Romero, El Ma****lo Press publishes writers whose pens strike the page with clear intent; words with purpose to pry apart assumed norms and to hammer away at injustice. El Ma****lo Press proactively publishes writers looking to pound the pavement to promote their work and the work of their fellow pressmates. El Ma****lo is the builder of bridges and the destroyer of walls. Launched in Los Angeles

with a diverse group of celebrated and hardworking writers who embody our working-class intellectual spirit, El Ma****lo Press maintains an editorial board that makes its selections for publishing.


Submissions

We solicit our authors and do not take unsolicited submissions. However, if you send us an email attempting an unsolicited submission, we strongly recommend that you include: a professional bio, a synopsis of your work, your work (or a sample) formatted in single space Times New Roman size 12 font, and any relevant links (website, socials, press articles, publications, YouTube videos of readings or performances, etc.).

​If you are sending in an unsolicited submission, do not add the co-founders on social media and message them via social media or comment upon posts regarding the status of your submission. Do not refer to our co-founders in such a way as to suggest a degree of familiarity, if in fact, you have not met them in person. This will result in automatic rejection. Do not buy books directly from the co-founders or send money to them for any reason. This will be interpreted as an attempt to buy your way into getting published. This will also result in automatic rejection.

​We will not answer all inquiries. Inquiries that gain our interest may be answered, but we do not commit to publishing any work until we have sent an author a contract. We do not owe any author explanation for why we have decided to pass on their project or why we haven't answered their inquiry.

🎞️📢You are cordially invited to the premiere of the Chicano Poets Series in Pittsburg, California, on Saturday, January 11, at 5 PM. This special event will take place at Maya Cinemas, the only Latino owned theater chain founded by legendary producer and activist Moctesuma Esparza, whose mission is to bring culturally rich experiences to underserved communities.

This evening celebrates the vibrant voices and stories of Chicano poetry, featuring: Live music/special performances and an exclusive Q&A session with three iconic literary figures:

𝙹𝚞𝚊𝚗 𝙵𝚎𝚕𝚒𝚙𝚎 𝙷𝚎𝚛𝚛𝚎𝚛𝚊: U.S. Poet Laureate, National Book Critics Circle Award winner, and a pioneer in Chicano poetry. His works have shaped the landscape of contemporary literature. He recently received the National Medal of Humanities from Joe Biden and the MacArthur Genius Award.

𝚁𝚒𝚐𝚘𝚋𝚎𝚛𝚝𝚘 𝙶𝚘𝚗𝚣𝚊́𝚕𝚎𝚣: An award-winning poet and author whose accolades include the PEN/ Voelcker Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His powerful works, like “Butterfly Boy”, explore themes of masculinity, LGBTQ resilience, and migration.

𝙿𝚊𝚞𝚕 𝚂. 𝙵𝚕𝚘𝚛𝚎𝚜: Renowned playwright, poet, and performance artist known for blending cultural storytelling with activism. His acclaimed book “We Still Be”: recently earned the American Book Award and he has won various grants such as NALAC, The Rainin Foundation and the Creative Work Fund.

We're excited to announce we'll be publishing Curandereando by in 2025!

Dr. Lani Cupchoy is a public historian, storyteller, poet, artivista, and filmmaker of Chicana, Afro-indígena, Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian), and Chinese heritage. Currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chicana(o) Latina(o) Studies at California State University, Los Angeles, she specializes in Public History, Ethnic Studies, Indigenous Knowledge, and Decolonial storytelling as transformative tools for cultural empowerment and social justice. Founder of Pinkjade Creations, she uses film, music, and digital media to amplify intergenerational narratives and cultural resilience. Her forthcoming books, Curandereando: Sacred Decolonial Healing (El Ma****lo Press, 2025) and Abuela Medicine: Indigenous Remedios and Decolonial Healing Across Generations (FlowerSong Press, 2025), promise to inspire readers with their fusion of poetry, storytelling, and ancestral healing practices. Dr. Cupchoy has directed five award-winning documentaries, including Islandtrification and Aloha Soul Food, and created the Digital Testimonios archive to amplify marginalized voices. Sonia Gutiérrez is the author of two full-length bilingual poetry collections, Spider Woman / La Mujer Araña (Olmeca Press, 2013) and Paper Birds: Feather by Feather / Pájaros de papel: Pluma por pluma (El Ma****lo Press, 2024), recipient of an honorable mention for the ILBA’s The Juan Felipe Herrera Best Poetry Book Award—One Author—Bilingual, and the novel, Dreaming with Mariposas (FlowerSong Press, 2020), winner of the Tomás Rivera Book Award 2021, the International Latino Book Awards 2022, and the ILBA Book into Movie Awards 2023. She teaches composition, critical thinking and writing, and creative writing. Participó como guionista en la adaptación cinematográfica del cuento de su autoría «Jueves de junio». Ha publicado cuento en diversas revistas literarias. Casi lo confundo con mi hogar es su primer libro.

Belkis Miller was born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, in 1972 and graduated in Graphic Design from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Tijuana. She has been a student of writer Mario González Suárez since 2010. She has taken courses at the Mexican School of Writers and workshops at Cecut with Élmer Mendoza, Guillermo Samperio, Claudia Guillén, Ignacio Trejo Fuentes, and Mauricio Bares. She has been a translator, interpreter, and bilingual collaborator since 2017 at Casa Cornelia Law Center San Diego. She published an essay in Southwestern College San Diego magazine and participated in the 130 Years, 130 Words (2019) book with the minifiction "Mi Fracc." She is co-author of the book Vagón Rosa Rosa Rosa with the short story "Carmen" with Ediciones Periféricas in 2024.

Donato Martinez was born in a small pueblo, Garcia de la Cadena, Zacatecas, Mexico and immigrated into the USA at six years old. He teaches English Composition, Literature, and Creative Writing at Santa Ana College. He has also taught classes in Chicano Studies. He has been a co-coordinator of the Puente Program for 25 years. He hosts and curates many artistic events that feature poetry and music at his campus or in the community. He is also a poet and writes about his barrio experience, his community, his Chicano culture, bilingual identities, and other complexities of life. He is influenced by the sounds and pulse of the streets, people, music, and the magic of language. He has a self-published collection with three other Inland Empire poets, Tacos de Lengua. His work has been published by City Works, East Side Rose, The Acentos Review, San Diego Poetry Annual, Ofrenda Magazine, The Mixtape Literary Journal, Latin@ Literatures, and La Raiz Magazine. He loves the outdoors and is inspired by books, music, and his children, Gabriel, and Abigail. Martinez published his poetry debut Touch the Sky in 2023 with El Ma****lo Press. He is the host of Palabra Open Mic at The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture.

Felicia ‘Fe’ Montes (M.A./M.F.A.) is a MeXicana Indigenous holistic artivist, femcee, designer, poet, professor, public scholar, and practitioner of the healing arts from East Los Angeles. She is the co-founder and director of Mujeres de Maiz, In Lak Ech, Botanica del Barrio and El MERCADO y Mas and an Assistant Professor in Chicanx/Latinx Arts and Social Practice at Cal State University Long Beach. She has published in the books Fleshing the Spirit, Voices from the Ancestors, and MeXicana Fashions and is the co editor of the book Mujeres de Maiz en Movimiento: Spiritual Artivism, Healing Justice and Feminist Praxis (University of Arizona Press, 2024).
