movie #24 of 31. They Live (1988). This one I’ve been meaning to watch for awhile. I’m disappointed I didn’t see it sooner. It was very creative and very well done. I love John Carpenter and I wish he’d come back and direct more movies. He’s one of the greats.

October movie #23 of 31. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). One of the original horror classics. I’ve seen this one but it has forever. Still holds up after all these years. And debatably the only good one in the series of movies that were made. Can’t beat the original.

October movie #22 of 31. My Bloody Valentine (1981). This isn’t the so-bad-it’s-good 2009 remake with the Supernatural guy. But it’s really not much better. It’s definitely better but it has its issues. It doesn’t really make a ton of sense. But that’s not really what you expect from horror movies most of the time. But it’s good ole fashioned classic horror. With Canadians!!! Lol

October movies #20 and #21 of 30. Scream 2 (1997) and Scream 3 (2000). Well I tried watching movies I hadn’t seen before but I gave in and finished the Scream trilogy. I didn’t watch the 4th one but I do feel like it’s a great movie also. The 3rd one is a little goofy but I really love this film series. These movies really make me miss Wes Craven and I hate that I never got to meet him. RIP.

October movie #19 of 31. Zombieland: Double Tap (2019). I usually don’t like sequels that are unnecessary. But I really enjoyed this one. They made it it’s own and we enjoyed this group of characters all over again. It’s just as good as the first one, in my opinion. And there’s a really awesome cameo at the end so don’t miss it.

October movie #18 of 31. The Fanatic (2019). Who would’ve thought Fred Durst could get John Travolta and Devon Sawa in a bad movie. This one isn’t good. But it’s also not the worst movie ever. I watched solely to see John Travolta play a weird and cooky character. He’s about the only decent part of this movie. It’s an interesting one time watch but don’t go in with too many expectations.

October movie #17 of 31. Little Monsters (2019). I came across this one by chance and it may be my favorite movie I’ve watched so far. I’m typically very negative toward the zombie genre, but I really enjoyed this one. It was genuinely funny and fun while also holding onto its horror elements. I really recommend this to anyone.

October movie #16 of 31. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). This one is really good. The story, the acting and the special effects/make up are really well done. This is a remake. It is said to be one of the best remakes. I can’t really comment because I haven’t seen the original. But this one seems to stand on its own.

October movie #15 of 31. Jacob’s Ladder (1990). There are elements of this one I like and elements that I didn’t like. It has great acting, great imagery and some genuine suspense that builds through the whole movie. But, I found myself lost in the story during a couple instances. I feel like it tried to be too clever for its own good. In the end it was an entertaining film and I’d still recommend it to everyone. It inspired a lot of things after it including the Silent Hill series, The Sixth Sense, etc.

October movie #14 of 31. Carrie (1976). I had put this one off for far too long. This is one of those movies that I’d seen pieces of but never really sat down and watched it. It’s definitely one of the best horror movies of all time. The acting is top notch for a horror film. I’m glad I’m actually watching a lot of movies I’d never really seen before this year. It’s been one of the better years. We aren’t even halfway yet. More to come...

October movie #13 of 31. 3 From Hell (2019). I always have a love/hate relationship with Rob Zombie movies. While this one was an unnecessary sequel, and also not quite on par with The Devil’s Rejects, I still enjoyed it for the most part. It’s not a great movie. But it’s an entertaining horror movie. It definitely misses Sid Haig’s witty humor (R.I.P.). Richard Brake does a decent job replacing him as the 3rd member of the murderous trio. But it definitely feels it’s missing his presence through most of the movie.

October movie #12 or 31. The Ritual (2017). I’ve had this one on my list the last 2 years. Finally brought myself to watch it. I should have seen it sooner. This one was very well done. It had a very Blair Witch Project feel. But I liked it much better. There was a tension that lingered and built until the very end. Not to mention the dazzling landscape of the locations they shot. I highly recommend this one for anyone looking for something good on Netflix.

October movie #11 of 31. Gerald’s Game (2017). This was not what I expected. I saw the good reviews so I gave it a chance. And it did not disappoint. It had a great story and some amazing imagery. The cinematographer did a terrific job. Give this one a chance if you’re looking for something on Netflix.

October movie #10 of 31. Night of the Living Dead (1968). It’s crazy how far we’ve come along with editing because the cuts in this one are very obvious. That said, it’s nice to see where the Zombie genre came from. Very entertaining. Even for a 50 year old movie.

October movie #9 of 31. Candyman (1992). This is one that for some reason, I’ve put off for a long time. But I gotta say that I’m mad at myself for not watching it sooner. It’s such a great movie. Definitely a classic. Can’t wait to meet Clive Barker and Tony Todd next year at Texas Frightmare.

I decided to give my opinion on who the best Joker is after watching Joaquin Phoenix.

Best Joker:

1) Heath Ledger
2) Joaquin Phoenix
3) Mark Hamill
4) Jack Nicholson
5) Cesar Romero
6) Cameron Monaghan
7) Zach Galifianakis (LEGO Batman)
8.) anyone who hasn’t played Joker yet

9) I guess Jared Leto. Although I don’t consider him the real Joker in the DC universe. I think he’s a department store rip off.

October movie #8 of 31. You Were Never Really Here (2017). This one is difficult to process. It’s very dark and artsy. I typically like those kinds of movies. It felt like it started slow and ended abruptly. Just need time to think on it I suppose. On the plus side, Joaquin kills the role as usual.

