International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while also bringing attention to issues like gender inequality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Today we celebrate the inspiring women who have paved the way for equality so that women everywhere can be empowered and speak up to make a difference.

With that being said, today is also about recognizing that women and girls still face the largest gender gap in STEM fields. We also want to celebrate women in STEM who are empowering their communities, inspiring a new generation and making a difference around the world for women in STEM.

Thank you to all the women who fight for their passion and work towards keeping our world a more equitable place! Additionally, to the women who inspire us and empower us every day to become better versions of ourselves. HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY TO ALL! 💪🏽👩‍⚕️👩🏽‍🌾👩‍💻👩🏿‍💼👩‍🏭👩🏾‍🔬👩🏼‍🚀🧕🏽🧬🔭🌎

☀️Siria Ysabel Bojorquez is a first generation, highest ranking, cm laude honors bachelor’s degree graduate from Texas Tech University. She also holds a Master’s in Green Energy, Management, and Corporate Social Responsibility from Università Bocconi in Milan, Italy.  Her former employer positions include, working for the US Department of Education under TRIO, working as an environmental and international policy intern for former congressman Beto O’Rourke, and being a PBS Kid’s Club TV Host (where she directed and stared in educational science clips).

☀️She has held several pageant titles all of which originated from her passion for sustainability. United Nations and Peace Corp Representative for 24th World Miss University, Miss Teen Earth United States (2010), Miss Earth United States (2012), Miss Lubbock Texas USA (2014), Miss Multiverse (2016) and Miss Sun City for Miss Texas USA (2021).   
☀️She has had several research publications including one on the United States Agency for International Development’s Food Aid program and the Environmental Services Department in Texas. She is trilingual, has experience in over 25 countries and is a proud environmentalist.

🔸 S2 E3 : Gabrielle Sousa is a Brazilian living in Berlin, Germany. She holds a Bachelors in Civil Engineering, two MBA’s, one in Management and the other is in Business Law, and she holds a  Masters of Science in renewables. Gabi is an avid explorer visiting over 70 countries and is a researcher in energy law, solar energy, and decarbonization. In addition, she is an advocate for climate justice, inclusion and diversity, and the decolonization of the climate discourse. We are discussing her past research of halite perovskite solar cells, activism, being a women in a male dominated field like construction and engineering, and much much more!

🌱 Episode 2 features Tea Qendrai! She holds a Bachelor in Economics and a Masters in Marketing from the University of Tirana in Albania. After she graduated, she moved to Bonn, Germany where she started her international experience and her second Masters in Governance and Regulations at the University of Bonn. After her studies she focused on a career in Environmental, Social and Governance topics, where she worked for UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) and other international organizations. Currently, she works on sustainability topics for the renewable energy sector. She also has a passion for beekeeping and looks forward to being more involved with this in the future and producing high quality honey! 🍃 🐝 🍯

She is also a speaker for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and will also be competing for the title of Miss Ohio USA this spring!

🚀 Join us for our last episode of season 1 today and welcome Mary-Kate Smith! MK holds a Bachelors and a Masters in Aerospace Engineering from Mississippi State University. She specializes in Mission Design and Digital Engineering. She has worked in NASA Mission Control supporting the astronauts on the International Space Station, developed digital engineering structures for drones, and has climbed around Navy submarines supporting Mission operations for Trident Missiles at Lockheed Martin. Currently she works at Emergent Space Technologies as an aerospace engineer continuing her digital engineering work. She is passionate about STEM outreach and has recently started a YouTube series called TheRocketeerLady, where she tells stories of her experience as a woman in industry. A subset of the series is The DeltaV podcast used to amplify women and other minority voices in STEM.

✨Rachel Stottmann is a Civil/Environmental engineering student at the University of
Louisville’s JB Speed School of Engineering. Rachel will graduate in May 2022 with her second Bachelor’s degree. She previously graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in drawing and painting. Rachel is a huge proponent for the outdoors and has started a project called “Tread the Red” that focuses on the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Her love for the outdoors and hiking were key in her decision to continue her education in the world of Civil Environmental engineering and also her sole purpose for creating Tread the Red. The project has been an outlet for her to share her experiences at Red River Gorge and highlight stories of the people who make up the amazing community. Rachel is a huge supporter of “STEAM” – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics – and hopes to connect with the outdoors and others through her Civil/Environmental engineering path combined with her artistic side. 🔶 Tune in this week to hear the stories of Sofya Kovalevskaya & Edith Clarke. These women have taken part in forging a way for women in the STEM field and allowing women today to do what we love. Sofya Kovalevskaya (a really difficult name to pronounce as an English speaker, perhaps you may get a few laughs at me trying so hard 😋) was a Russian mathematician who made significant contributions to analysis, partial differential equations, and mechanics. Edith Clarke was the first woman to be professionally employed as an electrical engineer in the United States. Tune into this two-part series to hear their remarkable stories and how they forged a path for women in the STEM field. Without women like Sofya Kovalevskaya & Edith Clarke fighting for their place and indirectly the place of all women in the STEM field we could have been stuck in a society where women weren’t allowed to contribute. Although we have a long way to go for the fight of equality, it’s important to keep in mind when we all fight together our voices are heard and this is where we see change.

