The Lost Boys

On February 12th, 2023 we departed Jakarta, Indonesia for our motorbike trip across Sumatra. Our goal was to reach the “0 KM” marker at the northern tip of the island, which is recognized as the start of the country. We extensively explored seven of Sumatra’s provinces and visited five smaller exterior islands. Our route including ferries totaled over 5,000 km, but our motorbike odometers read more than double that number. We completed the journey on November 14th, 2023 after spending more than 200 days on the road and taking two breaks. Since the posting of our last video, all of our content has finally been released from the trip.

Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world, and due to the nature of our style of traveling, it was a big undertaking which we definitely underestimated. We’d be lying if we said we enjoyed every moment, and there were many highs and lows that we experienced both on and off camera. Overall, it was a huge challenge trying to balance producing our content + growing our business, all while traveling this wild island by motorbike. But throughout the journey we had countless invaluable experiences, from making new friends to understanding different cultures. We learned more about ourselves while growing as individuals, and we’ll always look back on this as the trip of a lifetime.

We both arrived in Indonesia in March 2020 as travelers. We hadn’t met yet, we had no video/editing experience, and we were stuck due to the pandemic. Fast forward four years…now we have a YouTube channel and went on one of the biggest talk shows in Indonesia. Life is wild.

SIAPA S**A PEMPEK?!

During our time in Palembang we ate so much Pempek. We visited some of the cities most iconic restaurants and rated all of the different varieties (lenjer, kapal salam, kulit, telur, pistel). We are so happy to finally share with you our official logo!

The first one is our primary color scheme and what you’ll see used as our profile photo across all of our social media channels. The second one is an alternate color scheme that you’ll see on our merchandise and other multimedia.

You may be curious as to why we didn’t incorporate an image of us into our logo, or why we won’t be using an image of us as our profile photo…here’s why:

When we (Rob + Cheyne) started this in September 2021, there was no way to predict what the future had in store for us. We were confident in ourselves and optimistic that we would achieve our goals, but the road ahead was still unclear. The only thing that we were sure of was that the process would not be easy, and we’d need to grow and learn in order to build TLB into something special.

We are continually learning to this day, and we’ve slowly figured out that TLB is more than just us two…it’s a mindset, a way to travel, and a brand. It encompasses not only us but anyone who joins us on our journey, including those who are watching from home or those who have been inspired to hit the road themselves.

Many people asked if (Antonio) was part of TLB when he started regularly appearing in our content. At first it was a bit confusing, even for us. But now that we’re establishing our brand, we believe it’s clear that and anyone else who may join us in the future, are in fact part of what we’re building.

We do want to give a huge thanks and shoutout to Antonio for the important role he has played since joining us in 2022. He absolutely brings a new energy and life to our videos, and does his best in assisting us produce our content as well. It’s safe to say that we wouldn’t be where we are today without him.

Ladies and Gentlemen we are finally taking off on our trip to Sumatra! This trip has been a long time coming, and we can’t wait to drive our bikes from Jakarta to Sabang. We’re going to be exploring the entire island from Lampung to Aceh, Belitung to the Mentawais, and more. We expect to be in Sumatra for up to 6 months, and we’re really excited to share our entire journey with you all. 100K SUBSCRIBERS! We posted our 1st video less than 11 months ago, so now to have reached this milestone, this fast is just mind blowing.
First, we want to say thanks/terima kasih to you all. Absolutely none of this would be possible without your love and support. We’ve been so fortunate to build an amazing audience of genuine and kind souls. Although we’ve only met you all through DMs and comments, we can still feel the love and positive energy.
When we started this journey we set a few goals…first, we want to inspire people to travel. Now we understand that not everyone has the means to travel, but there are many people out there who think they can’t but can. We hope our videos have inspired you to take that first leap. Second, we want to educate people. Whether it’s tips, recommendations, or even our travel philosophy, we hope our videos have helped our audience with their travel plans. Next, we want to entertain people, and we hope our videos have been able to make you smile/laugh. And finally, we want to tell stories. Instead of just visiting a place and giving our reaction, we want to tell you about the place, the history, and introduce you to the local people. We really hope that this aspect of our videos has allowed our viewers who aren’t able to travel, to look through a window into a new world and opened their minds a bit.
But guys, the biggest message that we hope to get across with our content is that life is better as your true authentic self. As we all know, the travel space is filled with many creators that are trying to fit in a certain persona and display a perfect life. But in our eyes, that’s not what travel/life is about. It’s not about trying to be an IG model and taking the perfect picture in every place you visit. It’s not about following the crowd and fitting into all the trends. It’s about being yourself, being imperfect, having fun, meeting new people, and broadening your horizons. If you’ve taken anything away from our content, we truly hope it’s this. We visited Desa Tri Eka Buana in the Karangasem Regency of East Bali, and spent time with a local family that produces arak. Arak is a traditional alcohol that is made all throughout Bali, but this village is known for producing some the best stuff on the island! We celebrated Galungan here in Bali a couple weeks ago! We were incredibly lucky to spend the day with Wayan Sudira] and his family. They were so kind and welcomed us into their village/home in Desa Petulu for two days. Wayan Sudira] also happens to be one of the BEST drivers here in Bali. If you’re planning your trip here and need someone to take you around the island, definitely message him 🙏🏼