October movie #7 of 31. Joker (2019). I was looking forward to this one ever since I first heard it was being made. And it did not disappoint. Even with the immature girls who talked through the whole movie. It was dark, vivid and a damn near perfect movie to me. It was so well done and some incredible acting by one of the greatest actors of our time. Go see it. You won’t be disappointed.

October movie #6 of 31. The Midnight Meat Train (2008). This one was very interesting. I love Clive Barker’s stories and this is one of the better adaptions. Not to mention a great cast with a young Bradley Cooper. It was entertaining and I would recommend it.

October movie #5 of 31. The Dead Don’t Die (2019). Ok, so I heard a bunch of mixed things about this movie. I can see where people might not like it. But I loved it. I think some people just don’t get the humor. Adam Driver makes this movie so fun.

October movie #2 of 31. The Monster Squad (1987) is one of the many on my list that I haven’t actually seen. This year, I put a lot of effort into choosing movies I haven’t seen. There will be a few classics scattered in. But I really wanted to challenge myself.

Today I’d like to discuss another in a long line of horror remakes: Child’s Play (2019).

It serves as a remake and reboot of the 1988 film of the same title, following a family that is terrorized by a high-tech doll that rejects its programming and becomes self-aware.

Something different you immediately notice is that it isn’t the same doll we remember from the 80s. This movie seems to poke fun at our reliance on technology in this era. It’s a refreshing take on a franchise that has seen 7 movies span over the last 20 years. Some good. Some not so good.

So I’ll start with a couple negatives I had. This movie is far from perfect. If you’re expecting that, then you’re probably not a horror fan.

First thing, the transitions. Some may not know what I’m talking about, but when they transition from scene to scene, especially in the beginning, it just feels lazy. This probably has to do with the 6 month window they were given to write and shoot the film. Second, the doll does look goofy in some parts. It’s not a big deal but it can be distracting. Lastly, the cgi is kind of goofy in a couple parts. Mainly when the doll is jumping.

There were a lot more positives than negatives that I took from the movie. The cinematography was great. They did some awesome lighting in a bunch of scenes. It makes for good cinema. Mark Hamill knocks it out as the voice of Chucky. He voices every doll but he does great with the childish and sinister tones of Chucky. Another great aspect is the humor. I’m not sure I’ve ever laughed as much in another horror movie. It’s surprising how well it works together in this movie. Lastly, the marketing done for this film was great. The photo I added with this review is an example of some of the great steps they took at marketing.

While this may not be my favorite Child’s Play movie, it’s definitely up there. It’s a fun movie with beautiful shots and decent acting. Go see it for yourself.

Score: 7/10

Thank you for tuning in today. I just wanted to do a quick review on Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I’ve had a lot of people ask me about it and I’ve heard a lot of different opinions. So I thought I’d share my thoughts. If you’re still not convinced then go see it for yourself.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters tells the story of a group of ecoterrorists who want to rebalance the earth by whatever means necessary. They release monsters (AKA titans as they call them) to destroy so that the earth may grow back to its natural habitat. Thus saving the earth in a way.

Ok, first off, if you go into a movie like this for the story then you’ll be very disappointed. I’m not sure any of the Godzilla movies have actual compelling stories with their human characters. They all prance around with cringeworthy one liners and a plot that is a hot mess. This really brings the quality of the movie down, in my opinion.

The big bright spots of the movie are the monster fights. It’s exactly what you want from these Godzilla movies. The cinematography and sound design is great as well. It’s beautiful and fun to watch. Even if it isn’t the best story.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a fun monster movie, then I highly recommend watching this. If you’re into just the story aspects of movies then this might not be the movie for you.

I look forward to Kong vs Godzilla next year.

Hello all! And welcome to my first installment of “Quick Reviews by Garrett”. Totally spoiler free so don’t worry about anything ruining the story itself. Today we delve into the newest of the horror remake machine, “Pet Semetary”. Let’s get into it....

The film stars Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Lithgow. Based on the Stephen King novel and the 1989 classic horror movie, Pet Semetary tells the story of a family that discovers a mysterious graveyard in the woods behind their new home.

First things first, this movie takes a lot of time setting up. So don’t expect a high octane horror movie. This is also one of the big issues I had with the movie. There was so much setup that when the action picks up, it’s over in a flash. And you feel like you’ve been shorted in the quality of the movie itself.

Another thing that bugged me was the overuse of jump scares. They tried so hard to really sell them, but they were so predictable that I laughed at most of them. Predictability is a big downfall to this movie overall. Stephen King tells terrifying stories, but there isn’t anything new here.

There were some things I did enjoy. The acting was bearable. But there were times when the actors were trying too hard. The cat was the real star of the movie. Every time he was in a scene, he stole the show. Talk about getting overshadowed by a feline. I understand that there were 4 different cats used and they all did terrific. So kudos to the pet handlers on the film.

The cinematography and editing was a plus. It always helps if the movie looks good. But in the end, the story lacks and it feels like a movie I only need to see once.

I give the movie a 4/10

Welcome everyone! I’ve finally decided to stop procrastinating and get this movie review thing going. These are going to be quick reviews so don’t worry. There won’t be an essay to read. Just some quick points and an overall score.

My first review for the movie “Pet Semetary” is coming shortly. Look out for it. And like the page while you’re at it. Let’s make this a thing.
