Since we started our fundraiser, the situation on the ground in Lebanon has worsened, and we are now making a final push to go beyond our initial goal in order to reach our full team on the ground who are currently living under dire conditions.

Bombings on Beirut and its surroundings are unpredictable and happening in densely populated areas. Opportunities to work or earn money are impossible, so there is no way to cover the cost of day-to-day goods.

Please consider donating to support our musician and filmmaker friends on the ground. Link in bio.
If you cannot donate, please consider any remote opportunities for French or Arabic translation or subtitling, sound, or music work that could support our team through this impossible time.

🎥 "Ethics take time and they're expensive." Lady & Bird co-founder Jennifer Tiexiera prioritizes the wellbeing of participants, even if it takes more time, money and effort. "I believe in making sure that my participants don't suffer at all in participating in this with me." Jen discusses in-depth about the ethics of documentary filmmaking in this thought-provoking Rough Cut Film interview about 'Subject' (Subject documentary) and Jen's approach to ethics, consent, and responsibility in nonfiction storytelling.

Through the experiences of participants in acclaimed documentaries like 'The Staircase' and 'Hoop Dreams,' 'Subject' explores the profound impact of sharing one's life on screen.

The participants' wellbeing is at the heart of our mission at Lady & Bird Films as we navigate this explosive and volatile era of documentaries.

Lady & Bird Films is producing a feature documentary about the amazing young women behind Les Hijabeuses, a female football collective in Paris. Their mission is to fight for the right to play while wearing their hijabs, since the French Football Federation has banned them.

🏳️‍🌈 James "Terry Howe" Bidgood (1933-2022) was a trailblazing gay artist who transformed q***r photography and filmmaking in the 1960s and '70s. Initially a drag performer in New York's East Village, Bidgood later created elaborately staged, fantastical photographs that brought new levels of artistry and camp to gay imagery. He also directed the cult classic film "Pink Narcissus" (1971), released anonymously at the time. Bidgood's work, which often featured attractive men in mythological and dreamy settings, helped pave the way for greater LGBTQ+ representation in visual arts. Though his contributions were initially overlooked, Bidgood's unique vision was rediscovered and celebrated later in life, cementing his legacy as a pioneer of unapologetically q***r art.

At the bottom of the image is a quote attributed to Terry Howe: "Pl***oy had girls in furs, feathers and lights. They had faces like beautiful angels. I didn't understand why boy pictures weren't like that."

🏳️‍🌈 Michael "Daphne" Alogna was a pioneering drag queen in New York City during the 1950s and 60s, a time when cross-dressing in public was both dangerous and illegal. As part of a group known as the Boomatzas, Daphne performed in underground clubs like the 82 Club and the Cork Club. She faced significant challenges, including police brutality and societal discrimination. In one memorable incident, Daphne was arrested and her Italian father had to collect her from the police station, berating her when he realized she was a "Suzie" (slang for a drag queen). Despite these hardships, Daphne and her sisters in drag persevered, helping to pave the way for future generations of LGBTQ+ performers and activists. Her story, preserved through letters to friend Ed Limato, offers a vivid glimpse into the pre-Stonewall era of drag culture in New York City.

"To put it mildly, he's demented for me. Much kisses and claiming he can't sleep or eat ever since we met. And Mary, I love it. I never felt so cunty.' -Daphne"

🏳️‍🌈 Joseph "Tish" Touchette (1924-2021) was a pioneering female impersonator who graced the stages of New York City and the East Coast for over 40 years. Born in Connecticut, Tish's journey into drag began with a playful wedding ceremony in the 1940s. He moved to New York in 1956, becoming a fixture in the city's vibrant underground club scene. Tish performed in Mafia-owned venues, honing his craft as a singer and dancer. He lived in the same Greenwich Village apartment for over 60 years, witnessing the evolution of drag culture and LGBTQ+ rights. Though he never marched in a Pride parade, Tish's long career as a female impersonator helped pave the way for future generations of drag performers. He passed away at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy as one of New York's oldest drag queens and a living link to a bygone era of q***r entertainment.

Image Descriptions:

The text at the bottom of the image reads: ""Joseph 'Tish' Touchette 1924-2021.""
Image 2: A photograph of an elderly man, Joseph ""Tish"" Touchette, sitting on a couch in a room filled with natural light from a nearby window. At the bottom of the image is a quote attributed to Tish: "A drag queen is an amateur—a female impersonator is a professional."