📣 Tune in this week to hear the stories of Chien-Shiung Wu and Grace Hopper. These women have taken part in forging a way for women in the STEM field and allowing women today to do what we love. Chien-Shiung Wu was a Chinese American particle and experimental physicist and she made significant contributions in the fields of nuclear and particle physics. Grace Brewster Murray Hopper was an American computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral who made contributions to programming Mark I, II, and III. She also developed along with her team the first computer language "compiler" and  coined the phrase "debugging" as she was taking apart Mark 2 with her team and found a moth, hence "debugging" the computer. Tune into this two-part series to hear their remarkable stories and how they forged a path for women in the STEM field. Without women like Chien-Shiung Wu and Grace Hopper fighting for their place and indirectly the place of all women in the STEM field we could have been stuck in a society where women weren’t allowed to contribute. 💥Although females have contributed diversely to the field of engineering since the beginning of time, they’re still very under-represented in the academic and professional realms. There are many different aspects as to why the numbers for women in the engineering field are particularly low, although it has been increasing since the 1960’s. Even though studies have indicated females have more key leadership skills like those to build relationships and take initiate, we find them in less leadership roles because men are less likely to take time off work to raise a family and this tends to fall on the woman, or they create an uncomfortable environment for women to grow.  Of course, this is not all men, but to build numbers of women in the engineering world these aspects need to be addressed. There are many more reasons and aspects, but these are just to name a few.

✨Despite there being a lack of females within the engineering field, there are many things that can be done to ensure this number increases. Revisiting curriculums to remove barriers so females can progress, encouraging women to go into engineering and mentoring them, and implementing women engineering programs that will help break down this barrier for females. When these disparities persist for females, everyone suffers, and women miss out on opportunities for themselves. So on this International Women in Engineering Day – we celebrate these astonishing women and to the females of future engineering! 🥂🎉

✨Meet Ndidi Edeh-Larberg, a Maternal and Child Health Epidemiologist for Summit County Public Health Department. She comes with experience in investigating and advising other health officials, government, and communities on birth outcomes. In addition to working at the Summit Country Public Health Department, she is also currently working on her PhD to determine if racism is the root cause for poor birth outcomes for African American women. We discuss heavy topics like infant fatality, embedded racism in women's health, and different programs families can apply for with some facts you probably didn't know. We also discuss her being a new mom and how she "treats" herself. Tune in to find out about all of this and more!

✅According to UNESCO Institute for Statistics – there are a series of new indicators about the dynamics that shape women’s decisions to pursue STEM Careers. This ranges from their educational pathways to social factors, like starting a family and workplace environment.

✅There have been numerous studies that have found women in the STEM field publish less and are paid less for their research and furthermore do not progress as far as men in their careers. In addition to this, there was a survey that was developed that investigates the drivers and barriers to a career in science and engineering. By comparing the results from both men and women, the results indicate the extent to which family decisions, financial considerations, workplace cultures, and discrimination shapes their respective careers in STEM Fields. – The UNESCO Institute for Statistics

💥Raising awareness of the gender and racial discrimination women face within the workplace and everyday life is a place to start to reverse this gender bias and racism. Listen and reflect, have open difficult conversations with others to ask how you can help. SPEAK UP when you see this happening and teach respect for the differences amongst us. There is a lot you can do but being an advocate is a great start.

💥 Tomorrow, I'm so excited to introduce Ti'Air Riggins, a Biomedical Engineering PhD candidate at Michigan State University. Ti' investigates implantable electrodes to tune immune responses in the brain, (AMAZING!) in the REIL lab under the direction of Dr. Erin Purcell. She is a current NIH F99/K00 fellow and was named a fellow in the Society for Neuroscience from 2016-2018. Additionally, she is in the speaker's bureau for the R**e and In**st National Network. She's an exceptional woman and I'm so happy she is able to share her story with you all and encourage women to pursue a path in engineering.

Today, we are traveling all the way to Ohio, USA! Alexandra Hoopes is an Epidemiologist for a large health insurance provider. She works closely with clinical and business leaders to drive operational analytics for population identification, program need, and emerging risk. Alexandra holds a MPH (Master in Public Health) degree, with a specialization in Epidemiology. Epidemiology is the method used to find causes of health outcomes and diseases in populations.
